TESS TICULAR-TORSHUN
Menacing: presenting, suggesting, or constituting a menace or threat: threatening (Merriam-Webster, 2020).
Andy Stott - "Violence"
This song is the embodiment of the term menacing, as it the song's narrative describes a 'threatening' situation, in this case being watched. Significantly, 'stalking' is presented throughout the lyrics, reinforcing the menacing situation the individual is in, as the word connotes sinister themes. Other lyrics include 'numbing the truth', which reinforces the distortion menacing situations can create and 'chasing silently' indicates the unknowingness of where the vocalist is being watched, reinforcing this menacing presence. The vocalist's whispery voice illustrates the sense of weakness and fear, which reinforces she is in a dangerous situation, associated with the term. Furthermore, the instrumental of the song has a 'menacing' vibe to it, the random jumps in pitch create a sense of fear; thus, making you feel threatened. Personally, I felt like I was in this menacing narrative, as the song made me feel threatened by this danger. There is also an unofficial music video of this, under the channel name 'Raines Loomiarr', which I will link below, which visualises this menacing and sinister vibe.
Lyrics:
Numbing this truth and I'm not my hands You shake your different suits, I watch and meet Yellow glass, he went taut over here Inside, inside
Who is stalking? Who is crouching? Your glassy words gloss over him Inside, Inside
Clap your hands, clap your hands Can see far and he's smart Who is alone in my mind? Just among the messy
Numbing this truth and I'm not my hands You shake your different suits, I watch and meet Yellow glass, he went taut over here Inside, inside
Clap your hands, clap your hands Can see far and he's smart Who is alone in my mind? Just among the messy
Who is stalking? Who is crouching? Your glassy words gloss over him Inside, Inside

WEEK 7: THE CLOWNERY I BROUGHT FOR THE CHALLENGE BROUGHT ME HERE
Cursed Hana Valley Kaida Akari, Ueda Masami, Yamaguchi Hiroshi, Kondō Rei 1:47+
All good things must come to an end eventually, and I guess this even includes my Bianca Del Rio era. As Mrs. Merriam-Webster states, menacing means "presenting, suggesting, or constituting a menace or threat : THREATENING" Delicious.
So, I decided to send the song Cursed Hana Valley from the 2006 video game Ōkami. Ōkami follows Amaterasu, a character based on Amaterasu-ōmikami, the goddess of the sun from Shintō, as she traverses Nippon, a land based on feudal Japan. The game's artstyle is heavily based off of sumi-e style of ink art that was popular during the Muromachi, Sengoku, and Higashiyama periods of Japan. Just like in feudal Japan, war is everywhere, like in the Sengoku period (a time of war that lasted from 1467 to 1615). The only difference is that the world is overrun by demons lead by Orochi, an eight headed serpent, and you are a dog with a magic paintbrush. Woof, bitches.
In the game, the Hana Valley is a land adjacent to the Shinshu Fields, which holds a wondrous waterfall. However, this place is cursed as well, and you need a certain rejuvenation power to restore both Hana Valley and Shinshu Fields. The floral atmosphere of the valley (hence being called Hana Valley, aka flower valley) is completely gone. All the plant life is dead. Demons overrun the valley. Dead trees literally hurl boulders at your canine body. Before entering the valley, Issun (your companion who's name literally translates to one inch, as a reference to the issun-bōshi, a folktale from Japan) mentions how the surrounding area is probably the most demonically corrupted area in the game, giving an already menacing aura to this region before you can even interact with it.
The song itself is made with a full string orchestra, an oboe, and a number of traditional Japanese instruments, such as the 13-stringed koto, shakuhachi (bamboo flute that doubled as a club during wars), and the taiko. These three instruments are common in traditional compositions, with the shakuhachi on its own being tuned to the minor pentationic scale (unlike most traditional western instruments being tuned to the major heptatonic scale), which causes that delicious dissonance we love so much here in HMH. The song starts off with the koto over a minor chord, and this styling continues throughout the song. Eventually, the shakuhachi is added into the mix, with an oboe overlaying the shakuhachi's melody a couple of counts later. The piece eventually expands to add in more instruments, while still keeping the basic tonality of the previous measures. This styling is consistent with the menacing aura that the valley exudes during this portion of the game.
I know I've been read for my reliance on J-Pop during the first part of the competition, so I wouldn't be suprised if that same critism arose from this. However, this song fits the theme y'all asked for me, so I am here to deliver a menacing, neo-Japanese-classical whopper that scared the shit out of me as a kid (why the fuck did I think playing this part of Ōkami at 2 am at the age of 8 was a good idea)
