It requires a lot of sacrifice to listen to the whole song.

Why can't you hold me in the street? Why can't I kiss you on the dance floor?

On one hand, Anna Obodescu is a statuesque brunette that can sing! She really puts her all into live performances. There’s depth to her voice, and it soars over the instrumentation so flawlessly. Her song, on the other hand, is about as streamline and bland as they get. It’s a bit dated, yet I’m not really reminded of any particular song when I hear it. I just think of all the female ballad songs that have graced the stage over the last five years, and it’s like… throwing Anna into a pile. This ballad is very disposable and I can’t say it does anything special for the majority of people who hear it. Whereas “Hey Mamma” was an upbeat dance song that Europe could get behind, and whereas “My Lucky Day” was unique with Kirkorov-driven staging and clichés, Obodescu has a good voice. That's it. Vocals that fly can elevate a lame song, but it can’t fix the problem altogether. Reading the lyrics brings such emptiness to me, guys. Like, it’s basically just similes of “hold on, be strong, don’t give up, our relationship can be repaired, I love you but you were bad to me… stay.” MEH. Now here’s actually an interesting anecdote: the main lyricist and composer of “Stay” is Giorgios Kalpakidis - once you look into this man’s history, everything makes sense. He was originally a Eurovision journalist for the contest from 2000 to 2008 (is that why the song sounds like from that era?) Starting in 2004, he began writing songs for various different pre-selections. And guys… it took him till 2019 to *finally* have a song win and go to Eurovision. 15 years!!! Props for never giving up, Giorgios. But... you can do better? The take-home message is that Kalpakidis likely donated this song to Moldova, much like he has done over the last four years with various singers, and he lucked upon a fantastic singer. I don’t feel anything when I listen to it, and it’s staying in the semifinal.
