Oui, it’s painful for me to rank this so low, because France is one of my favorite countries. When I watched Bilal perform in the semifinal… I was already preparing myself. This was the song to defeat - not because he was the best singer, or because the song was great, but because Bilal is Bilal. I’ll leave it at that; no point in getting controversial. The song being co-written by Madame Monsieur is a promising backing. It opens with a melodic piano and a very strong line: “I am me.” It immediately strikes a chord with the audience. It transitions almost flawlessly between French and English lyrics, which (at least from an English-speaking perspective) gives enough meaning to the non-French speaking viewers. It’s even enough that the staging (which is usually an afterthought for France, let’s be real) can be minimal and still very effective. But I think he's going to bring flavor one way or another Other lyrics like “Quand je reve, je suis un roi” (“When I dream I am a king!”), mentions of God, fitting in… I actually think this song is written very well! That’s where most of the points come from me on this. My main issue is a mixture of Hassani’s vocal range, which seems extremely restricted to a singular octave, and the composition itself. In the national selection, I kept hoping he would push the boundaries vocally, but he never did, and even when he got close to doing so, it sounded like a struggle for him. It wasn’t rescued by anything very interesting musically; basically the first 1:30 of song structure is repeated again for the final 1:20, followed by a high-ish note toward the end. “Mercy” had a somewhat weak ending, too, so this seems to be a trend with their compositions. Despite having a pretty well-rounded package for Eurovision success, this is perhaps a good example of how the “Song Contest” aspect of the jury score will be tested. I honestly have no idea how Europe will respond to Bilal or the song if they haven't heard of him until the night of ESC, but France has found itself in recent years with middle-of-the-table scores even with the most interesting entries IMHO. The song is meddling. It’s just not musically great to me, but perhaps something else about this entry will find a footing. At least he rocks the eyeglasses. ((ALSO... apparently there's a final version that we won't see or hear until Tel Aviv??))
