"Hasta La Raíz" by Natalia Lafourcade Week 5: Reinas de los Muertos
1:55+
After searching, there was not other song that felt more special to me, this one of my favorites songs of all time, this just feels so nostalgic and makes me happy.
Día de muertos it's about honor and remembering your loved ones that are not with us anymore, this song it's really special cause talks about how even when they are gone, they are not forgotten, they are still part of me, to my roots, to the person I am to this day. This song it's just an hymn for latin culture and very simbolic to remember the loved ones and our identity. This song is a tribute and offering of what all my loved ones that are not longer here have made me who I am and they will NEVER be forgotten.
''I carry you inside me, to the root''
Also, it has been a very important song used to remember all people who have dissapear for different reasons in Latinamerica, as a tribute that tehy will never be forgotten, so If you also want to check this really emotional version, it's amazing and heartmoving for me
| LYRICS IN ENGLISH
I keep crossing rivers,
Walking through forests,
Loving the sun
Every day I keep pulling thorns
From the depths of my heart
At night I keep igniting dreams
To clean every memory with sacred smoke
When I write your name
In the white sand with a blue background
When I look at the sky, in the cruel form of a grey cloud,
You appear
One evening, climb a high hill
Look at the past
You will know that I have not forgotten
I carry you inside me, to the root
And, that you may grow better, you will be here
Although I hide myself behind the mountain
And find a field full of sugar cane
There will be no way, my moonbeam,
For you to leave
I think that every instant survived while walking
And every second of uncertainty
Every moment of not knowing
Are the exact key to this tissue
That I always carry under my skin
In this way I protect you
Here, follow me inside
I carry you inside me, to the root
And, that you may grow better, you will be here
Although I hide myself behind the mountain
And find a field full of sugar cane
There will be no way, my moonbeam,
For you to leave

WEEK 5: REINA DE LOS MUETROS
No Es Serio Este Cementerio (This cemetery isn't serious) Mecano
Why did I choose this song? I'm definitely taking a risk with this one because it doesn't quite fit the sonical theme of the competition. Although the song is new wave, the lyrics definitely describe the challenge pretty well.
The lead singer of this Spanish band sings about dead people (no shocker). She manifests her afterlife in heaven after dying.
Although the song is not 100% linked with Dia de los muertos, certain aspects overlap each other. Ultimately, the overall theme of the song is that death is an integral part of life. And we should not fear it because it is inevitable. Whether heaven or hell (stream Ava Max) exists, we shouldn't focus on what's coming after we pass away. As cliché as it sounds, enjoy every second on this planet.
LYRICS

This week, we were all assigned the challenge of sending a song with a theme based around Día de los Muertos. Día de los Muertos originated several thousand years ago with the Aztec, Toltec, and other Nahua people, who considered mourning the dead disrespectful. For these pre-Hispanic cultures, death was a natural phase in life’s long continuum. The dead were still members of the community, kept alive in memory and spirit—and during Día de los Muertos, they temporarily returned to Earth. The holiday's festivities unfold over two days in an explosion of color and life-affirming joy. Sure, the theme is death, but the point is to demonstrate love and respect for deceased family members. Ofrendas, calaveras, The calavera Catrina, and many more iconic foods are common in the offerings presented to the deceased. The point of the holiday is to make sure that the deceased feel welcomed and loved on the one full day which they can return to the world of the living.
"Libertad" is one of the B-Side tracks of Parisian singer Clara Ysé's debut EP, Le monde s'est dédoublé. The EP itself was was written as a way to help Clara over the premature death of her mother, Anna Dufourmantelle, when she drowned saving two children who were swimming in a river near Paris in July 2017. Having been taught the language by a Colombian careworker and her grandparents in Madrid, she performs this song fully in Spanish. She mentioned about her album that “I wanted the story to change. Telling about this crossing: finding people you have lost but who are still there, more than saying goodbye to my mother. I think she would have been happy with these songs. In Océan mer, Alessandro Baricco's book, in the midst of a storm, people die one after the other, and when we believe that there is no hope, there is a white sail to the horizon. This EP was my white sail." In many myths about the holiday, the dead are allowed to mingle with the rest of the humans. This song touches heavily on the idea of people mingling together from both sides of the grave.
"Stay, like the wind between my hands Stay, like the dance of the Romani witches Stay, like the river that roots the moon Like the clouds that gallop in the old lagoon"
Clara said that to heal, you have to speak a language that directly addresses the unconscious. This song is her attempt in doing so to share her feelings on her mother's passing, and how she just wants her mother's spirit to stay with her. While Clara may not be someone from Latin America, the celebration of death and the fleeting moments which people are able to gather with deceased loved ones is something that brought her comfort over the 21 months between her mother's death and the release of this EP. While there are only 24 hours in which the dead can mingle with the living, that is time enough to bring comfort to someone who is in mourning of an important figure in their life.

