WEEK TEN Theme: Send a song by an LGBTQIADP+ artist.
27 CLUB by Adore Delano PRIDE EXTRAVAGANZA Timeslot 3:42+ DESCRIPTION When I think of an iconic singer from our community, a role model and inspiration, my mind tends to go to drag queens; it's a bit unpopular to love their art form and I was actually hoping for a drag queen themed challenge to support their huge importance. Adore isn't just a drag queen though: she's been to American Idol, she has released multiple albums and actually works as a licensed, labelled singer professionally, not because it's a way to earn money on the side. Important information on 27 Club
This song and artist is loved by one of the judges, and I will not try to cover it as a secret. I'm aware that this might seem like straight-up pandering. One might also reason that Adore isn't my most scrobbled drag artist and there's no legitimacy for me to call her my favourite, which is also valid. I still see 27 Club as the best song by a drag queen and furthermore a good song to represent the community. I been trying, and I been buying, and I've been lying, and I've been crying ... "27 Club" is a reference to the '27 Club', a list of popular musicians, artists or actors that have died at the age of twenty seven, often as a result of drug and alcohol abuse, or violent means such as homicide, suicide, or transportation-related accidents. Adore, also, was 27 when releasing the song and it adds to the ominous feeling it radiates. It's a full on package; her smoky voice, the guitar in the background, and the sultry tale of celebrities like Amy Winehouse. All of the legends Die at twenty seven They all went to heaven All of the legends On a final note, this song can leave you feeling pretty lonely, trying to escape a dreaded path; I believe Adore was influenced by the 27 Club itself, though the story is a personal power song about inner growth and making it through the troubled years. We, as gay people, are bound to fall into such traps as we go along.

Arca is a twenty-nine year old Venezuelan non-binary artist who goes by the pronouns "she" or "it". I have decided to send her song "Reverie" as I find the lyrics of the video to relate heavily to the lack of being able to express our emotions in love and sex, which is an issue highly prevalent in the LGBTQ+ community due to the stigma that has existed in society.
The video is also rather beautiful and executes the concept of the lyrics beautifully with the "break-down" of Arca's emotional state as she goes through this experience.
I also think the video relates to a sexual experience of Arca's that triggers a "reverie" of sexual abuse for her. Many members of the LGBTQ+ community go through sexual abuse or rape whether it be from a stranger or a loved one, but are too afraid to speak up. This is an issue in our community that needs to have a light shone on it.
In Arca's home country of Venezuela, the country has a poor track-records for LGBTQ+ rights in South America, with a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage, and in Arca's case, no recognition for the right to change their legal name or gender. Whilst opinion in Venezuela is quite split, with the current crises going on in the country, there may not be much movement in rights for years to come.

