Hello hello! I posted about potentially having forum awards a few weeks ago in the random discussion and got a positive reception to it, so I've come up with a few ideas about them and want to share them with you.
I've modelled the awards similarly to the Oscars; with an academy who will have an active involvement in the nomination/voting processes and a panel who will oversee the entire thing as well as the voters of the forum.
I created the thread because the awards are supposed to the reflect the entire forum's opinions with due diligence and my own opinion alone is not enough. I want to keep the whole thing as transparent as possible to keep accusations of bias and rigging at bay ( ) and of course people's opinions are going to differ with how they see certain things so the more, the merrier.
Please please please leave your thoughts and any other ideas you may have below, the only bad ideas are the ones that haven't been expressed! I'm also looking for a team to help me with the entire thing as I can't do it on my own.
I've tagged everyone who liked the post - if you want to be tagged also just like this post or let me know.
I aim to form the Forum Awards in a way which is fair, transparent and representative of the forum's opinions as a way of documenting and enshrining these iconic moments so they are more than just a bunch of screenshots in peoples' camera rolls and memories at the back of people's minds.
STRUCTURE
THE PANEL
The Panel will consist of five members, who will oversee the awards and the processes of submission, nomination and voting. Apart from these responsibilities, the panel will not have any additional special privileges. Unlike the Academy, whose membership is determined based upon certain criteria, to be chosen as a member of the panel requires nothing more than your ability to be impartial and do a good job. The only limitation is that members of the panel must also be members of the Academy.
THE ACADEMY
The Academy is a group of forumers who have an active involvement within the OVSC community across all avenues. The Academy does not exist as a form of elitism or exclusivity, but to ensure that those who are much more heavily involved in the community and therefore more informed on matters have a more active involvement in the process. Criteria for Academy membership consists of several factors, such as activity, involvement in social interaction, participation in contests, among other things which would deem one to be ‘actively involved within the community’. Certain Academy members may also wish to design the so called 'award' winners will receive and aesthetics for 'ceremonies'.
AWARDS - PROCESSES
The Awards will consist of two categories – categorical awards (such as ‘Screenshot of the Year’, ‘Funniest Roast’), and an overall list of ‘The Most Iconic Moments of 2018’.
SUBMISSION PHASE
The first phase of the awards will be the submission phase. This will be split into two stages. The first stage will be a submission of categories you think are suitable of an award. All ideas are welcome.
The second stage, once the award categories have been determined, will be the submission of potential nominees. In this phase, users may submit any moments they deem worthy of nomination. There will be no limit to the number of submissions a user can make, but you have the responsibility to make sure that these submissions are acceptable. This means that if your nomination involves other people and could be perceived as offensive, embarrassing or contain anything that an individual may not consent to that is not public knowledge, you must get their permission first. Nominations are exempt from this scrutinisation if they have become a matter of public knowledge; circumstances that are infamous do not have protection (these awards shouldn’t be sensitive to censorship nor should they be a method of exposing people for things that aren’t public knowledge).
In order for a nomination to advance to the next phase, it must be seconded. This means that the same potential nomination must be submitted by yourself and at least one other. You can get others to second your submissions if you wish. Submissions that have been submitted three, four or any greater times will have this considered in the next phase. This is done to filter the number of potential nominations and discard the less notorious ones.
Please note that these are not awards to compare things on the forum, so ideas such as ‘Best Contest’ and ‘Best Winner’ will not be considered. Awards that may induce comparisons but that are open ended, such as ‘Best Edition in any Contest’ may exist however. These awards are to tribute iconic moments of the forum.
NOMINATION PHASE
In this phase, the Academy goes through a process of scrutinising the submitted potential nominations. For categorising awards, this process will be laxer.
In the first stage of scrutinisation, the Academy will classify each potential nomination into the category they believe fits it the most. To ensure that a wide number of submissions are nominated and to prevent the domination of entries as nominees, a submission is classified into a maximum of three different categories.
After categorisation has taken place, the second stage of scrutinisation will take place. The potential nominations in each category will be narrowed down to produce five nominees. For awards with a smaller pool of potential nominees, this process of narrowing down will only be done once, but for awards with a larger number of submissions, this process may have to be repeated.
After the nomination phase has concluded, the award categories will be announced, followed by the nominees.
BEING NOMINATED
If you have been nominated, congratulations! It is up to you as to whether you campaign for votes or not, however, we ask that politics is kept to a minimum and that all voters vote based not on the person(s) nominated or strategically but based on the nominee you believe deserves the award the most.
VOTING
In addition to having an active involvement in the submission and nomination processes, the Academy will have a 50% stake in each vote. Once again, this is based upon the fact that the Academy will consist of the most active and involved members of the community, who as a result, will be more 'informed' in matters and therefore will make more informed choices to ensure the most deserving winners are chosen. This is done to ensure those who are more informed on the nominees and their ‘impact’ or ‘iconic-ness’ have adequate representation.
Forumers not part of the Academy will form the other 50% of the vote. Members of the Academy are forbidden from casting extra votes as part of this vote.
WINNERS
The nominee with the most votes will be declared the winner.
In the case of a tie, the votes of the Academy will be given preference.
The recipient of an award will be the person(s) who the award involves, and not the person(s) who nominated it. If the award concerns a contest, it will be awarded to either the contest itself or its council, depending on the award.
