Another long post by a language geek Native: Frisian, Dutch C2: English B1/B2: German B1: French A2/B1?: Ancient Hebrew > Hard to position, because I only read and translate this language. A2: Russian A1: Spanish, Ancient Greek, Modern Standard Arabic (just started learning) Very limited reading skills: Catalan, Italian Nearly completely faded: Esperanto (learnt it some 5 years ago, never did anything with it again) Future projects: In a few months, I'll start an extracurricular university course in Akkadian. For the more distant future, I still have Mandarin Chinese, Ancient Egyptian, Aramaic, and (European) Portuguese courses somewhere on my shelf waiting to be followed. Less concretely, I would love to widen my linguistic horizon by learning the basics of languages from many distinct language families. For me, learning languages is not in the first place about communicating with other people. My goal is to make a living from linguistic research, preferably researching relations between languages and language families. For that purpose, I think it is very useful to have a working knowledge of the structures of as many languages as possible, to be less dependent on secondary sources for your data. (Although you can never avoid them completely, as having knowledge of all languages in the world is humanly impossible). BTW, @thesirenscalling I see we share a passion for language

Native: Azerbaijani C2: Turkish (Like most of my compatriots, I have never been in a need of studying Turkish, as it is mutually intelligible with Azerbaijani language as well as due to the impact of shared cultural background) C1: English (I passed my IELTS exam with 7.5 score back in 2016, and since 2017, August I have been studying in English. I suppose that I still need to work on my writing skills, nonetheless) B2/B1: Russian (I have studied Russian at school and university for a total period of 4 years, and worked on my Russian independently, as well. Interestingly, the number of Azerbaijani youngsters with fluent Russian gets lessened nowadays) A2/A1: French (My listening and reading skills are much better than my speaking and writing. I have studied French throughout my education at the bachelor's level, only for a semester, though. I have dedicated little time afterwards to improving my French, yet it didn't last long enough to attain significant betterment) A2/A1: Swedish (I am studying in Lund, Sweden since August 2017, yet couldn't secure a spot for myself in the municipality's free language course for foreigners, because of the large number of applications stemming from high migration flows. Notwithstanding, I am trying to learn it independently) Since Azerbaijani language borrowed many words from Persian and Arabic languages, I can understand some words/phrases/sentences in these languages. Apart from that, some Turkic languages being mutually intelligible with Azerbaijani, such as Gagauz, Crimean Tatar, etc. are easily understandable for me. For instance, I understood every word of the chorus of "1944" performed by Jamala in the Eurovision Song Contest. Yet, I can't speak these languages. I have little understanding of Turkmen, Kazakh and Uzbek languages, as well, on the account of linguistical similarities with Azerbaijani. Throughout my life, I have attempted to learn Finnish, Japanese and Hebrew languages, despite giving up eventually. The reason is not that I didn't have any interest nor the languages were difficult, rather I love to discover many languages/cultures to a great extent that I can't stuck into learning a language at one time. I have downloaded an app teaching Persian a few days ago, I am not sure how far I will be able to go this time.

100% English about 80% Chamorro - it's actually a required language to learn in Guamanian schools, why only does half of the population of guam know the language, I have no clue, but I really hope that doesn't mean it'll be dead one day, I can probably hold on a full conversation in Chamorro but I'd still struggle a bit. about 50% Spanish - A few words and phrases in Chamorro are from Spanish so ya, and I took Spanish in middle school but I'm still trying to learn. American Sign Language - idk why I just find it interesting so I took it for my 1st year of high school and it's actually quite easier to learn than I thought it was. Samoan - My family are constantly trying to teach me Samoan lol it's actually a very beautiful language and its soooo easy to learn, like if you're interested in learning a Oceanic language I would 100% recommend Samoan A little bit: Japanese - such a beautiful language, I recently started to learn how to speak it. flagmnewzealand Maori - I have a few kiwi friends that have recently got me into the very beautiful language of Maori and its also pretty easy to learn so I'm definantly going to get into that more. French Languages I want to learn: Arabic Italian Swahili maybe Korean maybe Russian maybe Greek
