| Michael Kiwanuka is an indie-rock and folk singer from London that has made a name for himself by traking traditionally black sounds and modernizing them for a new generation. "Black Man In A White World" is a song that actually was written following his first tour in 2014, in which he noticed that a large majority of his fans were white. He grew up in White Middle Class England, and he said that the fact that black people were not attending his shoes made him realize "that we are still more segregated than we think." The song specifically focuses on bringing classical soul and jazz found in America throughout the first half the 20th century into the 21st century. He knows that specific types of music are consumed by different types of people, and he hopes that this song can be a gateway for his (mostly White) fanbase to be introduced to the classic jazz stylings he is inspired by. lyrics:

Sampa Tembo, known professionally as Sampa the Great, is a Zambian songwriter, rapper raised in Botswana, currently based in Australia. She was based in Sydney from 2014 to 2018, originally coming to Australia to pursue a degree in audio production at the SAE Institute. "BLUE LIGHTS" by Jorja Smith Song About Racial Issues

When I wrote “Blue Lights,” I took a break from doing my media course work. I was looking at post-colonialism in grime music. A video I was watching was Dizzee Rascal’s “Sirens.” I was inspired to write this song. I was listening to some beat in my room, and I found this one, called “Jamie Keys” produced by Joyce. That’s who produced “Blue Lights.” I just started free styling it. Also I wrote this song because I was talking to loads of young kids. Part of my coursework was to do a little documentary, and I was looking at police versus grime music. I just went around interviewing kids at school asking them what they thought of the police. These little boys, mostly it was black kids that I was interviewing, people of color. Well everyone, but that was the main focus.
These 11-year-olds, I was like, “Oh, what do you think of the police?” They were like, “Fuck the police! I hate them.” And I was like, “What have you done?” “Nothing, but I hate them,” And I was like, “It’s sad,” you know?It’s sad because we’re kind of … It’s instilled in us to have, well fear the police. You know? That’s what I was writing the song about. And it was about walking around with this guilty conscience, even though you haven’t done anything wrong.

In this song, Jorja keeps referring to "blue lights", which in my interpretation, is the police. Despite the main focus of the song not being about racial issues in general, I feel like both the music video and certain lines in the lyrics show that it can be interpreted as someone who's giving advice to their friend that will get arrested by the police soon, and that it won't be a surprise because we all know, cops are trash, and they almost never treat all people of color equally. The police is arriving, but we have no idea if Jorja is involved, this is not important, she would rather the lights be strobe lights from a party or a rave, or possibly a festival – Christmas or Bonfire Night.
Flashing blue lights on the street look beautiful. All UK road signs are fitted with retroreflective coating which is especially reactive to blue LED lights. When the blues are on in a particularly built up area, the level of illumination and reflection is awesome, in the truest sense of the word.

Jorja refers to the music the character in the song as “poison” as the first four lines suggest he is filling his ears with the very things that would have someone running from the cops (gun crime, drugs, violence, etc.)

Racial issues have left huge marks in U.S. history. One of the most unsettling topics has been the lynchings of innocent African-American men, who make up the majority of victims. Much of these acts occurred in the Southern USA as a form of race-based violence and to reinforce white supremacy. Photographs have recorded these terrible events (you can see some in Wikipedia). Most of the lynchings occurred during the late 19th to early 20th century, but continued infrequently into 1950's.
I want to send a song that has left an impact in history, and one that actually addresses a real racial issue. "Strange Fruit" was originally published in 1937 as a poem. Metaphorically, the victims are the strange fruit mentioned.
Andra Day respectfully covers the song originally sung by Billie Holiday in 1939. Whereas in the past, the song protested lynching itself, today, she addresses the lack of memorials held for the innocent victims. The music video shows various actual locations that the lynchings have occurred. It's in this form that the victims become memorialized. Andra Day's melancholy vocals and the haunting, somber atmosphere brings out the vivid imagery of the lyrics.

Let's show the beauty of Africa and its people. The other songs I'm sharing are very dark and serious. I want this to be light and exciting as a contrast.
Shanky was born in Zimbabwe and moved to the UK at age 13. Her style of music is primarily Afrobeat and Afrodance, very much in touch with her African roots, and it shows well in this song. "Suduruka" is upbeat and light-hearted. It very much carries the sounds of Africa both in the beat and in the lyrics.
As an artist from Sub-Saharan Africa, Shanky is showing her African pride with this amazing bop.

Thed Jewel is a Los Angeles-based rapper. Rap is Jewel's platform to help people, especially in the homophobic and sexist rap industry, to come to an understanding of equal treatment.
His debut track "Fuschia" is a song about himself and his understanding of how society views his type of people. He prominently addresses two colors: black and fuchsia. Black is about his race and the stereotypes he addresses with. Fuchsia addresses his sexuality as a gay man. One of the most profound parts of the song is at the end. His last line brings out the two words associated with being gay (f*gg*t) and black (n*gg*).
The song also samples an old song originally sang in prisons, which you can hear prominently after the song's drops. He himself knows this sound of "black men in prison joined in song."