WEEK 5: REINA DE LOS MUETROS SON DE DIFUNTOS Translation: "Song of the Deceased" (by Lila Downs)
I've decided to choose this song because when I was researching songs for this week, I came across this live performance of the song and I felt fully immersed in the performance, as it made me feel like I was at actual Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) festival. This was due to the traditional Mexican instruments, the energy of the performer, the costumes and the 'Cempasúchiles' around the microphone, which are marigolds native to Mexico, where the name is originated from the Aztecs. They are prominent to the festival, as they are placed on graves during the holiday, as it is believed the flowers bring back the souls from the dead, from it's colours and scents. They also symbolise the fragility of life, due to the flower's short life; spanning from early summer to the frosty autumn. The lyrics also contain themes surrounding this festival, as death is a prominent theme in the lyrics, as it tells the story of a person dying.

WEEK 5: REINAS DE LOS MUERTOS
La Danza de la Muerte (Dance of the Dead) Fanko
Día de los Muertos is a festivity, a celebration that honors the dead and their legacies. In many Catholic nations, enduring traditions like leaving gifts on graves or setting up altars of dead relatives is a custom in many Catholic countries. (In the Philippines, we call it "Araw Ng Mga Patay." We're not as colorful as how Mexico does it though. I have distinct memories of my childhood going to the local cemetery in the Philippines to light candles and place flowers on my late grandfather's grave.)
"La Danza de la Muerte" leans toward an upbeat, celebratory tone with its festive brass instrumentation that distinguishes itself as Mexican. The band Fanko is from Guadalajara after all. Vocally, it's somewhat melancholy, but still has that celebratory attitude towards the cycle of life and death. My interpretation? Life is a vivid dream, and death is a final gift before we wake up into the vastness that is outside of mere existence. The translated lyrics "when everything goes dark it is to wake up" I perceive as waking up from the dream of life and moving on to an eternal afterlife.
As translated from the video's description:
LYRICS
ENGLISH
I'm alone and I'm going straight to the sun. I am so tiny but I am growing. In the vastness I find myself Suddenly the reflection of my being in the whole.
I know that I dance the dance of death, ancient as the sea, My body submerges and in the immensity I observe Incandescent the beauty of the beings of the deep.
If I find you I will not die I take you by the hand feeling you without end. And it is eternity older than death. When everything gets dark it is to wake up.
I know that I dance the dance of death, ancient as the sea, My body submerges and in the immensity I observe Incandescent the beauty of the beings of the deep.
It has always been like this. I wake up suddenly, when everything goes dark it is to wake up. It has always been like this. I wake up suddenly, when everything goes dark it is to wake up.
USER'S NOTE: Lol didn't I just send a song a couple weeks ago in which the lyrics begin with being alone? I swear it's a coincidence!

