FIRST SEMI-FINAL
Let me explain briefly the origin of the name of our selection. As you might know, I played in the movie Die Welle (The Wave in English), which is about a social experiment that took place in a college (and drifted a bit too far, but you'll have to see the movie in order to know what I mean...). We chose to retake the name because this selection is a bit experimental and because we hope that the "wave" will bring us at the highest possible ranking among more awaited songs.
We selected 10 songs, that will compete in two semi-finals. In each heat, you will be able to vote for up to two songs and at the end, two or three songs (depending how close the votes are) of each semi-final will be selected for the Grand Final.
Let's discover together the result of the draw and the five first songs in competition...
Our first song will be the only Schlager entry of our selection. It would be difficult to sum up Maite Kelly's life. She was born in Germany from a German Finnish mother and an American Irish father and travelled a lot in Europe in USA because she was part of a family band with her parents and her 11 siblings. She finally settled in Cologne and began a successful career of Schlager singer. She joins the competition with her song Jetzt oder nie (Now or never). It's basically a love song but the other meaning of a turn in her personal life and in her career is also correct ("Heute Nacht fängt ein neues Leben an" - "Tonight a new life begins").
The next contestant could easily have become a Schlager singer like... her father, Jürgen Drews. But she chose another way and started going back and forth between Germany and Los Angeles. Her work is heavily influenced by American pop and R&B music so you won't be surprised when you're going to listen her very catchy song Skybar. Joelina is only 22 years old but she is active in the music industry since quite a long time so we can definitely say that she is plenty ready to become a star.
The next contestant is also a rising star. Dimi Rompos made the four chairs of The Voice Germany turn in 2015 with her stunning R&B version of the jazz standard Cry me a river and was eliminated just before the final. Her nice song Landschwimmer (Ground swimmer) brings also us a beautiful message. The main idea is about making together the world greater and more beautiful.
Random.org must be a genious...
Because the next song also gives a similar message. This time the idea is that even if each of us speaks his own language, music is the universal language that brings all of us together ("Even if we are milliards, we are one"). So the title Eine Sprache (One Language) seems logical. The music video has been filmed in the streets of Stuttgart, where the local pop duo made its debut a bit more than four years ago. They got associated with Cassandra Steen, another local singer. Even if she looks very young, she is actually 38 years old and she began her career more than 20 years ago.
The last song of the first semi-final is probably the most fascinating. With her voice, her red hair and her silver eyes, she could be Irish, but Patty Gurdy is an authentic German artist from Düsseldorf. Her voice fits perfectly well with her strange instrument, a hurdy gurdy, making this entry totally timeless, with modern and traditional influences. There are actually two versions of the song: the solo Patty Gurdy version that we chose for the competition but also the version (actually the original one, even if the music video is more recent) she made with her group, the German pirate folk band Storm Seeker. You'll find the group version below if you want to compare.
Now it's time to vote! See you soon for the second part of our selection!
