TESS TPUSI
Season 9, Episode 2: Power to the People
Well, last week certainly was a week, I fear. We are going to pretend we didn't see that.
Anyways, let's get straight to the point, unlike what I did last week, I fear. I'm using the song "The Garden" by my favourite artist of all time, Flower Face (of course I was gonna find a way to send her. Why are y'all acting shocked). "The Garden" is a song that is written in regard to climate change. The Garden that is consistently referenced in this song is an artificial garden, either a moon colony or another type of man-made Earth for humans to live in, created after humanity destroyed all the remaining gardens with our unbridled expansionist policies. The natural wonders of the Earth have been squandered by humanity and all that remains is destruction, dead animals and poisonous gasses. The world is seemingly just one mass of resources just waiting to be exploited. The album cover is also a reflection of this. The cover features a drawing of Flower Face's face, drawn by Flower Face herself, wearing a gas mask, with plastic flowers placed around the outside of the mask. Long story short, humanity has done did f-ed up the planet, and if we don't do anything, we will be living in one of Hoxha's bunkers, with plastic plants and pollution giving us company, and maybe a corpse. Who knows? Well, we will in like 25 years if nothing happens to stop it.
"IF THE WORLD HASN'T KILLED ME YET; WELL, IT'S JUST A MATTER OF DAYS" Flower Face - 0:48
Flower Face - The Garden
TS: 3:08+ |
Lyrics[Intro]
All live in the garden
[Verse 1]
The lights are always on in the street
So I never sleep
My dreams have turned to plastic
And they rattle in my head
And now there's concrete in the yard
Where the sunflowers used to be
I thought I heard your voice
But it was only the TV
[Pre-Chorus]
I think I'll waste away here
I think I'll waste away
If the world hasn't killed me yet
Well, it's just a matter of days
The poison ate our lungs up
And there's not much we can do
If I could, I would get on a spaceship
And spend my last days on the moon
[Chorus]
They say they're building us a garden
So when the birds and trees are all gone
We'll live where the sky is golden
Bathe in artificial oceans
But if they couldn't tap the marrow
Every river, every sparrow
Laying dead inside their cages
Without their songs, they have been wasted
They say someday we'll find the answer
We'll be climbing up that ladder
While they burn up in the atmosphere
We'll be okay 'cause we'll all live in the garden
[Outro]
I want to build a wall around you
And say that I'm the one who found you
But despite all of my virtue
I know that I'm the one who hurts you
Well, don't you know they lie, dear?
There is no better place to find here
They packed up their things and left you
And I don't think I can protect you
I think that I have found the answer
Yeah, I'm climbing up that ladder
And I'm taking my friends with me
And we'll be okay 'cause we'll all live in the garden

DEE ABLAH SEASON 9 ♫ EPISODE 2
Power To The People
Send a song that covers political issues or makes a political statement.
Camila Moreno - Quememos el reino
TS: 3:11+
In latinamerican countries like Mexico, 10 women are killed each day. Femicides are a big problem product of a patriarchal society and a goverment that does nothing about it. This songs talks about revolution by minorities, as the song says this land is for indiginous and minorities. There many changes to still overcome like protect women's right, queer rights, indiginous rights. As the song says we wil burn the demons, cowards, owners of the nation. As we latinaemricans are tired of corrupted goverments who keep getting rich while we keep getting killed.
Spanish Lyrics + Translation
Lower the gun I told him asking
Baja el arma le dije pidiendo
Don't be a coward please
No seas cobarde, por favor
Where are my sisters?
¿Dónde están mis hermanas?
without them i'm lost
Sin ellas estoy perdida
Without them I'm about to make it
Sin ellas estoy a punto de hacerlo
Girlfriends, let's burn down the kingdom
Amigas, quememos el reino
Girlfriends, let's burn down the kingdom
Amigas, quememos el reino
When I descended to hell
Cuando descendí a los infiernos
I found a lot of people who wanted to go out
Encontré mucha gente que quería salir
I wanted to walk like them
Quise caminar como ellos
Try to understand what binds us there
Intentar entender lo que nos ata allí
We'll burn the demons
Quemaremos a los demonios
cowardly killers
Asesinos cobardes
owners of the nation
Dueños de la nación
We'll burn the demons
Quemaremos a los demonios,