SHIVA KINDETT EPISODE 5 • Reinas de los Muertos
Salvador Mon Laferte 2:21+
I have chosen "Salvador" (Saviour) from Mon Laferte's Día de los muertos themed album "Mon Laferte (Vol. 1)". The song is about the circle of life and death and how generations remember and care for each other.
<<< Salvador, eres salvador El de ojitos dormilones, quiero abrazarte, quiero cuidarte >>>
El día de los muertos is about remembering the dead, which is why this song has a very special connection to it for many people. The song can be about any beloved relative who has passed, is living or is still to be born. It is truly in the spirit of the life-death-circle that this holiday celebrates.
Death is usually to be considered a dark or negative thing, but on the day of the dead, people celebrate and invite the dead back into their lives through happiness and dancing which I think this song underlines a lot. In "Salvador", Mon Laferte is using a lot of images representing death in a positive way; such as dreaming and sleepy eyes.
Lyrics
I Just have to see the door the window is open I've watched again the stars in the planetarium Like when I was a little gyal I visited you in your neighborhood I think of you all year long I don't forget when you said you had a dark skin And that's why you could do whatever you wanted life saver, you are a life saver The one with sleep eyes, I wanna hold you, I wanna take care of you Life saver, you're a life saver No one can hurt you, cause you dream, because you sing Cause you're you life saver you wake up all of sudden And In your mind straws fly When you die, you'll be born Into a body of any other animal Wherever you want lifesaver, you are a lifesaver The one with sleepy eyes, I wanna hold you, I wanna take care of you Life saver, you're a life saver No one can hurt you, cause you dream, because you sing Cause you We're gon' drink a cup of tea & I'm gon' make you a bread with margarine, I like to see you when you eat With so much desires I don't want you lack anything Lifesaver, the one with sleepy eyes lifesaver, you are a lifesaver The one with sleepy eyes, I wanna hold you, I wanna take care of u Life saver, you're a life saver No one can hurt you, cause you dream, because you sing Lifesaver, you're life saver No one can hurt you, cause you dream, because you sing Cause you

WEEK 5: REINAS DE LOS MUERTOS
Himno Eterno Porter
Porter is a Mexican indie rock band based in Guadalajara. Their sound consists of a mixture of electronic and acoustic beats, rock guitars, sound loops and Juan Son's distinctive tenor voice and high pitch vocals. The band had cited artists such Air, Sigur Rós, Caifanes, Zurdok, Röyksopp, Café Tacvba, The Cure and Mecano as influences. In fact, portions of songs from several of these influences and others have been included in live performances of their songs.
It's weird, I don't understand Why you're not here anymore You're not physical, I never thought You wouldn't be here
Day of the Dead (Dia De Los Muertos) is a two day holiday that reunites the living and dead. Families create ofrendas (offerings) to honor their departed family members that have passed. These altars are decorated with bright yellow marigold flowers, photos of the departed, and the favorite foods and drinks of the one being honored. The offerings are believed to encourage visits from the land of the dead as the departed souls hear their prayers, smell their foods and join in the celebrations.
For this week, we were told to send a song surrounding the main themes of the Day of the Dead. This day is to remember the ones that are sadly not with us anymore, not with grief, but with passion and joy. "Himno Eterno (Eternal Hymn)" by Porter does just that. Despite not being directly linked to the Day of the Dead, one can believe that it would be suitable for the day. I know that the day is meant to be celebrations all day, but you have this sour moment when you remember your dead loved ones, and you maybe want to join them in their eternal journey in the afterlife. This song, through its musical structure and lyrics, deeply expresses the feelings and ideas about the death of a loved one. Addressing an issue as necessary as grief. An orchestra of death. The beauty of this song I think is very orchestral, it has very dramatic sections. It is a song that can talk about death, above all, as a concept like taking out what you bring inside when a loved one leaves. A kind of emotional purge and how you feel in that moment.
Today I want Live without realizing You stole the shine in my eyes My soul is screaming I want to see you up close I want to see you up close
LYRICS (translated to English)
It's weird, I don't understand Why are you not here anymore You are no longer physical, I never thought That you wouldn't be here
If something Had the power to change here It's illogical That you did not know what you did to me
Today I want Live without realizing You stole the shine in my eyes My soul is screaming I want to see you up close I want to see you up close
Today I want Live without realizing You stole the shine in my eyes My soul is screaming I want to see you up close I want to see you up close

