WEEK SIX Theme: As a group, send songs associated with black.
BABY ADAMS Zola Jesus - Soak Black is AUTHORITY. Soak delivers a connection between life and death and the acceptance of things upon being murdered, so the idea by Zola Jesus. She’s not happy about this death but she’s also not opposed to it. An expression used for death is to be “set free”, a sentiment that implies moving onto a better place while being released of burdens. This she is not. She’s apologizing for being indifferent and pitiless of her life, not giving her killer the satisfaction of watching her fight for it. I am not free but I am sorry I am stone This song reassured that you have authority over yourself - the major definition that black runs with. CURRY RAE JEPSEN Little Simz - Venom Timeslot 2:02+ Black is REBELLIOUS. This is a massive risk to go for as rap isn't seen often, but at its core, this song is as black as it gets. As a female in the male-dominated rap industry, Little Simz is oftentimes overlooked despite her skills as an emcee. The emancipation of women in this industry is rebellious on its own, and this song and the album it's on are something that clearly helped Little Simz get her point across, as this album was a massive success critically. They would never wanna admit I'm the best here From the mere fact that I've got ovaries It's a woman's world, so to speak Pussy, you sour Never givin' credit where it's due 'cause you don't like pussy in power The song also discusses many other topics that could be related to the colour black: primarily also discussing mental illness and depression, and relating them to Little Simz' struggle in the industry, but also women's struggles as a whole, really going deep into the rebellion against the status quo and proving that women have the strength to accomplish anything. Life sucks and I never tried suicide Mind's fucked even more than I realise Black is associated with power, strength, authority, and aggression & rebellion. It can also be mysterious and sonically in its instrumental, so is this song. PANDORA D. LUX RAIGN - When It's All Over Timeslot 3:00+ Black is NEGATIVE. This song is associated with "black" in its own unique way. Although the video is bright, there is a sense of darkness shown through everyone in the video - both externally through the dancers and Raign herself in all black clothing and and internally through the lyrics as explained further below: Deep into the Darkness, we all got lost. These are the first few lines of the song is a great way to take you to the root of the song, when we refer to darkness, everyone refers to black. This could suggest someone trying to find their way but ends up getting lost because of the darkness that they are within. This could be both in the outside but could be on the inside as well, fighting any demons within. We've lost the sun. As one of the lines in the chorus of the song, "We've lost the sun" suggests that the light has faded away and your now left in pitch black of darkness. This depressive and pessimistic thought creates a distinct fear of the future - another attribute assigned with black. But the future too is mysterious Come back from the future For we didn't fall Personal side - Sometimes, I've felt lost, not knowing what to do in certain suggestions. I've always struggled with anxiety, I worry about most things in life, I'm always afraid to make the wrong decision as I may be wrong and I may upset someone. But like in the song, "heaven hold us" my mum is watching over me and I know she will guide me on the right path and direct the black darkness away! She will always be my guardian angel in heaven.CLARA POMPEII ALEZZANDRA - Bad Woman Timeslot 2:20+ Black is STRONG. Bad Woman is a song that tells the story of metamorphosis. American-swedish-serbian Alezzandra found herself at a low point in her self-confidence upon writing this song; she was fed up and angry with those around her and was fighting internal demons. As the final chapter of The Black Rose EP, “Bad Woman” represents her transition from an innocent, scared and shy girl, to a powerful, confident woman: a bad woman. The track is also a dedication to a man who prompted the change, and who ultimately had to disappear in order for Alezzandra to embark on her new path to become ‘The Black Rose.’ I am weak. This line shows the innocence of human heart in this cruel world Black is seductive and strong, I wanted to show the Power and the darkness of a human heart, how ppl around us change us to the point of us stopping being completely who we used to be. It shows how human behavior can make a white turn into black, how a good person can become bad but also strength, authority and surpassing your own demons into coming towards that power of being strong I am sorry my love, that you had to become a chosen one. This talks about a person who make her sick of her weak persona and made her a strong person. Honestly, after seeing her own view of the song, I fucking love this even more AUTH Rubio - Hacia El Fondo Timeslot 2:39+ Black is MYSTERIOUS. Absolute gem of a song and very proud to present to you: Rubio. This is a song sung in Spanish, hence the direct translation may be a bit shaky, but it encompasses mystery and the desire to be close to someone that does not keep you updated in the light of realities; Rubio are dancing in the dark to realise what this relationship is about, in a gloomy setting. Bailo en la oscuridad y se que el tiempo nunca es para siempre I dance in the dark and I know that time isn't lasting forever Black is all about struggling while portraying a different face or fassade: it is a serious colour that dwells so much deeper. This song portrays a relationship characterised by power and control, on who's on top. Our actions might endanger the ones we love, so we keep them distanced, an arm-length away to keep everyone away from harm. In the end of the video, Rubio embrace each other - a sign of unity? I beg to differ, the dance choreography seems to display the ongoing dispute with no conclusive ending: At some portions, it seems more suffocating and dominating the other than loving: The choreography hints at two people dancing beside each other more so than in front. I connect this heavily with the avoidant power that is explained with black. However - and this is highly interpretative and psychological appealing perhaps - it could be that the choreography depicts one person that is split in two, the song displaying a self-centered conflict that tries to portray itself as more elegant and sophisticated on the outside. Ese misterio frío Tengo miedo de mi That cold mystery I am afraid of myself

BLACK VS. WHITE WHITE MADISON M. DELONGPRE OX – "HIDDEN"
Timeslot: 1:41
"Hidden" represents clarity, purity and innocence. Hidden has a very tranquil and peaceful sound while the lyrics show love to another person in pure and faithful way.
