| LYRICS
[Verse 1]
Self-deception illuminates my face
I'm subject to ridicule
Delight in exposure every time but now
I’m drifting away
[Chorus]
What do you like in me?
I wanna see what you see
What do you like in me?
Ooh-oh
[Verse 2]
A world of hurt once
What can it seem to hear?
But nothing is forever
[Chorus]
What do you like in me?
I wanna see what you see
What do you like in me?
What do you like in me?
I wanna see what you see
What do you like in me?
[Outro]
I don't know what you want
I don't know what to say
I don’t know what you want
It's driving me insane
I don't know what you want
I don't know what to say
I don't know what you want
It's driving me insane
I don't know what you want
I don't know what to say
I don’t know what you want
It’s driving me insane
I don't know what you want
I don’t know what to say
I don't know what you want
It's driving me insane

SHIVA KINDETT EPISODE 1 • Pick Your Poison
Artificial Intelligence
Layl Zahed Sultan 2:15+
As described by Zahed Sultan: Recorded during the Covid-19 lockdown in London, "Layl" is a reimagination of a famous Lebanese disco song from the 70's by the Bendaly Family "Do You Love Me." In this song, Zahed Sultan reframes the original version as a contemporary cinematic piece; placing it in a more melancholic and sombre space. With spiraling vocals, deep synths, and rich violin textures, he gives greater meaning to the song by expanding on its themes of love and loss; particularly fitting in light of the tragic explosion in Beirut and the crippling of its creative community.
I think this song fits both the challenge and the overall vibe of HMH perfectly. Zahed's voice is robotic sounding, with several perfections (or for the natural ear imperfections) that sound like glitches but are actually instant octave changes. The way he interprets the original song by repeating words and lines also gives it that "made-by-machine" sound.
The whole "artificial" sound is opposed by the almost calm and very dark string instrumental. It gives off very mysterious and almost scary, yet majestic sounds. To mix these two elements is crazy, but so is HMH x
Lyrics
Oh ya layl Ya layli layl Oh ya layl Ya layli layl Oh
You know, my baby You know, you know You know My baby I don't want to be young I don't want I don't want to be young I don't want to be strong I don't
Thinking about the guys Make only troubles They know What they are doing They know What they are doing
I don't want Ya layli
Do you, do you, do you Do you love me? Do you, do you, do you Do you need me? Do you, do you, do you Do you want me? Do, do you? Do, do you? D-d-d-do you Do you want me? Do you need me? Do, do you? Do, do you?
Do you love me?
Do you need me?
Do you want me?
Do, do you?
Do, do you? Do, do you?

WEEK 1: PICK YOUR POISON
Lila Fadista Fado Bicha
Wearing a long black wig, fishnet stockings and a miniskirt, "Lila Fadista" wafts a fan in front of his beard as he sings about the gay community's pain and revolt in lyrics not heard before in fado, Portugal's traditional style of folk song.
Tiago Lila, his real name, is performing alongside band mate Joao Cacador, who also breaks fado tradition by strumming an electric guitar rather than a 12-string acoustic one. Hiding under a large felt hat, only Cacador's leopard print trousers and stiletto shoes are plainly in view. Together, the duo makes up the band "Fado Bicha", which translates from Portuguese as "Fado Queer". The melancholy genre of fado about the struggles of daily life, sung in soulful tones, was born on the margins of Portuguese society at the end of the 18th century.
Rather than sticking to classic fado themes of general malaise, the pair, who are themselves both gay, take the traditional style but turn the lyrics to LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex) stories. Fado Bicha's style of fado is a truer form than classic fado, he said, describing the duo's as roaming, of the street and a "fado of the forgotten".
The theme assigned to me this week was to send a song "by an LGBTQIA+ artist". I feel like my choice fulfills that challenge completely, and has that unique factor. I instantly connected to the song the second I heard it, and I'm sure that you will too.
LYRICS (translated to English)
Lila Fadista, queer activist, says the tradition It is, in this Lisbon, figurehead of our song Bizarre figure that, at the sound of the guitar, fado lived He exchanged loves but his values never sold them
O Lila Fadista, your beautiful story Time recorded in our memory O Lila Fadista, your voice echoes On bairristian, bohemian, fadista nights From our Lisbon
Lipstick and perfume hide the complaint and the smell of loneliness With loud fag, who fears and loves fever and lust Slipper on the feet, an air of scum in the way of walking If Lila passed by, Lisbon would stop to hear her sing Alas, Lila Fadista, without a net or a clue, roaring a lion Don't ask for praise and stir up the colors of your heart

