Random question - why are the contests and entries presented as short recaps videos on YouTube? Don't people listen to the songs in full? If so how do you share? I mean wouldn't it make more sense to have a YouTube playlist for all entries.

So I get changing the flags, but what are "Free Russia" and "Free Belarus" supposed to mean? Are they meant to be new governments (in-exile)? Correct me if I'm wrong, but it comes off like the NBU is saying regime change is the end goal of this ban. (And there's also negative implications in putting 'Free' in the name of a country (e.g. Congo Free State, Irish Free State)) TL;DR - Democracy is great and all, but don't feed into this BS about the west wanting to "spread freedom" worldwide. And fuck Russia either way. I still respect the NBU's decision regarding all this, but I just had to say something. thank you for sharing your opinion. i am only able to respond to the second half of your message as this is something i've personally advocated for in our discussions. the name change was meant to highlight our solidarity with the people of russia and belarus (and by extension, ukrainians) who are being oppressed, locked up, tortured and killed as we speak. further, it is meant to put distance between our artists and their association with the regime. we discussed the noun "free" alongside "democratic" as two options and chose the former to remain as unpolitical as possible, which admittedly is quite impossible as we already make a statement with this. it would have mattered not which noun we chose, both are inappropriate. we, the nbu council, have agreed that this usage of the term "free" is problematic and thus, we will strictly keep it to the new flags shown next to "russia" and "belarus" for now in our videos until a better solution can be found, if any. I mean wouldn't it make more sense to have a YouTube playlist for all entries. this comes from an old tradition in which the first youtube contests produced recaps to have a quick summary of the songs. originally those used to serve as a refresher for voting while you had ideally listened to the songs in full before. over time, those recaps evolved in some contests, including north vision, serving as the highlight of the contest next to the results. nowadays there are a number of people who vote solely by watching the recap, while a good amount of people go through the songs in full at least once, sometimes multiple times. originally most youtube contests had playlists with the music videos or videos with the full songs in them, or links to where one could listen to the songs such as soundcloud and bandcamp. nvsc even had full shows for the semi-finals and the grand final with every entry being shown in full length, some editions (like in #19) the nbu council even rendered individual postcards and the videos in traditional esc length. nvsc also used to publish albums akin to the yearly eurovision cd's with the songs being cut to 3 minute versions. nowadays, in the streaming era, nigh all entries are available on spotify and thus this contest has opted to have a playlist on spotify for each edition as well as the semi-finals and the grand final for everyone who wishes to vote this way. as far as i know there is no official youtube playlist being made anymore due to lack of demand, but if there is enough people voting this way we will consider making those again. |

Getting rid of Russia and Belarus because of human rights violations but no one wants to get rid of Israel or Egypt for example seems odd to me? Or even the UK famous for selling weapons used to destroy parts of the Middle East?
Like it's been noted with the whole issue in general that the comparative more sympathy given to Ukrainians (and Europeans in general) than those with darker skin is suspicious at best. I don't take part in any contests anymore but like it's just...eh
