WEEK 3 HOPE THE CROSS FITS | |
Pagan Song Feuer Faun (2:21+)
The german band Faun is known for its Pagan style music. Their medieval style of music, singing and their dresses and music videos make them seem like an authentic medieval folk group. "Feuer" (Fire) is about releasing an inner fire and becoming a fighter for freedom, love and friendship.
Since we stand for versality, Poppy and I wanted a total contrast in our songs. Opposed to the epic, medieval sounding pagan music of Faun, we chose a modern, Soul and RnB Pop song by British singer JNR Williams with a strong Christian theme. The singer has created a song out of a prayer to god for a better life.
I know that you doubt me You can't hide what settles in your eyes The worry in your heartbeat I hear it when I hold you in the night
But I know that faith will just guide us Through harder hurricanes Swim through the tidal waves 'Cause quietly I pray
Father, can you see me? You know I won't let go Please give her everything she needs I'll give you every part of me Father, can you see me? You know I won't let go Please give her everything she needs
So we can live like those rich kids The ones with the biggest house We can live like those rich kids Never will we do without
When you lay there shaking You're making sure I know what you're not saying I'm here, close to breaking It's hard for me as it is for you But you only get through hell by moving
But I know that faith will just guide us Through harder hurricanes Swim through the tidal waves 'Cause quietly I pray
Father, can you see me? You know I won't let go Please give her everything she needs I'll give you every part of me Father, can you see me? You know I won't let go Please give her everything she needs
So we can live like those rich kids The ones with the biggest house We can live like those rich kids Never will we do without So we can live like those rich kids The ones with the biggest house We can live like those rich kids Never will we do without
So we can, we can live So we can, we can live So we can, we can live So we can, we can live |

