This rant is soooooo 2 weeks and a half late but it's the last ESC forum I'm on where I haven't vented yet. I know Bogi was somewhat extra-awarded for her niceness and the fact that she a young lil bunny performed in front of this completely deadpan but loving crowd of people and her song was completely written by Caramel (who participated in A Dal 2012 and was one of the A Dal 2019 jurors, + he and Joci are friends!), and I know Acoustic Planet were on the top as well just because the juries just have to put on the Breakthrough Award winners up there to boost them some confidence... but in the light of the final, neither of the two were the tea. Whatsoever. I'd rather if even The Middletonz have replaced one of them. They did it. They morally smashed my nerves into pieces. I should have known Leander's heat elimination was just a warnning at how the jury might be adjusting this ever-unwinnable game of chess further and further. And I do definitely understand that it was maybe that my dear Gergő Szekér was still a little nervous (even a bit more so than before, starting out his rap bit a little belated than usual), but most of the performance and the whole song deserved much more than getting Totova'd and/or even Passed'd (anyone remembers 2015's A Dal where they did not let 3 of the big fan faves of the final through to top 4?? lol). This was too much for me so I got up and left to watch our NF's resolution on the living room TV and hoped for maybe Bence Vavra to win because lolz. Now I'm faulting myself for overplaying "Madár, repülj!" to the point that I never want to listen to that song anymore, not in any shape and form, not once, not again. And I'll probably be always that bittersweet over this robbery of such gorgeous melody, such musical journey, such instrument choices, such vocal line, such lyricism, such topic, such 'originality'... and maybe such personality as well. Not unless Gergő comes back to A Dal, wiser and older and stronger, and maybe either does à la András 2012-2014 and wins or becomes the perennial A Dal phantom à la András 2016-2017;2019 / Ádám Szabó and never wins... and maybe never even decides to grace A Dal ever again. Or even does à la Passed / Ív / Bogi Dallos who had fairly succesful breakthroughs in their respective years (with the former 2 only making it so far to the final, like I said) but the follow-up hit will not be as remarkable. (God let me be overreactive and overanalyze things sometimes ) Whatever, now my ESC wishlist will have him and Leander Kills for until jury stops sleeping on fan favourites the viewers want more than the ones that the juries want usually and don't bias themselves up too much. I guess I won't rest until these guys go in the end, heh. Let me dare to dream! As for Joci, it's nice and chill and warm enough for a 7 from me, and I did have him 4th out of 8 finalists of this year so, not too bad And I do wish him the best of luck and I will say that last year I listened to a bit more of his music... but maybe his fans shouldn't have convinced him to return? idk. maybe not on this rather great enough year. p.s.: I may or may not have acquired an extra Gergő Szekér bias over a shoutout he made... like, in a Wiwi interview he spoke about where his relatives are scattered, and besides his birthcountry Slovakia and their sisterland Czechia, he also mentioned Lithuania, which was so surprising that I reacted to it, he noticed my reaction and then have the nerve to mention the reaction on an ESCBubble interview, which got me shook!

For the preparation of this review I reread my 2017 review of “Origo,” and a few things stuck out. First, there is no ‘rap’ section in “Az én apám,” and Joci admitted back then that he wasn’t a rapper… but because he had so much to say in three minutes, he added the rap to “Origo”. I get the same genuine feeling with this entry, but not in a good way: it’s still too jam-packed with lyrical content. When you look up the lyrics and their translation, the song is an homage to the memory of his father from his childhood. It’s similar to Belgium 2014 or Germany 2018, but both had drastically different outcomes. So I’ll be fresh with you guys: this doesn’t have the same immediacy as “Origo” did. At least not in the first version, which lacked a consistent mood and filled post-chorus segments with whistle synths. In the final version, and in live performances, the post-chorus has been changed to violins and ad-libbed runs of ‘na-na-na-na-na’, which is Eurovision songwriter’s slang for “I don’t know what to do with this part so I’ll hum something along” - this makes it all the more strange that I feel the verses are too full of words!! There isn’t a strong build-up, either. “Origo” used the rap to build up to the final chorus - this song uses the second “na na na” segment, repeats it, and Papai’s higher-octave runs fill our hearts with emotion. I’m concerned about this because in his final performance in ESC 2017 the higher notes began to fall flat at the end. This may not be a problem since he’s more of a seasoned act now, but if he’s ad-libbing vocal runs then anything could happen to that voice in front of millions. I struggle with pinpointing what’s missing here… perhaps it’s a bit disconnected with current pop trends? I imagine for Hungarians that there’s something magical about this performance, but as an outsider it’s just some man with easy listening music; the stuff your 50-year-old aunt would enjoy. I’m just not feeling this. Sorry? All this being said, it could easily change on the night with a stellar staging that makes you feel something deep. We’ve seen that time and time again (think 2015), and I would not put it past Hungary. Certain broadcasters will point out that he’s a returnee, it could stir some interest. But I’m pretty certain this is staying in the semifinal. That would be a shame because Hungary hasn’t *not* qualified for years, and their viewership and interest continues to drop. The Panic button needs to be pressed for 2020…