WEEK 1: PICK YOUR POISON
Antilopa Tita (TBA)
The Pokémon I chose to use is Virizion, an antelope-like dual-type Grass/Fighting Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation V.
"Antilopa" is a song based on the term antelope which is used to refer to many species of even-toed ruminant indigenous to various regions in Africa and Eurasia. Tita's lyrics depict Virizion's idiosyncrasy perfectly because while the lyrics glorify it's traits and it's strategy it also shows it's weakness. Just like Virizion, every Pokémon has also a weak side.
The theme assigned to me this week was to send a song for the "PokeQueens" category. I succeeded, because I really wanted something fun, something for the summertime, something for, you know, the girls to get ready and party to.
LYRICS (translated to English)
What an antelope you are, a gazelle I’ll burst your display and your panel So juicy, how can I resist trying I ask the mirror all day long
Only if I reach you and I guarantee you I’ll gulp you down, squeeze you, soak you
What an antelope you are, a gazelle The great flood, you are so good, good, good
I want you to shake it, to hit it on the ground I want you to bounce it, to carbonate like soda Like we are at home, like we are in the living room The match is set up, I want you naked
They say you are scary but I’m not afraid They say you are dirty but I don’t see dust Once with me and you’ll want again I come with a label ‘Consume responsibly’
I’ve seen everything of yours, locker in the changing room Come take a look at yourself, I have a mirror in the bedroom You have to be proud, I don’t mess around often I won’t give you change back
What an antelope you are, a gazelle I’ll burst your display and your panel So juicy, how can I resist trying I ask the mirror all day long
Only if I reach you and I guarantee you I’ll gulp you down, squeeze you, soak you
What an antelope you are, a gazelle The great flood, you are so good, good, good
You are a storm, you are a fire from head to toe Once ignited I can’t extinguish you Our bodies are talking, I hear the dialogue
I want to be inside, you are my den I can’t stand being played around with You don’t know me, but you’ve heard of me We started from the bottom like we were on the start
Before continuing I want to see an ID Tonight we are a whole brigade like students You land it on the ground, I hear applause When I said ‘Bang-bang’ you got motivated When I said ‘Tear!’ you tore the chain

WEEK 1: PICK YOUR POISON
Song For Our Daughter Laura Marling
This week, thanks to my LOVELY competitor Fuhlei Sheeo, I was assigned the White Challenge from season 6 of Daniel's Song Race. Basically, I have to send a song that thematically fits with "White." Unfortunately for me, White stands purity, innocence, peace, surrender, and happiness which is basically the exact opposite of "Glamor, Filth, and Horror." I had to search around for a while before I found a choice I was happy with.
"Song For Our Daughter" is from Laura Marling's 2020 album of the same name. The song, like the rest of the album, is dedicated to Laura and her husband's young daughter. This song in particular, though, plays around with the themes of corruption of innocence, iding secrets in order to maintain innocence, and the complications that come from these secrets being revealed. The lyrics are mournful, sad, but yet optimistic in a slightly twisted way.
"So you wished for a kiss from god
you mourn in your childish loss innocence gone but its not forgot You'll cut your way through it somehow" This small excerpt from the later half of the song is just a small portion of what can be expect from the lyrics of the song. Musically, the song is stunning but holds darkness in it as well, similar to the lyrics.
LYRICS
Though they may want you to tread in their trail Only to see if the path they set fails Though they may want you to take off your clothes Whatever they think that the action exposed With your clothes on the floor Taking advice from some old balding bore You’ll ask yourself “did I want this at all?” Do you remember what I said The book I left by your bed The words that some survivor read
Lately I’ve been thinking bout our daughter growing old All of the bullshit that she might be told There’s blood on the floor Maybe now you’ll believe her for sure
She remembers what I said The book I left by her bed The words that some survivor read Though they may take you for all you had left You wont be forgotten for what you had not done yet So you wished for a kiss from god You mourn in your childish loss Innocence gone but its not forgot You’ll cut your way through it somehow
You remember what I said The book you left by your bed The words that will outlive the dead