The two songs we present tell two different stories: one is about a goddess, the other about a broken man. Both stories involve prayer and will. "Shame"
by Andy Mineo ft Josh Garrels Week 2: Hope the cross fits (Christian) Genna Cide
3:44+
For the selection of a Christian song, we want to focus on finding the quintessential, almost cliché Christian song: a gospel choir, an uplifting tone, and key words such as “God,” “Jesus,” and “sin.”
This song starts off somber, singing/rapping about a self-hating man who feels worthless and not accepted, hiding behind “these apps [that] distract me.” He tells of his destructive addiction to porn and how it affects his impression on women. It bothers him that he knows it’s wrong but keeps doing this bad decision. However, he came to a point that he sees a light to follow, and becoming a Christian has put his moral compass in the right direction. The climax of the song is a release of all that negativity and a renewal of one’s self thanks to Jesus washing away his sins.
[Josh Garrels:] You fly in circles around my head While I sit on the edge of my bed I cry, oh what have I done again? 'Cause I'm 'bout to hate who I am 'Cause I'm 'bout to hate who I am
[Andy Mineo:] I chase the moment that when I had it I felt alive But now that the thrill is gone I feel dead inside I feel like everyone know the secrets I wanna hide And everytime they ask me how I'm doing I just say I'm fine Too embarrassed to share it or maybe too much pride I create my own prison, holding the keys inside Punishing myself for all of these crimes And I'm trying to convince God I'm not a waste of his time What's wrong with me? Am I defective? I keep on making a mess Why can't I ever get it together? Soon, people gonna find out I'm not what they expected They see who I really am then I end up rejected I try to stand tall but these knees are collapsing Instead of asking for help these apps distract me So lonely, but so many people friended me While I post, I hope one day to be happy as I pretend to be
[Josh Garrels:] You fly in circles around my head While I sit on the edge of my bed I cry, oh what have I done again? 'Cause I'm 'bout to hate who I am 'Cause I'm 'bout to hate who I am
[Andy Mineo:] Uh, I was thirteen the first time my momma caught me watching porn She started screaming, she couldn't believe her last born Was dappling in something so destructive I wish I could have said it was my last time but naw it wasn't And the more I thought about it The more I got bothered These women I'm objectifying are somebody's daughters I really never thought I had a problem until it followed me to college And I felt debilitated by it's bondage Became a Christian, heard about God's power Couldn't see it in my life but I could tell you all about it Overloaded with knowledge, making so little progress Became a public figure but my struggles were in private Only started tasting freedom when I'm being honest And I learn that when I am weak is when I'm seeing God the strongest I know some people gon' be quick to throw stones But I'll take all of those hits to know that you're not alone And after 28 years of life I decided Everybody's crooked, some just have a better way of hiding it Oh how good does freedom taste I hope they gon' give me the forgiveness they gon need one day I pray
[Josh Garrels:] Jesus He washes away of all my sin Washes away all my sin Jesus washes away all of my sin Jesus He washes away of all of my sin Washes away all my sin Jesus washes away all of my sin Jesus He washes away of all my sin Washes away all my sin Jesus washes away all of my sin Jesus He washes away of all my sin Washes away all my sin Jesus washes away all of my sin Jesus He washes away of all my sin Washes away all my sin Jesus washes away all of my sin Jesus He washes away of all my sin Washes away all my sin Jesus washes away all of my sin
[Choir & Andy Mineo:] Oh oh oh Oh oh oh Oh oh oh Oh oh oh He washes away all of my sin (oh) He washes away all of my sin (oh) He washes away all of my sin (oh) He washes away all of my sin (oh) He washes away all of my sin (oh) He washes away all of my sin (oh) He washes away all of my sin (oh) He washes away all of my sin (oh) Oh oh oh
| "Wake Skadi"
by Hagalaz' Runedance Week 3: Hope the cross fits (Pagan) Slasher Sasha
2:41+
Paganism has ancient roots that pre-date modern-day religion. It’s full of fantasy. These unconventional concepts are what Christians find blasphemous. “Wake Skadi” is a pagan song which fulfills that concept.
The narrative behind this entry is appropriate. Winter is soon approaching, so we must pay tribute to the winter goddess herself. We pay tribute to Skadi, the Norse goddess of winter and hunting, worshipped in the polytheistic Norse paganism. “Wake Skadi” is an epic percussion-led experience which describes and idolizes the goddess. Her amazing attributes inspire her followers to pray for Skadi to give them strength and courage as the harsh season approaches. The instrumental evokes the archaic nature of this deity worshipped in ancient times.
In the winter mountains high, Where avalanches roar and frozen lakes sigh The sough of the wind to hear The howl of the wolves sweet tune to her ear Wake Skadi, come patroness Guide me through your crystal woods
Silvery goddess of the snow, Your shining beauty melts the cold Dress me in your white shawl Kindle my fierce passions Wake Skadi, proud northern giantess I invoke your strength
Mistress of the hunt, Raise the spirit of freedom Led your sisters into the chase, Arouse their untamed nature Wake Skadi; light the flames of courage, Wake your sisters' will to fight
Sister of wolves, Seek your companions You heard the call of the wild I summon your instinct Wake Skadi, defend your kind Guard them from the hateful hand of the blind