MISS TOXIC 3000 Season 9, Episode 2: Power to the People
"Don't Shoot" by Shea Diamond
"Don't Shoot" reflects on Shea Diamond's experience as a previously incarcerated black trans woman, and also focuses on the systemic inequalities as well as violence faced by BIPOC & queer people and especially black and brown trans women in America.
Lyrics:
[Verse 1] Not your business but I've seen some shit Got snatched up by my mom when I was six I can still smell the smoke as the bullet missed That's a lot for a kid Had enough when I was fourteen I ran away so I can force down my dreams But I didn't have the knowledge The streets was too much Mama just taught me I wasn't enough
[Pre-Chorus] You're safe so you live it up Hard days, you've never seen them love I'm not saying I'm the only one But damn some days don't it feel like it
[Chorus] Hands up, please don't shoot They say that you'll love it if your mouth stay mute They say they don't see color but the blood stain show the proof Hands up, please don't shoot We'll living in a world but it can't take truth They say they don't see color but the blood stain show the proof
[Verse 2] Lock me up when I was nineteen There goes my twenties and there goes my dreams Put me on the yard and said sacrifice the queen That's a lot for a teen Cried so much when I was released Kissed the grass under my feet Modern slavery tried to get the best of me That's a lot for anybody
[Outro] Now I'm sitting in my fourties What I need I can afford it Butterflies on the red carpet That's a whole lot for me That's a whole lot for me

SPAGHETTINA FAGOTTINA GERMANOTTA Season 9, Episode 2: Power to the People This week, I am sending Poppy Ajudha with her feminist, pro-choice song "Playgod"
Recap: 2:44+
As can be seen in the lyrics, the song condemns the patriarchy that we all grew up in and calls for all genders to stand up against it. In the song, Poppy asks men to admit the truth about society and their actions, which she likens to them playing God and wanting women to obey them. She also states that the system betrays everyone in it, regardless of the gender and that the change of the world starts with men changing their ways and joining the fight. The interlude deals with abortion rights and the attack they currently face. It points out that opposing abortion rights is not about being "pro-life" but rather about wishing to control bodies. Playgod's lyrics are especially relevant in this day and age, with the repeal of Roe v. Wade being around a month old and many abortion bans and restrictions having already been put in place in several states. The song was released before that, but its message has only become more important ever since its release.
Lyrics:
[Verse 1] Sister stand up for what you believe I hear anarchy in the way you speak Teach her not to give up, only how to seek Ain't no anarchy in the way they cheat
[Verse 2] Sister stand up for what you believe Fight the power or die at their feet I know they don't see what you see But don't fight the people for being sheep [Chorus] He plays God He plays God God are the men who make you pay God are the men who force your way Play God is the image that he made To make you obey God are the men who make you pay God are the men who force your way Play God is the image that he made He plays God
[Verse 3] Brother stand up, admit to what you do This complex ain't helping me or you Changing the world starts with you Don't tell me you don't know what you do
[Verse 4] Brother listen up, she's trying to tell you This system failed us both, it's true Time to wise up, you know it's overdue Stuck in limbo can't follow through
[Interlude] This bill is not about pro-life or the right to life This bill is about control So why you all want to control our bodies? You know, you all are always trying to put the laws on us We are not a leaderless movement And by now we should have learned we not replicate the past
[Chorus] He plays God He plays God God are the men who make you pay God are the men who force your way Play God is the image that he made To make you obey God are the men who make you pay God are the men who force your way Play God is the image that he made To make you obey Nah-nah-nah, nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah He plays God Nah-nah-nah, nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah To make you obey Nah-nah-nah, nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah He plays God Nah-nah-nah, nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah He plays God
[Outro] He plays God He plays God He plays God He plays God He plays God