WEEK 1: PICK YOUR POISON
1:32
Real Death Mount Eerie
For the first week, I was assigned the challenge Cry For Me.
The song is emotional. It has the ability to tear you into pieces. Death is something that we should not fear.
A week after you died, a package with your name on it came And inside was a gift for our daughter you had ordered in secret, and collapsed there on the front steps I wailed
LYRICS
Death is real, someone's there and then they're not And it's not for singing about; it's not for making into art When real death enters the house, all poetry is dumb When I walk into the room where you were And look into the emptiness instead
All fails My knees fail My brain fails Words fail
Crusted with tears, catatonic and raw, I go downstairs and outside and you still get mail A week after you died, a package with your name on it came And inside was a gift for our daughter you had ordered in secret, and collapsed there on the front steps I wailed:
A backpack for when she goes to school a couple years from now You were thinking ahead to a future you must have known deep down would not include you, though you clawed at the cliff you were sliding down, being swallowed into a silence that is bottomless and real
It's dumb, and I don't want to learn anything from this I love you

PICK YOUR POISON
COLOUR FESTIVAL
RED
Hellfire Judge Claude Frollo (Tony Jay)
For the first Floorshow the challenge is "Pick Your Poison" where we have to use the theme of a past DSR challenge and fit it to HMH. Miss Fuhlei Sheeo was so lovely to give me the Colour Festival from DSR season 2, episode 8. This means I have to find a song fitting a colour from the original challenge. I chose red and the song "Hellfire" from Disney's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". The song is one of the darkest and cruellest Disney villain songs and Disney songs in general. "Hellfire" speaks quite bluntly about sin and human corruption plagueing Judge Claude Frollo, a righteous and ruthless Parisian justice minister (design stolen from Dan)
Lyrics
[Intro: Choir]
Confiteor Deo Omnipotenti
Beatae Mariae semper Virgini
Beato Michaeli archangelo
Sanctis apostolis omnibus sanctis
[Verse 1]
Beata Maria
You know I am a righteous man
Of my virtue I am justly proud
(Et tibi Pater)
Beata Maria
You know I'm so much purer than
The common, vulgar, weak, licentious crowd
(Quia peccavi nimis)
Then tell me, Maria
Why I see her dancing there
Why her smoldering eyes still scorch my soul
(Cogitatione)
I feel her, I see her
The sun caught in her raven hair
Is blazing in me out of all control
(Verbo et opere)
[Chorus]
Like fire
Hellfire
This fire in my skin
This burning
Desire
Is turning me to sin
[Verse 2]
It's not my fault
(Mea culpa)
I'm not to blame
It is the g-word girl
The witch who sent this flame
(Mea maxima culpa)
It's not my fault
(Mea culpa)
If in God's plan
(Mea culpa)
He made the devil so much
Stronger than a man
(Mea maxima culpa)
Protect me, Maria
Don't let this siren cast her spell
Don't let her fire sear my flesh and bone
Destroy Esmeralda
And let her taste the fires of hell
Or else let her be mine and mine alone
[Chorus]
Hellfire
Dark fire
Now g-word, it's your turn
Choose me or
Your pyre
Be mine or you will burn
[Outro]
God have mercy on her
(Kyrie Eleison)
God have mercy on me
(Kyrie Eleison)
But she will be mine
Or she will burn!

