WEST VIRGINIA'S NEXT STARLIGHT HAS ARRIVED!
Charleston, 20 July 2022 - After the official confirmation of participation made by West Virginia Public Broadcasting (WVPB) and a decent 22nd place achieved by SÜ and Silverberg in Phoenix with their song "Til the End of Time", the West Virginian delegation has decided to take a different route for the sixth edition to be held in Minnesota as our next artist is ready to show America the good food.
Introducing...
rienne (they/she)
rienne is a queer alt-indie pop artist originally from Manila but is currently living in West Virginia.
Creating music since they were 13 years old, they credit their sound to artists such as Clairo, Beach Bunny, and The Lumineers; their lyricism to their personal experiences as a Gen Z who’s part of the LGBTQ+ community while living with depression. Mixing these together, you get rienne’s idyllic sound with candid lyrics that’s light to the ears but sarcastically heavy to the heart.
In true Gen Z fashion, rienne is a self-taught artist who records and produces their songs using just their phone and laptop. By sliding into Off The Record’s Instagram DMs last 2021, rienne was signed right away as their relentless optimism and unapologetic sense of self and humor transcended in both their music and personality.
May it be through their music or charisma, rienne is a breath of fresh air in a world full of filters.
Their song "Sinagtala" ("Starlight") is a personal song sung in Tagalog that talks about looking after ourselves and our mental health.

m/l: rienne, Ricky del Rosario Ilacad, Jensen Gomez TIMESLOT: 3:35+
LYRICS and (rough) Translation by the HoD:
Oh sinagtala Oh sinagtala Oh sinagtala Oh sinagtala Oh my love, just rest I know your soul is tired Just cry it out, just cry it out
I hope the light in your eyes doesn't fade away You don't know how important it is That you're here, you're here Ahhh
Don't let go, oh love Oh love I won't leave you Just be here, just be here Oh love, oh love Looking up [to the sky], wishing that You don't get lost, oh starlight Oh starlight Oh starlight
Look at the mirror, let your emotions out It's not bad to check on yourself You're not alone, you're not alone
Don't let go, oh love Oh love I won't leave you Just be here, just be here Oh love, oh love Looking up [to the sky], wishing that You don't get lost, oh starlight
Oh starlight Oh starlight Oh starlight Oh starlight
rienne has said regarding the song: "sinagtala is a love letter i wrote for myself. i always craved for a love that made me feel whole. i never really bothered to look deep within myself that’s why i never found it. after everything i’ve been through, after everything i’ve done wrong, after everything that has happened; sinagtala is something very personal that i’d love to share to other people. it doesn’t matter if you understand the language or not. what matters is you feel something when you listen to it. sinagtala is about giving yourself another chance. another chance to try to be better. another chance to love yourself. it’s never easy, but it sure is worth a try."
Best of luck to rienne in Minnesota!

Louisiana Confirms After Slayyyter and Big Freedia brought Louisiana its best ever result in OUSC, it is without a doubt that the state will be present in the grand final of the 6th edition. We are also proud to announce that, like our good friends Hawaii, we will also be debuting a new language. Arabic will be heard in full on the OUSC stage for the first time ever, after Inas X performed 'Bailalo' with one repeated word in Arabic, yalla (يلا) in the first edition.
Kuwaisiana (Kuwait + Louisiana) was developed by Kuwaiti songwriter +Aziz, who was born in New Orleans, and spent his pre-COVID years in Louisiana. The sextet’s sound blends funk, rock, ska with New Orleanian jazz, adding a unique twist to Alternative Arab Music can sound like. +Aziz now lives in Seattle but will be travelling to Minnesota to represent his homestate, Louisiana. He will be the second(?) Arab artist to participate in the contest, after Palestinian-American Inas X.