Are we dancing above the treetops Are we heading for stardom Arms the river I reach for something Firm, you're all that I long for
Let me love you sweeter, harder I will be yours this morning let me try to trace your heart through the hands of time
Hey, We are heading where lost time were off to the garden we are liberal love will always surround us
Let me love you sweeter, harder I will be yours this morning let me try to trace your heart through the hands of time let me move along your motion deeper and I crawl in Let me love you sweeter, harder I will be yours this morning
Let me love you sweeter, harder I will be yours this morning let me try to trace your heart through the hands of time let me move along your motion deeper and I crawl in Let me love you sweeter harder I will be yours throughout this morning | CAND ICE PERFUME GENIUS – "SLIP AWAY"
Timeslot: 2:25+
"Slip Away" represents new beginning in the verses talking about birth and not holding back. The song also represents equality as it accepts everyone for who they are. The lyrics of the first chorus also reveal a sign of purity, as they reveal the birth of the sound that comes out of us.
Don't hold back, I want to break free Cause it's singing through your body And I'm carried by the sound Every jump, every single beat They were born from your body And I'm carried by the sound Oh, ooh love They'll never break the shape we take Oh, ooh Baby let all them voices slip away Don't look back, I want to break free If you'll never see 'em coming You'll never have to hide Take my hand, take my everything If we only got a moment Give it to me now Oh, ooh love They'll never break the shape we take Oh, ooh Baby let all them voices slip away No caressing, no caressing No caressing, no caressing No caressing, no caressing No caressing, no caressing, no Oh, ooh love They'll never break the shape we take Oh, ooh, no love They'll never break the shape we take Oh, ooh, love love They'll never break the shape we take Oh, ooh Baby let all them voices slip away | DYSLEXYA LEVV – "COLLATERAL DAMAGE"
Timeslot: 3:19+
I chose this song because it fits the theme by being about love and new beginnings which are things associate with white. I connect with this song on a personal level because the first part sound like you're hanging on to the past, which I tend to do very often, but once the chorus drops all these feelings go away and a new beginning arrives.
Collateral damage, is that all I am? Adrift in the wreckage of your sleight of hand Is there a reason why I can’t heal, I can't heal? Hate everything that you made me feel, made me feel
But I still love you And I still love you
Collateral damage, is that all you are? Just bones grown old around a broken heart Is there a reason why you can’t heal, you can't heal? Hate everything that he made you feel, made you feel But I still love you Oh I still love you
Collateral damage, is that all this was? Were these ten years worth all that we lost? And all the the shit that you dragged me through I dragged you through We’ll never fix what we broken in two, broke in two
But I still love you Oh, I still love you Oh, I still love you Yeah, I still love you
I did my best not to miss you I did my best not to miss you I did my best not to miss you I did my best not to miss you
But I still love you Yeah, I still love you Ooh, I still love you Oh, I still love you I still love you I still love you Yeah, I still love you Oh, I still love you | GLORIA HOLE BOKEH – "GREAT HEIGHTS"
Timeslot: 2:39+
"Great Heights" is about the loss of a loved one and beginning a new chapter in your life without them. The white symbolics present in this song are a new beginning, sincerity and heaven. The pure and ethereal sound of the song adds to the "white" feeling.
yours Into the *lilac snow*
*Lilac snow is the color of the sunset sky, meaning the lyric is a metaphor for reaching heaven."*
Conserve Control me You are the one to hold Take hold Give from Into the final road Inhale, inhale Get on your ocean waves Until
And I wonder And I wonder Don't you remember The great heights The great heights Don't you remember
You go Into the city lights Implode explode Do what you got to do Its through
And I wonder And I wonder Don't you remember The great heights the great heights Don't you remember
All the world we tried to see All the words that we repeat All the months that we forget All that can be mend again All the things we never changed All the days we never know All the things we got through All the bridges that we burned All the thoughts we tried to change
Reaching far away |
TERRA YAKI NATHAN WAGNER – "INNOCENCE" Timeslot: 4:24+
Nathan Wagner’s innocence is about his journey away from a place of darkness. The song talks about him being cleansed and becoming pure and innocent again. White is commonly associated with innocence and purity so I knew this would be a great fit. The lyric “your memories aren’t your destiny” also symbolizes white and innocence as even in darkness and wickedness, there is always a shroud of light and innocence.
Before my garment lost it’s white Before I saw my father cry When fear was never on my mind Take me there
When all I saw was silver gold When shadows didn’t have a hold Before I always needed more Take me there
Bring me to the garden where we’d go And cleanse my soul, cleanse my soul Free me of this anger that I hold And make me whole, make me whole
Darling won’t you let it go You don’t have to let it hold you Listen to the light Don’t let the darkness take you
Always in this inner fight Do I listen to the voice that says I’m Worthless never will be right Do I try to keep my head up high Though I feel that I deserve it all These daggers going through my chest Can’t you see the devastated souls The remains of my own foolishness
I’ll bring you to the garden where we’d go And cleanse your soul, cleanse your soul I’ll free you of this anger that you hold And make you whole, I’ll make you whole
Darling won’t you let it go You don’t have to let it hold you Listen to the light Don’t let the darkness take you
Your memories, aren’t your destiny
If I looked you in the eye And showed the broken things inside I won’t run away, I won’t run away If you saw my darkest parts The wicked things inside my heart I won’t run away, I won’t run away
Listen to the light Listen to the light Lighten to the light Listen to the light Listen to the light Lighten to the light Listen to the light