No fancy post from me this week as I’m posting from a phone and typing this on the notes app was painful enough
Miz Bulge Area
M.I.A. - Born Free
For this week’s prompt I will be sending Born Free by M.I.A., a song depicting the horrors of war and genocide, and the strive to be free. It is a song that I have sent in another format and I know that this might be a slight risk, however, I believe that this song truly captures the theme of this week and so here it is.
The lyrics allude to the Sri Lankan civil war that M.I.A. herself had to endure when her family moved to Sri Lanka from London when she was still a child. Some of the lines recall Maya hiding from the Sri Lankan Army, as Maya is an ethnic Tamil - a minority in Sri Lanka that has been discriminated by the Sinhala majority. I was close to the ant Staying undercover, staying undercover.
Every person is born free, with dignity, and basic human rights. It is what the first line of the UN’s Declaration of Human Rights states. But despite that, the sentiment of this basic sentence gets disregarded even to this day.
And while some of M.I.A.’s recent statements and her rather polarising persona might not be the tea to some people, I believe that this does not take away any meaning from her artistry, music, lyrics or visuals. And despite her being a victim of the racism, misogyny, sexism she had to face in the music industry, Maya remains one of the most important artists of the 21st century, at least for me, and that’s good enough for me to send this punk banger.
The music video for the song does not shy away from controversy too. It depicts a genocide against red-haired people in a quite NSFW video which was actually banned from YouTube upon its release in 2010. The video has been reuploaded since then but I do not recommend watching it (it is also 9 minutes long and the song is chopped lol). By substituting Sri Lankan Tamils for red-haired white people, M.I.A. is showcasing the mistreatment and carelessness of Western people when it comes to atrocities happening to BIPOC people across the globe. People will care more if white people are being the victim, right? No matter if you are Tamil, red-haired or any other person, you are born free, and no one has any authority over your life.

LADY WESTMINSTER - EPISODE 2
Challenge: Power to the people - Send a song that covers political issues or makes a political statement
Faber Das Boot ist voll
For this challenge I have selected Swiss singer Faber and his song "Das Boot ist voll". The theme for the week is quite open because there are more than enough pressing political issues past and present. I decided to go with a theme that connects past and present and that theme is the growing number of right-wing talking points, parties, policies and politics in Europe and in this case Germany. In Germany 2015 has sadly become a loaded topic with the CDU, the leading German conservative party, using the mantra "2015 darf sich nicht wiederholen" (2015 may not be repeated) and of course the right-wing party AfD blaming refugees for every problem Germany faces and being an all around racist and xenophobic party. The song itself mentions several talking points made by a group named "Besorgte Bürger" (concerned citizens) by conservative and right-wing people and media which were and are at the forefront of fighting against everything related to refugees. Statements include Holocaust denial, the burning of places where asylum seekers were housed, the former Federal Minister for the Interior Horst Seehofer joking about 69 Afghan refugees being deported to Afghanistan on the day of his 69th birthday. He also speaks about the attitude of these people towards the Third Reich and the Nazis with relativising statements made towards events happening there (the car manufacturer Volkswagen being founded by the Nazis and the Autobahn being built by them). Two of the most poignant lyrics of the song are "Wenn sich 2019 33 wieder einschleicht" (When '33 sneaks its way back into 2019) which exemplifies the return of sentiments from 1933 returning to the discourse of 2019, and "Jedem das Seine, ja das seien weise Worte" (To each his own, yes those are wise words) which makes reference to the Nazi slogan "Jedem das Seine" (to each his own) which was found on the gates of the Buchenwald concentration camp and how nazi phrases such as those have made a return in Germany.
- Lyrics in German and English - - German - Früher war auch nicht alles schlechter sieht man an der Autobahn
Ihr wärt auch traurig gäb es keinen Volkswagen
Wolfsburg, Genie-Streich
Logisch denkt man dann manchmal zurück ans Dritte
Drum traust du keinen Medien in diesem scheiß Land
Asylzentrum, Ups!
- English - Not everything was bad back in the day You can tell by the Autobahn
You'd all be sad too if Volkswagen didn't exist Wolfsburg - a stroke of genius
Obviously that'll make you sometimes think back to the third
The thing with the Jews
You have to prove that first
They don't have to show you the shit from the history books
You won't be taken for an idiot
How smart of you
"The boat is full!" they shout on the ocean
"Yes, the boat is full!" you scream infront of the TV
It's hard to get smart for those who believe more quickly
You've known that for a long time
That's why you don't trust any media in this lovely country
Asylum centre
Whoops, the house is on fire
Let's see who will be the quickest
The quickest to run out
They want to take you for an idiot
But you're not having it
Worried citizen, yeah
I'm gonna give it to you too, in a minute When '33 sneaks its way back into 2019
When humanity and common sense are pushed aside by your anger
Worried citizen, yeah, I'll give it to you too in a minute
To each his own
Yes, those are wise words Haven't they got bread to eat?
Why don't they eat gâteau? Nobody is honest here any more
Only Horst never lied to you
On his birthday they're all
All being deported
You don't feel good in your body any more
And sometimes lonely, too
Yes, foreign in your own country
I don't feel good in my body any more
And sometimes lonely, too
Nobody was ever as foreign to me as you are
Worried citizen, yeah
I'm gonna give it to you too, in a minute
When '33 sneaks its way back into 2019
When humanity and common sense are pushed aside by your anger
Worried citizen, yeah, I'll give it to you too in a minute