Glory to the people! From Khabarovsk to Alaska.Слава народу! От Хабаровска до Аляски.Khabarovsk ☆ 20thJuly 2022After the amazing fifth place by the only queen herself Anna Graceman, the broadcaster Alaska Rural Communications Service (ARCS) revealed to the website Alaska Daily News that the state will participate in the upcoming sixth edition of the nationwide contest for sure. "I mean we did think about withdrawing but as queen Anna herself gifted us an AQ again, there is no reason for us to make her disappoint after all her efforts." - Celeste Buckingham stated. Now that there are already three states that decide to debut a new language to the contest by far, we will join the train as well. We already did it once by debuting Central Alaskan Yup'ik language in the second edition held in the beautiful city of Anchorage and now it's time for the grand debut of another language which will be presented by ...
★ Olga Balashova (Ольга Балашова) is an American musician, music producer, composer, and singer-songwriter. She was born in Moscow, Russia, raised in Anchorage, Alaska and is currently based in Brooklyn, New York. A classically trained pianist and self-taught electronic music producer, she has worked in a wide range of genres, including classical, electronic pop, and Russian folk. Best known for Край (Krai), a tribute to her Russian heritage, and Diamonite, an album she produced with Gunnar Olsen and Jason Nazary under the moniker BELL, she has also played in Chairlift and Dirty Projectors and collaborated with Tom Vek under the name Nothankyou. In 2016, Bell released her third studio album Tempo. ★ Olga moved to Alaska from Russia when she was 7 and lived there until when she went to college in Boston, where she studied classical piano at New England Conservatory. Alaska is a beautiful place that will always stay in her heart. The air is sweet and clean there and makes her remind of her old time. It could be clear now that the language we will debut in this edition is Olga's mother tongue Russian and the song that Olga will perform in Minnesota is ...
Khabarovsk Krai (Хабаровский Край) Alaska in Own USAvision Song Contest 6 ★ Olga emigrated with her mother from Moscow to Anchorage, Alaska, at the age of 7 and maintains strong ties to her Russian heritage. Her new album, "Krai (Край)" released on Tuesday by New Amsterdam, is a reverent mediation on her ancestry. “In Russian, the primary definition of ‘krai’ is ‘the edge of something’ — the edge of the table, the edge of the plate,” Olga explained by herself. “It’s a really common word. But if you start to talk about it in a geographical sense, it’s ‘that which is other’ — the wilderness, the hinterland, the edge of what we know or what we’re comfortable with.” ★ The lyrics are mostly inspired by geography and traditional fables: from the majestic (“Russia, Mother Russia, Russian Motherland/ Much glory, Russia, much glory have you earned!” she sobs pridefully in the eighth movement, “Khabarovsk Krai”) to the sort of stoic melancholy that seems inherently Slavic. On her OUSC entry "Khabarovsk Krai", the vibes and glockenspiel tinkle in a minor key above a throbbing the machine-gun percussion along with the traditional Slavic singing style which echoes her inner proud of her homeland. The website Alaska Daily News has reported that the Alaskan delegation decided to send this song is to reminisce the 2020–2021 Khabarovsk Krai protests where people were protesting the regime government. Celeste also commented on her personal instagram story that "Isn't it great tho like imagine the whole arena screaming "Glory to Russia" in front of the big beautiful Free Russia flag instead of that regime flag?".
Best of luck to Olga in Minnesota and #FreeRussia! ☆

I CAN BE YOUR ANGEL ANGLE Colorado confirms participation & reveals entry.
Colorado confirms participation for the 6th Own USAvision Song Contest in Minnesota(?). After the state's second consecutive non-qualification, the delegation moves into a different direction. A song is already selected.
"Angle" - Willow Pill feat. Kornbread 0:40+ or 1:26+ (if it's not too NSFW)
Willow Pill (real name Willow Patterson) is a drag performer born and raised in Denver and currently based in Chicago. She is best known as a contestant and winner of the 14th season of RuPaul's Drag Race, having recently come out as transgender during the airing of the show. Along with fellow drag performer, Drag Race contestant, and trans icon Kornbread, they will represent Colorado with "Angle" (deliberately misspelled from "angel"), a reference to Willow's now infamous Drag Race entrance.
We want to raise awareness and express our support for trans rights. We are proud of the representation and wish both of them all the best in the upcoming contest.