WEEK 1: PICK YOUR POISON
Mirror Mirror Vampillia feat. BiS 3:51+
This week, I was assigned Mood Swings from Season 6. This challenge was to match a song to one of the seven assigned emotions (Angry, Depressed, Dreamy, Energetic, Optimistic, Restless, and Sassy). While angry would be the easy way out for this, I decided to go for optimistic. Optimistic is an emotion that envokes good vibes and happiness, which is far from glamour, filth, and horror, so I kind of dug a bit of a pit for myself.
"Mirror Mirror" is from Vampillia's 2014 album The Divine Move, a new type of release from Vampillia, as they engaged with a pair of vocal identities, Togawa Jun and BiS. The song itself is a collaboration between Vampillia, a 10 membered self-discribed Brutal Orchestra from Ōsaka, and BiS, one of the first Japanese idol groups to stray away from the sugary-sweet style that was popularised by AKB48 and their subgroups, with their punk sound and their taboo portrayal (including nude photoshoots, adding a 74-year-old fashion designer as a member after advertisting they'd be adding a JK (slang for a high school girl) to the group, and their overall disdane for the standard idol life). "Mirror Mirror" is a song that's written as a way that fits BiS' mocking stance on standard Japanese culture, specifically with the opening fitting a standard Japanese graduation song, with both the lyrics and the instrumentation. The song then melds into a more standard song for both Vampillia and BiS, with a more standard post-punk instrumentation and the screams.
"From my pinkieI cut the crimson thread The lock to the door, just break it With your trembling voice"
This little snippet of the track shows off a showcase of the optimistic nature of the song, and also showcases how some of the song can truely show that there can be some filth and glamour within the purity that is normally associated with optimism.

WEEK 1: PICK YOUR POISON NETFLIXPOP AND CHILL
For this task I got given Netflixpop and Chill (Season 7, Episode 7). I’ve decided to research Netflix originals, that are associated with the horror genre, as it embodies the HMH spirit. I was originally going to find something from the very popular show Stranger Things, however I decided to select my song from the supernatural horror series, the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Netflix’s adaptation of the Archie Comics’ series and the 90s sitcom Sabrina The Teenage Witch. The song I’ve selected is …
Sleep Machine - "Wild Woman"
[Season 1, Episode 3; Chapter Three: The Trial of Sabrina Spellman]
The song in general personifies Sabrina's witchy spirit, due to the themes of horror and femininity presented through out the lyrics. Therefore, embedding the horror of the HMH themes in this song. Where the song plays the episode, Rosalind, Sabrina and Susie (Before he transitioned in the series) hunt for the books 'banned' by the Principal, out of rebellion, due to Rosalind wanting to use one of these books for her assignment.
LYRICSRunning with the wolves under the moon, I'm singing over bones Like a fire on the river, I'm bringing hell where it never goes I'm a blood, sin, seduction Black magic spirit child in the spinning sky No fury like a woman's soul awoken from the blackest night
Ooh, ooh I'm a wild, wild woman I'm a wild, wild woman
Dancing with the demons to the beating thunder on a desert road Harrowing the night, I'm sowing footprints on the soil I'm the keeper of the treasure, hunted by every man and son Casting shadows on the skeletons of everything I've done
Ooh, ooh I'm a wild, wild woman I'm a wild, wild woman I'm a hellfire rising Thunder and lightning I'm a wild, wild, wild, wild woman
Ooh, ooh (I'm a wild, wild woman) I'm a wild, wild woman I'm a wild, wild woman I'm a hellfire rising Thunder and lightning I'm a wild, wild, wild, wild woman Wild, wild woman Wild, wild woman
