LA CANZONE SAMMARINESE Sorry, this is going to be a bit long... Since Luna Melis finished 3rd, qualifying San Marino directly to the final of the 39th edition, I will take this opportunity to send a song that I deeply liked with no risk of premature elimination. But both the singer and the song deserve an introduction. First of all, the singer. As I already explained, Luna Melis was in competition with other emerging talents of my pre-selection. One of them has already been spotted: Sherol dos Santos. Another one is the artist I'm going to send now. Carmen Ferreri was born on 9th December 1999 in Sicily and I already considered the idea of sending one of her previous singles multiple times. Despite her young age, her career is already quite rich - she is active since 2015 - with a participation to the famous TV show Amici di Maria De Filippi (the one that Annalisa won in 2010), Area Sanremo (one of the satellite contests of Sanremo) and the Premio dei Premi (a contest where winners of various Italian awards compete against each other) after she won the Premio Lelio Luttazzi at the age of 17 (category singers-songwriters). The most noticeable patterns about her are the strength of her voice and the quality of her interpretation.
Now, the song: Non è amore (This is not love), the first single of her new album. The lyrics were written by Manuel Finotti (20 years old). The song was directly inspired by a dramatic event that took place in Manuel's neighbourhood: one carabiniere committed suicide after killing his daughters and wounding his ex-wife. As he explained during an interview, Manuel Finotti wanted to use this event to make a song against violence towards women and he tried to imagine what happened in the mind of the surviving woman who lost her daughters because of a violent ex-husband. So he wrote the thoughts she could have had in the past and the letter she could have written to her daughters to tell her to choose carefully who they would share their life with. There are two main characters in the music video: the daughter (Carmen Ferreri) and the mother (Maria Pia Calzone, an actress who played for example in the TV series Gommora). So even if Carmen is singing, the ideas are her mother's (speaking to her husband and to her daughter), who realises that her husband's feelings are definitely not love but an "absurd obsession" and that she has become a kind of punching-ball when her husband wants to "wash his remorses away" (he barely watches his wife and cheated her numerous times). At the end, the mother says: "My daughter, I wrote you all my pain in this letter. Be very careful of who you trust."