DYSLEXYA
"Flamboyant"
Dorian Electra
"I’m an artist who’s trying to do something a little different with pop music. I see a really cool opportunity in pop right now where it’s a lot more open for queer and non-binary artists like me to be visible, and not just destined to be super underground."
“I think some people are sick of hearing the word ‘queer’ used as a marketing tool, but we live in a bubble where it’s normal to us. We have to realise that it’s not normal to the rest of the world yet”
Dorian Electra is genderfluid and has brought their analytical brain to bear on issues of FEMINISM, GENDER and SEXUALITY. Electra is a musical essayist, writing adrenaline-fuelled mini-theses on philosophy and feminism, laid over heart-tweaking synths and invariably accompanied by detail-soaked videos. I chose this song because I really love the message and story they are telling with their music. I am also hoping the heteronormative standard will start to fade away little by little in the upcoming years and I want to try to think more outside the box and stop labelling myself and others. I want to try to be more involved in the LGBTQ+ community myself, to have friends that are also LGBTQ+ and work on the issues that are still very common in our community! I hope the judges understand where I'm coming from and that I can stay another week! But I just want to say this season was really a great experience for me already as I got to know many of you a lot better and I feel like you all now know me better aswell! I really loved being a part of it and I LOVE the new format! thank you so much for your amazing work Daniel !
Lyrics I'm a very flaming flammable guy Some say my fire burns way too high Some say they find me too hot to touch But I, I think it's not enough Don't tell me what to do Don't tell me what to say You know I like it loud Cause that's the only way No taste for subtlety And no time for restraint No, oh, I go all the way I'm flamboyant I go all the way I'm flamboyant I go all the way Flamboyant Every day I'm flamboyant I go all the way You always see me putting on a show I entertain until it's time to go You know I like to put it on display I like to work and I like to play I've always been this way, since I was young I like to steal the show from you for fun I do it big and take up lots of space You know I like to get up in your face Don't tell me what to do Don't tell me what to say You know I like it loud Cause that's the only way No taste for subtlety And no time for restraint No, I go, I go, I go all the way I'm flamboyant I go all the way I'm flamboyant I go all the way Flamboyant Every day (Every damn day) I'm flamboyant I go all the way Turn down? I never do Turn down, turn down for what? They ask me Turn down? I never do I turn up, I turn up, turn up All the way I'm flamboyant I go all the way (All the way, baby) I go all the way I know it drives you crazy I know it drives you crazy I'm flamboyant I go all the way All the way, all the way, yeah I'm flamboyant, I go all the way Flamboyant Every day Flamboyant, baby, yeah

"SYMBOL" Adrianne Lenker
2:27+
Adrianne Lenker is an American singer-songwriter whose backstory is truly unlike any one else's. She was born into a religious cult, which was a massive burden for her growing up. Her father and mother were both musical and her father had several connections in the music industry, and as Adrianne was growing up, he tried his best to manufacture Adrianne into a popstar. He would teach her the guitar and songwriting and arrange both writing and recording sessions for her. She despised it and wanted to get away from it all.
However, due to all of this, she never went to high school and thus her only real qualification was music, and because of this she decided to form the band Big Thief, but without her father in the picture, she was able to write and record the music that she liked. There's pieces of this pain she faced growing up throughout all of her lyrics.
What there's also a lot of in her lyrics is ambiguity and fluidity in regards to both sexuality and gender. Adrianne does not like to label herself as anything, she doesn't label herself as non-binary, but also refuses to label herself as cisgender. She experiments with gender and both masculinity and femininity in both her style and her music, and when talking about love and love interests, there are rarely any notes towards the gender of whoever she may be talking about, and if there are, there's usually references to more than just one gender. If her sexuality and gender were to be assumed, we could say that she's genderfluid and pansexual, but she does not like labels and therefore refuses to call herself by them. It should also be noted that assuming someone's sexuality and gender is not necessarily the right thing to do, which is why I'm treading this lightly and only pointed it out in order to make it easier to grasp the concepts that she's putting forward.
"Symbol" is a song from her solo project, abysskiss and talks about love without boundaries, expressed through metaphors and without gender. Pieces of her rough upbringing are also present in the song's lyrics, as she talks about "the enemy", but that particular lyric could also be interpreted in other ways besides just her childhood, just as most other lyrics in this song. The meaning of the song is very open and symbolic in nature, hence also the title, "Symbol".
| LYRICS
Fly make flea, make haste, make waste, eight makes infinity Times I've tried to make breaks, embrace for the enemy Meet my face to face, time try to find the diamond Counting time as time counts me, the river to the island
Do you not, do you not tell? That smile always makes me well Do you see circling through? That's how one returns from two
Fly make flea, make haste, make taste, eight makes infinity Times I've tried to make breaks, embrace for the enemy Meet my face to face, time try to find the diamond Counting time as time counts me, the river to the island
Do you not, do you not tell? That smile always makes me well Do you see circling through? That's how one returns from two
The symbol of your love is time The symbol of your love is time
Do you not, do you not tell? That smile always makes me well Do you see circling through? That's how one returns from two Do you not, do you not tell? That smile always makes me well Do you see circling through? That's how one returns from two

