MAIN CHALLENGE
My queens, as millennials, we have to prove that our generation is one of the most iconic ones musically. Let's take a look back. So happy 2000 and whatever!
Mariah de la Storm and Stan Kan McCann, as the winners of last week's challenge, you will be team captains.

Team Mariah de la Storm • 2000sMARIAH DE LA STORM AMY MACDONALD • "THIS IS THE LIFE"
Timeslot: 2:26+ | KRAMPU$$Y AMY WINEHOUSE • "BACK TO BLACK" Timeslot: 3:22+ | AMNESIA SCANNER NELLY FURTADO • "SAY IT RIGHT"
| TEA REX M.I.A. • "PAPER PLANES" Timeslot: 0:50+ |
As a team we immediately agreed on showing a lot of versatility. We think we succeeded at collecting remarkable yet rather unique songs to represent the wide range of different genres throughout the 2000s. Our entries depict four of those genres: Back to Black portrays a genre that wasn't mainstream at all in the 00s which is what helped Amy to rise to stardom with her unique soul and jazz talent, with Back to Black being one of, if not THE best songs. Say It Right, one of Nelly's biggest hits during her peak, represents the R'n'B sound that was big in most parts of the 00s. Paper Planes, by British Rapper M.I.A., is deemed one of the best 00s hits and cuts more into the alternative hip-hop scene. Finally we have This Is The Life, another big hit from the 00s, which is a more indie, folk-ish song and a song that surely everyone remembers from their childhoods. All of these songs are remarkable in their own way, either for having an impact on the whole 00s music world or just for being very popular hits.

90s vs 00s 90s ASHLEY NICOLETTE FRANGIPANE FIONA APPLE – "CRIMINAL"
Timeslot: 3:11+
I chose "Criminal" as I thought exploring the somewhat less prominent art-pop aspect of the 90s music industry would be an interesting approach in contrast to the other more prominent aspects of the industry at that time.
| CŒUR DE MEME CHUMBAWAMBA – "TUBTHUMPING"
Timeslot: 2:20+
This decade was dominated by rock bands and very intriguing choruses, tunes that were fairly positive. I personally sang this song in music classes growing up and have fond memories of it playing on the radio. A true icon that remains to be fairly original and does not overstimulate. | MUCLANNA SKUNK ANANSIE – "BRAZEN (WEEP)"
Timeslot: 2:30+
I think this song is underrated and iconic. It really illustrates that rock side of the 90's. Skunk Anansie's raspy voice really makes the song stand out. The lyrics are about revenge on someone who has hurt you in the past. People can relate to this as everyone has been hurt and feels like they need to get their own back on them and make them feel the same pain. For me, this is taking a risk as I haven't sent anything like this, but I think this can stand out. | STAN KAN MCCANN SPICE GIRLS – "SPICE UP YOUR LIFE"
Timeslot: 1:44 or 2:22+
I've decided to go in a direction that people may not have expected from me, given my track record. How can you possibly have a 90s throwback without including one of the most iconic girlgroups of all time? This is not their most known song, but the song slaps hard! I relate to the title this week, for I feel as if I'm Spicing Up my DSR song history! |
This week, all four of our queens had open discussions about the 90s music scene. Whilst none of us grew up during this age of music, it was certainly a pleasure to delve into the past in order to pull out some amazing entries and deliver songs that actually felt as if they came from the 90s! We have each sent a great song in four different styles and tempos of music, to showcase the variety and versatility of the 90's music industry, as well as us as individual queens. I would like to say that it was a pleasure working well with this team, for we all pulled our own equal weight and gave good advice throughout. Credit to Dimitris for the post format!
