Before we start with the main tournament, we need to decide which two debutants will drop out at the play-offs. Read along!
Parola v Latitude Republic
Play-off *** Friday 24 April 18.00 *** RiArena, flagantalorgia Novgorod *** Referee: Alexander Tono
willsong v Grace
The first match of the Spring edition - the play-off between Parola and the Latitude Republic - started off quite matte, for the first half only saw a mistake by Latitude goalkeeper Theo Lamb not being turned into good use by the daydreaming Parolans and Parola midfielder Milo Montán incurring a concussion by running into the goalpost during a corner (he’ll be absent at Parola’s matches for the next week).
The second half was about to go similarly, until suddenly, in the 70th minute, Latitude striker Andrew Moylan tried a breakout and was brought down inside the penalty area aggressively by Parola defender Karl Hillmann. Karl was shown a yellow card by referee Tono, the Latitudes got a penalty kick, and midfielder Paul Abel turned it into good account.
That was the wake-up call for the Parolans, and from that moment on the Latitudes were pinned to their own half. Ten minutes later, Francis Brown Coppola had scored twice - unfortunately to him, both goals were rejected by the referee for offside. Lamb’s middle finger just managed to keep a long shot by Sean Hillmann out of the gate, and Ed Smith’s header grazed the goalpost before going beside it.
But finally, in the second minute of injury time, the Parolan efforts were rewarded when during a corner kick, their midfielder Jan Kolarov stood completely uncovered in the penalty area and shot it right past Lamb. The Latitudes were very close to preventing extra time through a solo action by Jacob Greer (who had entered the field at the expense of Moylan only five minutes earlier) whose shot ultimately ricocheted against the crossbar, but it was inevitable.
An offensive by the Parolans resulted in Jeb Ricketts (substitute of Brown) scoring only eighteen seconds after the kickoff, leaving the Latitudes with an even bigger task than they could ever have expected ten minutes earlier, especially when Smith scored after a counter attack, making the interim score 3-1. But before the first half of extra time, Latitude midfielder Mike Gaved partially saved the Latitudian day by sending the ball crashing into the crossbar, whereupon Greer headed it right over the head of the Parolan goalkeeper, Rico Fritzko, and into the goal. He became candidate for the title of ‘Latitudian Hero of the Day’ when he laid the foundation of the counter attack which resulted in Sean Watson easily kicking the ball past Fritzko and marking the equaliser.
Then it was time for penalty kicks, and it took no less than eleven of them to decide the winner. Following the score of 3-3 after five kicks, it went on until 5-5 after ten. Then the goalkeepers were to take the kicks: Fritzko scored, but Lamb slipped during his attempt and missed terribly. Parola proceeds to the main tournament, Latitude Republic needs to wait another edition to appear.
Arazonas v Keyholeland
Play-off *** Friday 24 April 21.00 *** Talis Arena, Leranograd *** Referee: Quincy DeGraw
Marco Antonio [QUITE INACTIVE] v Dylan
The other play-off for the Spring edition of the CFA World Cup started off much more interesting. Both debutants were intent to qualifying for the main tournament, and so they played like their lives depended on it. Let’s take the 9th minute, in which Keyholeland goalkeeper Lee Brendan kept away Plurencio Jotarco’s blazing long shot by a marvellous bicycle kick, or the 16th, which saw a goal from an impossible angle by Keyholeland striker Felix Plox rejected for just offside.
The tension blew over after about twenty minutes, and Plox’ 30th minute goal out of a counterattack lead by Lars Clarkson almost came as a surprise. The expected counteroffensive by the Arazonians unfortunately failed to appear, and the half-time break was a relief for the lately bored audience.
The second half started off fairly exciting, with constant pressure of the Arazonians on the Keyholians. Oscar Ñacata’s marvellous free kick from a distance of about thirty metres was beaten off just in time by Brendan, and an extremely long shot - from a distance of 79 metres - by Arazonas goalkeeper Luis Manuel Frikster ended up on the Keyholian goalpost. Everyone felt it was only a matter of time before Arazonas would level the score, and so Elías Eggertsson’s goal after a solo action by Plox in the 66th minute came like a bolt from the blue.
This second goal finally broke the Arazonian revolt, and the match slowly came to a halt, just like at the end of the first half. Keyholeland’s supporters celebrated their victory in the streets of Leranograd, while some of the highly distressed Arazonian supporters were arrested for quarrelling with Keyholians.
Main Tournament Allocation Draw expected tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon!
