"LA VIE EN ROSE" Édith Piaf
2:19+
Édith Piaf was a legendary French singer, songwriter, cabaret performer and film actress noted as France's national chanteuse and one of the country's most widely known international stars. Her music was often autobiographical and she specialized in chanson and torch ballads about love, loss and sorrow.
"La Vie en rose" is considered to be her signature song and was written in 1945, popularised in 1946 and then released as a single in 1947, after which it became an international hit. There have since been countless cover versions of the song by both well-known and underground artists alike.
| LYRICS
Lalalalalala Lalalalalala Lalalala

Yma Sumac • "Malambo No. 1"Released in 1954Recap slot: 1:21+
Yma Sumac is a Peruvian singer who lived from 1923 to 2008. She was most known for her wide vocal range, with different reports stating that her range was somewhere between 4,5 and 6,5 octaves. Her genres were mainly mambo and exotica, with this particular song being released on her 1954 album "Mambo!". I already expected this challenge to appear during All Stars and "prepared" for it back then and I think this song is the best choice for the challenge based on various criteria. First of all the song stands out in the pre-60s era, most popular songs were sort of boring in my opinion and many were ballads. This song however is a major bop, it's loud, it's exotic and it showcases her outstandingly talented vocals. Yma has several interesting and good songs but to me this is the best one. After being criticised last week for not standing out enough, I think this is a good way to not let that happen again. I also would expect most people to have a rather mainstream approach and send something from a western country instead of going for mambo from Peru, which is also why I decided to send it. Obviously it might be a risky choice, I don't expect this kind of music to be appreciated by everyone, but I decided to take the risk anyway because in my view the song slaps, not just in a comedic way, as I unironically stan it.

DYSLEXYA
"Jailhouse Rock"
Elvis Presley I chose this song as it is one of Elvis his most known and iconic songs! I know chosing Elvis could be risky but I hope I can stand out by selecting a male singer with a great song for it’s era! It’s still just a bop that I want to dance along to everytime I hear it! I hope the judges can see this and that this week could be my redemption (finally) but once again I’m very grateful to still be here and enjoy this amazing thing one week more! And also I’m a record holder bitches bye Lyra xoxo (joking see you on All Stars gurl )

Marilyn Monroe - "Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend"
3:40+
Lyrics:
The French are glad to die for love They delight in fighting duels
But I prefer a man who lives
And gives expensive jewels
A kiss on the hand may be quite continental
But diamonds are a girl's best friend
A kiss may be grand but it won't pay the rental
On your humble flat, or help you at the automat
Men grow cold as girls grow old
And we all lose our charms in the end
But square cut or pear shaped
These rocks don't lose their shape
Diamonds are a girl's best friend
Tiffany's, Cartier, Blackstar, Frost, Ghoram
Talk to me, Harry, Winston, tell me all about it
There may come a time when a lass needs a lawyer
But diamonds are a girl's best friend
There may come a time when a hard boiled employer
Thinks your awful nice But get that ice or else no dice
He's your guy when stocks are high
But beware when they start to descend
It's then that those louses go back to their spouses
Diamonds are a girl's best friend I've heard of affairs that are strictly platonic
But diamonds are a girl's best friend And I think affairs that you must keep Masonic Are better bets if little pets get big baguettes
Time rolls on and youth is gone And you can't straighten up when you bend
But stiff back or stiff knees
You stand straight at Tiffany's
Diamonds
Diamonds
I don't mean rhinestones
But Diamonds
Are A Girl's Best
Best friend

WEEK ELEVEN Theme: Send a song that was published before 1960.
COME RAIN OR COME SHINE by Judy Garland ANTIQUE REALNESS Timeslot Audio 3:12+ Timeslot Video 2:56+ (youtube.com/watch?v=WrVQm5heUrc) DESCRIPTION Judy Garland has shaped the first half of this century for the better, not just as one of the original gay icons and legends but also for the music and film industry as a whole. During a career that spanned 45 (out of her 47) years, she attained international stardom as an actress in both musical and dramatic roles, as a recording artist, and on the concert stage. Though she is often best remembered for her portrayal of Dorothy Gale in 'The Wizard of Oz' in 1939 and subsequently, "Over The Rainbow" becoming her signature song, for this challenge, I went with a less obvious route while still presenting you with the intensity of her artistic range. I guess when you met me It was just one of those things But don't ever buck me 'Cause I'm gonna be true if you let me "Come Rain or Come Shine" was written for the musical St. Louis Woman, which opened on March 30, 1946. The version above was recorded in the year 1956 by Judy Garland and soon became one of her staple songs, for no less than her remarkable and emotionally liberating vocals. The studio version actually doesn't do it full justice, and there's an intense version which was (sadly, for this challenge) performed in 1961, touching on the thrilling excitement of the song just a tad bit more. I'm gonna love you, I'm gonna love you I'm gonna love you come rain or come shine! On interpreting the song, it is an energetic love ballad. Judy Garland declares her undying love for a person, no matter if the days are bad (rain) or good (shine) for the couple or them as individuals. She also touches on the affect on her through undying, unconditional and almost idolatrous love. There's a sense of true liberty listening to the song, yet also, it can be quite hideous, implying there's something behind the scenes we, as the audience, aren't allowed to see directly, yet you feel the rhetorical question looming over you indirectly: Would you leave your partner if you were unhappy in the relationship?Happy together Un-happy together Won't that be fine? The song directly corresponds with the challenges of the queer community, who declared Judy Garland one of their most beloved icons in retrospective and back when she was alive. There's no coincidence that this song served as one of the most memorable lip-sync performance songs on RuPaul's Drag Race, after all.