Fondall With The Dyke This week we have been assigned together to present a diverse showing in music between two distinct theologies. Pagan (Fondall Kats)Wardruna – Raido 3:32 Pagan music is both a representation of the lyrical ideology as well as the clear folk sound. Raido perfectly encompasses both sounds. “Raido”, as well as the rest of the album, centres around the Norse myth of Ragnarök. The song is a powerful and dark song, with layers that are rife with emotion and energy, yet thunder at the same time. “Raido” has a basis within Norse mythology, which stems from the Norse paganism belief. The lyrics talk about a horse named Raido. Horses play an important role in Old Norse history. You are clearly able to notice the significance of paganism as a musical component as well with instruments such as the Tagelharpa, rebec, lure, and goat horns playing the prominent part throughout. Here is the song in the original Norwegian language, as well as translated lyrics into English and Spanish. www.musixmatch.com/lyrics/Wardruna/Raido/translation/englishhere i would copy + paste the English translation but it's not letting me copy so pls if you have any doubts over its paganness follow the linkChristian (Donna the Dyke)Francisca Valenzuela – Catedral 1:36 90% of people from Latin America and the Caribbean identify as Christian, in fact, it’s the region where Christianity thrives the most. This is why we have decided to take a slightly different approach to the challenge by sending “Catedral”. Francisca describes the song as being an “apology to the body, and how to shake off the insecurities, fears and guilt of the baggage that religious institutional tradition” provides for society. I don’t believe in good I don’t believe in badThe organisation of many denominations under Christianity have been known for views that are not compatible with the modern day. With covering up mass sexual and emotional abuse of children spanning over a history of centuries. “Catedral” perfectly addresses the discontent that many people currently have with the institution of Christianity. I don’t apologise for what’s real In my cathedralIt also provides a more alternative sound to the stereotypical usage of “Christian” instruments such as the organ, which truly amplifies the message of the song as a reflection of the history of the church. At the end of the song, the lyrics “I adapt and learn” send out a message of hope for there to be true structural change. HMH as a contest is asking for us to show glamour, horror and filth. With the messaging of the song, it's clear that despite the melody, the lyrics speak from a place of horror and contempt. Spanish genius.com/Francisca-valenzuela-catedral-lyricsI don't believe in good I don't believe in bad I believe in what exists Although a lot is missing
There is no miracle There is no saint There is only body and mind To give
I don't apologize for what's real
In my cathedral In my cathedral Sacred body Perfect apparatus I adapt and learn My electric body
I confuse myself With so much guilt I don't know why it hits me It doesn't go away
I don't apologize for what's real

eivør pálsdóttir - heyr himna smiður (0:58+)
Heyr himna Smiður is one of the most iconic hymns in icelandic religious history. It was written by Kolbeinn Tumason in 1207-1208 before his head was bashed in with a rock. The song accompanying the psalm was written 700 after Kolbeins death by a priest, and then sung by the faroese legend, Eivør.
"Hear, smith of heavens. The poet seeketh. In thy still small voice Mayest thou show grace. As I call on thee, Thou my creator. I am thy servant, Thou art my true Lord."

koryn hawthorne - speak the name (0:51+)
a huge contrast between the two is noticeable - and the christian song is primarily focusing on the soul and the spirit.
koryn hawthorne is a young RnB gospel artist which is notorious for bringing depth and soul into contemporary christian music. her song "speak the name" focuses on just that: her love and devotion for Jesus, the "name above all other names" as she says it.
"Speak the Name The Name above all other names Speak the Name The Name the wind and waves obey All of heaven's coming down Fill the earth with a sound Of the Name The Name of Jesus."

PAGANISM:
L'Ham De Foc - "Lluna D'Algeps" 3:43+

| "Lluna d'algeps" is a diversion from the pagan songs sent by other teams - we've decided not to stay within the Nordic-Germanic realm. The song itself sounds very pagan, using instrumentation that was common during Sephardic times - a time where paganism was allowed to roam free.
The song is a ballad about a failing relationship that uses nature - a key aspect of paganism - not only as a metaphor for disintegration "I waited here...the violets slowly use their petals" but also to connect nature with spirit. In many pagan religions, nature is associated with being a signal for fortune and prosperity, or the lack thereof. You can see how the natural processes accompany the deterioration of the relationship. It is important to recognise that not all pagan songs are worshipping their deities but they also deal with the aspects and morals surrounding them, which is exactly what this song does. | "T'Ai Giorkou" is a Cypriot traditional song that narrates a version of St. George's legend, one of the most important Saints in Cypriot history. According to the legend, a dragon cuts off Cyprus' water supply, asking to eat one kid by each family in order to give the water back. When it was the king's turn to send his daughter, St. George was godsent and slaughtered the dragon, asking for the corpse to be taken to the people in order to make them believe in God. St. George accepted no reward for his actions, but he demanded that a church is built to his name and for his memorial day to be celebrated on the 23rd of April.
We believe that the song's content combined with its Byzantine sound makes it perfectly suitable for the challenge. |
