Chilean Entry Chile is a country that's been through & is being through quite a lot, and although we move forward, we've never what happened in the past of our country, that's maybe why we are not what you would expect from a Latin American country. For this theme, I wanted to choose something that meant something to Chileans & had deep connections with me, and the chosen one is. Violeta Parra (1917 -1967) - "Volver A Los 17" (Go Back To 17)Timeslot: +2:05 You may use the same picture
This song was published in November 1966, one year before Violeta's suicide. In this song, Violeta sings in a nostalgic way about her wish of going back to those times of youth. Although many people associate this song with youth, during the dictatorship many people used this song as a cry of hope to go back to the time when everything was better and people didn't disappear or weren't murdered, which also is what Chileans want nowadays in regards of what's happening in Chile today. In a personal side, this song has always reminded me of my Grandmother, she's one of the oldest in my Mother's family, although she is still young, she's always saying she's next one in the reaper's list and is always telling her teen stories nostalgically, which I always laugh so hard because they're so damn funny. Translation:Volver a los diecisiete (Go back to seventeen) Después de vivir un siglo (After a century of living) Es como descifrar signos (it's like deciphering signs) Sin ser sabio competente. (Without being a competent wise) Volver a ser de repente (To be all of a sudden) Tan frágil como un segundo, (As fragile as a second9) Volver a sentir profundo (To feel deeply again) Como un niño frente a Dios, (Like a child in front of God) Eso es lo que siento yo (That's what i fell) En este instante fecundo. (In this fecund instant)
Se va enredando, enredando, (It is entangling, entangling) Como en el muro la hiedra, (Like the ivy on the wall) Y va brotando, brotando, (And it is sprouting, sprouting) Como el musguito en la piedra, (Like tiny moss on stone) Ay, sí sí sí. (Oh yes, yes, yes)
Mi paso retrocedido, (My steps back) Cuando el de ustedes avanza; (While yours keep advancing) El arco de las alianzas (The arc of alliances) Ha penetrado en mi nido (Has penetrated my nest) Con todo su colorido, (With all of its coloring) Se ha paseado por mis venas (It has walked through my veins) y hasta las duras cadenas (And even the hard chains) Con que nos ata el destino (With which destiy ties us) Es como un diamante fino (It's like a fine diamond) Que alumbra mi alma serena. (That lightens my serene soul)
Lo que puede el sentimiento (What the feeling can do) No lo ha podido el saber, (Knowledge couldn't have done) Ni el más claro proceder (not even the clearest move) Ni el más ancho pensamiento. (Nor the widest thought) Todo lo cambia el momento (The moment changes everything) Cual mago condescendiente, (In which the condescending magician) Nos aleja dulcemente (Separates us sweetly) De rencores y violencia: (From rancor & violence) Solo el amor con su ciencia (Only love with its science) Nos vuelve tan inocentes. (Makes us so innocent)
El amor es torbellino (Love is a whirlwind) De pureza original; (Of original purity) Hasta el feroz animal (Even the fierce animal) Susurra su dulce trino, (Whispers its sweet trill) detiene a los peregrinos, (Stops the pilgrims) Libera a los prisioneros; (And liberates the prisoners) El amor con sus esmeros (Love with its best efforts) Al viejo lo vuelve niño (Turns the old into a child) Y al malo solo el cariño (And to the bad only affection) Lo vuelve puro y sincero. (Can makes it pure & sincere)
De par en par la ventana (The Fully open window) Se abrió como por encanto, (It opened as if by enchanment) Entró el amor con su manto (Love entered with its mantle) Como una tibia mañana; (Like a lukewarm morning) Al son de su bella diana (To the melody of its Diana) Hizo brotar el jazmín, (Made the jasmine sprout) Volando cual serafín, (Flying like a seraphim) Al cielo le puso aretes (Placed rings in the sky) Y mis años en diecisiete (And my years in seventeen) los convirtió el querubín. (Cherub did turn them)
Last time i didn't have that much luck with Violeta, let's see if this time around you like this one better, and really hope you do so, 'cause this one of favourites of all time. Anyways, Hope you like it

Austria Falco - "Out Of The Dark"Timeslot: 2:07+
Why I find this song meaningful: Falco was perhaps the most successful Austrian singer, had international hits: For example his song "Rock Me Amadeus" reached the number 1 position in the US Billboard Charts as first and until today only song in German language. Generally he influenced the Austrian music industry a lot and until today he remains a legend. Unfortunately he died in 1998 in a car accident, way too early. The above song, "Out of the Dark", was released shortly after his death and was one of his last releases where he was actively involved. It became a success in the German language area and remained in the charts for long. Due to that I consider this song very meaningful for the Austrian music scene, as it's connected with the tragic death of one of our most famous artists.

from 3.21 >>>
One of the country's favorite musicians, whose songs I grew up with... Unfortunately we all lost it in 2015.
Andriy "Kuzma" Kuzmenko (17 August 1968 – 2 February 2015) was a Ukrainian singer, poet, writer, TV presenter, producer and actor.
He was best known as the lead singer of the Ukrainian rock band Skryabin, founded in 1989. He died in a traffic collision...
