Why can't you hold me in the street? Why can't I kiss you on the dance floor?

After Michela won the Maltese Idol competition, without much ado, the single dropped. But man, did it drop! I don’t think anyone was expecting this, so it’s a good first move. I have a friend who *loves* this song; it’s very 2010’s: the pre-chorus clap-beat drops into a bass-driven 16-beat dance groove. The first bridge incorporates tropical flourishes and melodic trumpets. It’s not inherently original, but there are bits of originality within the instrumentation. Lyrically it relies a bit too heavily on the ‘chameleon’ narrative; yes, I get that chameleons blend into their surroundings. Yes, this could probably lead to some amusing blends of color on the stage itself. But they are using technicolor and chameleon as synonyms for marvelousness; it’s a stretch. Thus, it didn’t quite reach me immediately because elements of the overall package feel overused and cliche. We can’t know how well Michela performs live (I haven’t watched any of her Maltese Idol performances, but there’s this one where she seems on point), it could be problematic. The song is vocally technical and given all the circumstances of performing in front of hundreds of millions… I’m just saying, it’s too early to jump on board. But hey, Malta’s not in my bottom ten this year, which is already a bonus. The prestige of coming after a major ballad like Croatia’s and before a bit of a schmaltzy one (Lithuania) is that it will stick out; it should go through to the Final.