WEEK 5: REINAS DE LOS MUERTOS
"Bajo Tu Ala" Tessa Ia
This week, I set out to stray a bit away from the beaten path. Traditional songs that celebrate Dias da las Muertos tend to stick to the same patterns, instrumentation, and lyrical ideas. While I enjoy much of the music I heard while doing research this week, quite simply I knew I needed to find something different in order to stand out. I turned towards Tessa Ia, a Norwegian-Mexican actress turned Musician. Her music finds its place between sweet pop, grungy alternative, and the traditional Mexican soundscape.
"Bajo Tu Ala", which translates to "Under Your Wing", is a song about mourning the loss of someone the singer holds near. The chorus of the song is particularly heart wrenching, chanting
"Stay just a moment love me lost in violent fragments of doubt Stay with me to the end Love me under your wiiiiiing when sleeping"
From my understanding, the singer is hoping that their loved one while still look out for them despite their absence. It also seems to be that their loved one has moved on, as "when sleeping" in this context sounds like a metaphor for death. Throughout the rest of the song, other illusions to death such as "Your lost footprints engulf me" in the 2nd verse, and the song ending with "under your wing to the end." Despite the significant other's loss, the singer still seems to feel connected to their loved one. Dias de las Muertos is about remembering those who have moved on from the physical world. Traditionally, it is believed that on the Day of the Dead loved ones from the Afterlife revisit the physical world in the form of a spirit. Perhaps this is why the singer still feels so connected to their loved one.
LYRICS
I have broken my head some time ago From the ditch blossom flowers that have fled It’s fpr what happens that I don’t understand Asking, Where am I going?, Where Do I come from? Stay just a moment Love me lost in violent fragments of doubt Stay with me to the end Love me under your wiiiiiiing when sleeping Your lost footprints engulf me Under horses as company You want me present and quiet And without a doubt you are my best medicine Stay just a moment Love me lost in violent fragments of doubt Stay with me to the end Love me under your wiiiiiiing when sleeping under your wiiiiiiing when sleeping under your wiiiiiiing when sleeping under your wing under your wing under your wing to the end Thank you to Argüello for providing a rough translation of the song. Te Amo

WEEK 5: REINAS DE LOS MUERTOS
Heaven AKUA
For this week, I basically had a very hard time finding a song. I initially started searching for songs in spanish but I had no luck. The song i'm sending, "Heaven" by AKUA is a celestial testimony of grief and acceptance.
This cathartic and personal project, which was crafted after she lost her father to cancer, is decribed as an encounter with staggering loss and explores the different stages of grief and mourning as well as her spiritual renewal.
<<Ghosts Please don't make 'em ghosts Ghost Please don't make 'em ghosts>>
In this line, the singer begs us to not forget about our deceased loved ones and make them "ghosts" in our lives. This is exactly the point of Día de los Muertos as it is a holiday with the purpose of remembering and honouring the dead.
<<See we all have a season searching for reasons to explain away our suffering>>
Día de Muertos can definitely be considered as a day and a reason to (temporarily at least) end the suffering that one might feel as it is a celebration full of joy and passion.
There's no mistaking Our times replaceable We know our time will come When some force will make us
Lliving, breathing Barely conceiving We try to Believe there's something out there protecting us See we all have a season Searching for reasons To explain away Our suffering
I know well as you Others before us Who thought like we do, Forgot they were mortal But you took 'em too There in the flesh, then they up and they vanish Essential the truth Time has her limits on all that we do Still we're convinced that somehow we're held immune Some force will make us
Ghosts Please don't make 'em ghosts Ghost Please don't make 'em ghosts
Please don't make 'em ghosts, (it's) hard to be alone Evidence of heaven is down here as far as i can see Please don't make 'em ghosts Please don't make 'em ghosts What cruel release is this supposed to be?
Essential the truth Time has her limits on all that we do Still we're convinced that somehow we're immune There in the flesh then they up and they vanish
See we living and we breathing And we all have a season You explain away Our, suffering
Ghost Please don't make 'em ghosts Ghost Please don't make 'em ghosts Please don't make 'em ghosts
Hard to be alone Evidence of heaven is down here as far as i can see Please don't make 'em ghosts Please don't make 'em ghosts What cruel release is this supposed to be?

Tell me why they up-and-leave? Heaven don't you wait for me