Shura • "religion (u can lay your hands on me)"Recap slot: 2:10+
Shura is a 28yo British electro-pop artist with Russian roots and has been releasing music since 2014. She came out as lesbian in 2015 and has been open about her sexuality ever since, for example by including lesbian storylines in her music videos and lyrics, such as "Touch" or "What's It Gonna Be?". This particular entry I chose is her latest single and will also appear on her upcoming second studio album, "Forevher". Both the lyrics and video are clearly inspired by lesbian love and intimacy but they also include religious symbols, as the name suggests. What I like about the song and about her is her minimalistic style. The song isn't pompous or over the top, it's a bop made of few ingredients and yet it manages to paint a strong image. The lyrics are cheeky with enjoyably clever metaphors but still somehow sweet and innocent. Generally the song is definitely intimate but not dirty or nasty and in my opinion the sound of it is infectious and makes me want to tap my toes.
Lyrics:
It's human It's our religion No preacher to teach us to love Two bodies One vision No one's watching over us
We've been talking on the telephone for hours at night Whilst I've been thinking about kissing you I wanna consecrate your body Turn the water to wine I know you're thinking about kissing too
Oh girl, don't stop, please You can lay your hands on me Oh girl, don't stop, please You can lay your hands on me Oh girl You can lay your hands on me
It could be LA It could be Heaven If you're an Angel, can I be your God? You in all your glory It's not confession Baby don't apologize
We've been talking on the telephone for hours at night Whilst I've been thinking about kissing you I wanna consecrate your body Turn the water to wine I know you're thinking about kissing too
Oh girl, don't stop, please You can lay your hands on me Oh girl, don't stop, please You can lay your hands on me Oh girl You can lay your hands on me You can lay your hands on me
We've been talking on the telephone for hours at night Whilst I've been thinking about kissing you I wanna consecrate your body Turn the water to wine I know you're thinking about kissing too
Oh girl, don't stop please You can lay your hands on me Oh girl, don't stop please You can lay your hands on me Oh girl You can lay your hands on me You can lay your hands on me

On Kelela as a queer, black artist:
www.dazeddigital.com/music/article/37763/1/kelela-on-the-joy-and-pain-of-being-a-black-queer-musician Lyrics
Look, I'll give up right away And you'll never figure out What you said, but it's cool, baby I'ma get me another round
Saw your face in my lane Fall in love everyday You can chase it for the night There's a place for you and I
Let me know It ain't that deep, either way Let me know Said I gotta go, don't wanna hear me say Let me know It ain't that deep, either way No one's tryna settle down All you gotta do is let me know
All you gotta do is let me know Let me know All you gotta do is let me know Let me know All you gotta do is let me know No one's tryna settle down All you gotta do is let me know
You don't read between the lines 'Bout to leave, can you read my mind? Did you think you're my ride home, baby? 'Cause my girls are parked behind
Saw your face in my lane Fall in love everyday You can chase it for the night There's a place for you and I
Let me know It ain't that deep, either way Let me know Said I gotta go, don't wanna hear me say Let me know It ain't that deep, either way No one's tryna settle down All you gotta do is let me know
All you gotta do is let me know Just let me know All you gotta do is let me know Just let me know All you gotta do is let me know No one's tryna settle down All you gotta do is let me know
I saw your eyes fall right past my waist, so let me know I ain't gonna wait if you hesitate, so let me know I don't wait for nothin', baby I ain't getting nowhere movin' at your pace, so let me know I don't wait for nothin', baby All you gotta do is let me know Let me know, just let me know
All you gotta do is let me know Just let me know All you gotta do is let me know No one's tryna settle down All you gotta do is let me know Just let me know All you gotta do is let me know It ain't that deep, baby All you gotta do is let me know All you gotta do is let me know Let me know
