Welcome to San Diego, California!
This is the 3rd edition of 50 States Of Song, an annual contest in which 50 songs from each of the 50 U.S. states compete for a grand prize. Who said it wouldn't last? Not having a board won't kill us off!
San Francisco and Los Angeles were possible host cities, but the ultimate winner was San Diego! San Diego is a port city that closely borders Mexico and is home to about 2 million people. It is known for its vivacious Mexican-American culture, its zoo (one of the biggest in the USA), and is host to several key landmarks! Definitely a tourist city, but unique to itself compared with Hollywood or northern California. I've stayed in several of the hotels and been to the Convention Center downtown several times.
The contest is set to begin in mid to late-February of next year (2018). There will be a few changes to the way votes are submitted, as we will be doing a Jury + Public vote. More updates on that later.
--------------
For now, we are having an OPEN CALL for 2018 contest entries! We've created a song submission form this time; you'll receive credit for any song that you submit that gets chosen. The deadline for submitting potential songs is February 12, 2018.

--------------
The "main" rules that all songs must abide by:
- The song must not be longer than 3 minutes, 30 seconds.
- The song must be originally composed/produced. No covers!
- No (J)ESC songs (although this is probably impossible anyway.)
- The artist should be from the US state they represent, or have strong connections to that state (like, they were born or grew up there.)
- The song must have been "officially" released during the previous year (2017). Officially, this means the CD or music video was released in 2017.
- The artist must be 14 years or older (so they must've been born before January 1st, 2004.)
- It's preferred that the song has some kind of music video release.
- Charts Rule: The artist cannot have had a Top 40 hit on any of the following Billboard charts prior to the date of the contest:
The Hot 100, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, Pop Songs, Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, Hot Country Songs, Hot Rock Songs, or Hot Latin Songs.
- The reason we enforce the Charts Rule is because we want lesser-known artists participating. Go away, Beyoncé!

What's the purpose of this contest, exactly?
We're recreating the magic of Eurovision for the states of the USA, and we're trying to show that there's more to American pop music than what's produced in L.A. or New York City. This contest allows newcomers in every corner of the country to have a platform. You can find unique musical flavours and hidden gems in #50SS.
Why should I care?
It's fun? It's interesting? You can participate by submitting songs, and even if you don't, anybody can vote. If a song you submitted gets chosen to represent one of the states, you will be credited accordingly. Beyond that, we're an annual contest only, so no burn-out. And I've been able to film/record a video in the host states, so umm WE'RE ACTUALLY "HOSTING" IN WHICHEVER STATE WINS! I traveled to Arizona last year, and it was hella fun!
Watch last year's contest by clicking this link.
We also get attention from artists in the contest - despite much attention beyond contest forums - so that's cool, right?

America is stupid, though! You're ruining lives! I hate you all!
I KNOW.. :/ not because of my doing, believe me. So, umm... if you have an extra room at your house...
But please still vote.

A small council is running the contest behind the scenes to make sure there is a song for each of the 50 states. I can't guarantee that a format of two semifinals will be used again, but California's entry will *for sure* pre-qualify, and the remaining 49 states (plus District of Columbia) will battle it out for a Grand Final of 25 songs (24 qualifiers + California). Additionally, I'll be doing *much more* cross-promotion for 2018 (Reddit ho!) and a blog feed has been set up on our web page.
So, what say you? Let the search for songs begin!!
