Shovkovskyi/Peter Wow, I'm speechless, beautiful explanation and comparisons You now know more about my own stats than myself I tried my best No one can remember everything, so it's good that there are those wiki pages, which you can take a look at any time you want This also describes my way of teaching things - I don't force kids to remember everything about specific topics, because there's so much information nowadays that you can't possibly remember everything. Nowadays you need to know, where and how to find information more than to know it like a poem. That's my teaching style. Obviously I can't do that in every subject I'm qualified to teach, but those subjects that don't have national exams at the end are the one's I can do as I wish.

More teachers like you please and thanks To take less space I'll use spoiler... Generations are changing, but the system isn't. It's not like there aren't teachers like this (for example, all 3 of us that graduated this year from this program and some people from earlier years Iknow are all pretty much like this). Young teachers are mostly like this, because they've recently been in the same position as their pupils/students, and they are closer to X, Y Z and following generations than the old teachers. Plus, old teachers usually aren't willing to change what has worked for them for their whole career. For example, when I was in school I didn't mind if there was a lot of information to "swallow", but it had to be somehow entertaining, other wise I didn't remember much. When you're in university, then lecture type of lessons (where teachers speaks and everyone just listens) obviously will be most of the time, although even that is slowly changing a bit. But in university it's understandable, because you have to know a lot to become a professional in whichever way you choose. But if you don't plan to go to university and go and find any work you can right after highschool, then there's no point for teachers to bother those stundents with heap of information. This is where it goes wrong, because teachers are spending a lot of time and energy to get something out of those students (although they lose 99% of the time), which means a lot of time has been wasted instead of teaching those who want to learn. That's how it work with those old methods that are still used most of the time. But once you've had a few lessons with different methods that also "force" students to participate, they soon realize that it works like charm. For example, my thesis was more about how and if the old methods still work (that was obviously just an experiment and I wouldn't teach like that), while one of my fellow students did a thesis about active methods in history lessons. I don't even need to tell you, which one got better results not only in terms of marks, but also in the way how active and open minded to new things were these students. At first there's always someone who whines, but it doesn't last long, once he gets involved and sees that it's actually a lot of fun, even if you have to work with big amount of information. I don't know how it's in other countries, but in Latvia most of the teachers are now with few years left until their retirement, which means they will stay in school until they reach that age, so that they don't have to worry about where they will get money to live of (unfortunately the wages aren't anything like they should be for teachers here). That's also one of the reasons not many young people decide to become teachers. All this situation will create a crisis (probably in the next 5-10 years), where the old teachers will be in retirement, but there won't be enough young people to replace them. And it's all only because they can't get to work in schools right after university, so they choose a different career and later aren't very interested in returning to be teachers. Sadly our government still doesn't see this huge problem, although teachers have warned them for at least the last 10 years. So who knows how it's gonna pan out. P.S. Sorry for this long #offtopic

Can we please stop this discussion here? If you want to react further, you can do so in the off-topic thread, as I don’t really see how those latest posts relate to this Retro edition.
