Can we have ESC every year with Petra presenting on stage with Filomena hosting the green room? Those two would be great together!
The interval acts were underwhelming overall. I did like Salvador's new song, but that's about the only thing to like with the intervals. For a first time host, Portugal did a great job overall in showcasing their country while continuing to entertain the crowd.
The voting sequence was so exciting and unpredictable. It was 2011/2016 levels of drama. And I lived for the big moments during it.
26th-11th: 39 points is a respectable score for a last placed entry, considering that often in the past, our last placers rarely get a double digit score, so Portugal should be proud of their representatives.
Saara Aalto seems to be destined to get second in some way of form. She was the
second to last country to be announced. She was drawn to the
second half of the final. Finally, she places
second to last in the final. In such a strong pool of acts, Finland reasonably faded in the background, but Saara should be happy that she was able to live her dream. Can't wait to see what the future holds for her.
That stage invasion was scary, but SuRie handled it like a professional. Before the incident, it was joyous but uninspiring. Then when it happened, SuRie sang like her life depended on it. She performed with more energy and I saw the determination in her face. SuRie will become a remembered figure among Eurovision fans.
Yes, performing second is an inevitable fail, but I feel like regardless of running order, Spain was never going to have a favorable result. The staging was a disappointment, but the best part about it is their chemistry, so I suppose that was where they put the focus. Ultimately, it was sweet, but that spark was just... a spark, not an inferno.
The performance was a lot more slick overall, but that technical "fail" induced cringe and was poorly timed this time. This result is fine for Slovenia.
Underrated, but it's a divisive genre. I had high hopes for it, but I'm not even disappointed in the result. Congrats on bringing metal to the final at least. Shoutout to Shangela for singing "YES GAWD" in the growling metal voice.
Ouch! I'm upset she placed worse than Isaiah, but with her performance, I understand. Even though she was a bit looser, her voice was still strained, her high notes were not smooth, and she relied too much on the audience interaction instead of delivering an impactful song. It's really been difficult to keep up after Dami Im's legacy. Maybe it's time to withdraw and commit to starting Eurovision Asia.
At this point, I'm indifferent about the entry. Reaching the final is what it deserves at best. Can't wait for Filomena and the old man's wedding.
Now that I see him perform for the second time, it's grown on me. It's a competent country song any American can appreciate.
I'm appalled this placed last with the juries. Surely, he wasn't an unmemorable opening the final, especially with that dramatic rise from the coffin. Bless the televote.
I relied too much on the odds thinking this would finish in the top 5.
It's a pleasure to see Ireland back in the final after long time, and I'm sure the Irish people are proud of Ryan.
Good placement. It doesn't have winner's vibes. Alexander seems like he's just there to have a good time and take on the obligation of representing Norway again.
Wow! Bulgaria gets mid-table placement for the first time. Honestly, it's underrated.
They have powerful harmonies but at the same time, their voices can stand out individually, especially Zhana. I wish them best of luck in their futures.
Another wow. They were a stylish couple, and the staging was done tastefully from the low-lying fog to the warm lighting. The crowd going along with the simple hand gestures is a visually impactful sight. I expected France to at least place in the top 10 based on hype, but I personally expected upper half, so I'm satisfied. This is another result that France should be happy with. Well done!
Ieva is so heartwarming and adorable. Ieva should be proud for giving Lithuania one of their better results.
It's official: Eugent has my favorite voice this year. Everytime he hits those high notes in the end, I get an eargasm.
This is a performance I played on repeat the most this week. The overall composition of the song is so uplifting and endearing. He made me wish I got to hear him speak/sing/whisper in person. Okay, that's enough. Congrats Albania!
TOP 10: Well done on another top 10 finish! Despite the outdated song, they were able to elevate it with a quirky and hilarious performance. I got to see a behind the scenes video of their choreography, and I have to give them huge credit for pulling off such a polished performance.
I can't believe the juries underrated them. Like what went wrong in the jury show? In the live show, they were so full of strength and determination. I felt the adrenaline. Again, I'm pleased Denmark gave us a piece of Nordic identity. Ninth place is very deserving.
My pre-show favorite, but admittedly, I've fallen less in love with it after the live performance. It just looked too perfect that I felt distant. I still appreciate the visual and musical beauty it offered in the Eurovision stage. Bravo!
In my opinion, he moved a lot looser and more naturally in the final compared to the semis, so I liked the performance more this time. However, seeing him so high in the juries I feared another Swedish win. And then the 21 points from the televote came. I just had to let out a scream/laugh of shock. Never have I imagined Sweden getting this low a score from the televote. I predicted a top 10 finish, but certainly not a messy result that contributed to that. Their top 5 streak may be broken, but their top 10 streak isn't. Maybe it's time to rethink their approach.
Very groovy! Mikolas did not hold back in the acrobatics, the humor, and the fun tonight. I am so proud of Czech Republic and Mikolas Josef! Considering this is only their second final appearance, getting sixth is a huuuuge deal. If they continue to commit, they could continue to be regulars in the contest with satisfactory results. Perhaps this may make Slovakia return if they get wind of their neighbors result (doubtful). Still disappointed we never got to see a reaction to them getting a set of 12 points yet.
Before I continue, can we talk about how two Big 5 countries are in the top five? That's a stunning feat, a first since the rule was introduced. France, Germany, and Italy stepping it up this year as we expect out of the Big 5. Happy for them! Also, had the UK accepted what would eventually be Austria's entry, we could've had the UK in the top 3. That would've been THREE Big 5 countries on the top five.
Underrated by juries (shame), but I knew that the televote would respond to the sentiment of the song. It was a little weird that after the energetic and/or heartwarming songs of the preceding entries, the last song performed is basically a sad reality check, and I think that's what helped Italy on the televote. Out of all the alleged "political" entries, Italy conveyed their message the strongest with lyrics visualized and the contrast between their voices.
This is one of my favorites of the night. It was just so touching and endearing. Bringing a wall to visualize his story was a great decision in my opinion. He was able to stand about he was the only one to bring a screen, and the projections on the screen were done well. It captivated me. I am so pleased Germany's streak of flops ended with a strong fourth place. I'm sure the German fans are ecstatic for him.
I mean, he sang great, he looked great, the staging looked great, the song is good, but winning the jury vote is... odd. He wasn't particularly a fan favorite so that was a huge surprise to see him do so well. It's overrated, but at the end of the night, Austria should be proud of their best result since Conchita Wurst's win. I have to commend Austria on their excellent five-year qualification streak. Let's see if they can keep it up next year.
Gutted. Going into the final, this had a great chance to win. Eleni maintained the energy of her performance from the semifinals. During the voting, Eleni was very emotional, and I got Kristian Kostov flashbacks because both really wanted the victory for their country. Regardless, this is Cyprus' best result ever. Maybe Eleni can return two years later and pull a Dima Bilan so that Cyprus can finally win. I can't see Cyprus having a longer drought than Portugal.
Congratulations, Netta. I suppose I was delaying the inevitable. Going in, Israel already sounded so different by Eurovision standards with the different human sound effects, the use of a looper, and the clucking. Unlike Malta, the message of the song managed to come through in the delivery of the lyrics. I didn't want it win, but at the same time, it deserved a high placement, so I'm not mad at it winning. It's catchy, sassy, and innovative. I hope we get to go to Tel Aviv next year.
P.S. - It's also worth mentioning that "Toy" charted in the
United States at #195 on iTunes! Well done, Netta!
