The Dome

The onion dome is a type of architectural dome that tapers smoothly to a particular point. This bulbous, distinctive and deeply rooted in every spiritual practice structure represents safety and hope, serving both religious and secular purposes.

The symbolism of the colors of Orthodox domes is not strictly assigned, but can be extrapolated from the rules guiding Orthodox art. For instance, in Orthodox iconography, gold represents the light and nature's divinity. Blue color signifies eternal life while white is a symbol of the light, and is also used to denote righteousness and purity.