Xhesika Luisa Nelson S09E02 - Power to the People
I won't put you through a dissertation this week! Partially because I have taken the words of the judges to heart and know that if one of my essays were to age the judging panel even further our beloved Deban Aderimi may be with us no longer, but mostly because I think this song itself says more than I possibly could about the assignment this week.
Clipping - "Blood of the Fang"
Where do I even start with this piece? Blood of the Fang is a powerful example of the short-lived Horrorcore genre of hiphop that also features elements of gospel and soul, and speaks of the violent history of racism, reminding that defeating racism requires a fight more than a discussion, delivering a powerful call to arms against white supremacy.
I think I'm just gonna post the Genius link where every single detail of this song is explained because I'm like... in awe of how everything in this nearly 5 minute epic is a powerful reference to the history of racism, even in the very opening intro "By the Christians, it is written that in the black Myrthian age there existed an addiction to blood", which is a reference to Sam Waymon's "The Blood of Thing (Part 2) Shadow of the Cross)" from a 1973 horror film which uses vampirism as a metaphor for white cultural imperialism and the hypocrisies of organised religion. These references and so many others are tied in throughout the song and like... wow.... I am not doing this justice with my words y'all really should check out the link for yourselves there is so much to take in.
I want to touch upon the music video as well because what am I if I do not pay attention to the CINEMA. The “Blood of the Fang” visual is inspired by a photo of Huey Newton — co-founder of The Black Panther Party for Self-Defense — hand-cuffed to a hospital gurney while being treated for a gunshot wound in the abdomen after a gun battle with Oakland police in October 1967, and is full of powerful imagery surrounding gun violence as well as the need to fight back. This song was only released in 2019 and still unfortunately only feels more relevant in the following years as both racist violence and systemic racism continue and no sign of those in power wanting to do anything about it.

MAXIMA XCX kim petras - treat me like a slut ts: idk youtu.be/kXcaEyZop3gi am a person not interested in politics, but a person interested in arguing and debating. so here is my argument for why i think Kim Petras' song "Treat Me Like a Slut" is a valid political statement and why it is super original and I will not accept any critique unless it is a proper rebuttal and based on facts and not based on fairytales and lies. Miss Petras has always been an artist that sparks conversations about various topics, and this particular song, Treat Me Like A Slut, and the whole album, Slut Pop, is a real eye opener and conversation starter about a certain political category that is so often scrutinized and criticized. and that is FEMINISM. It is fact and not fiction that women have had it rougher throughout the whole history of this earth and galaxy, and even today, a woman's right to have control over her body is constantly being chipped away in various parts of the world. Treat me like a slut is a song in it's core about consent and Kim's desire to be treated like a slut. She explicitly states "Treat me like a slut, little dirty bitch I like to fuck", which if you dive deeper, is a truly powerful statement, because consent is being granted, and in this time where the MeToo movement has been so influential, speaking so explicitly about what SHE wants is so important in a world where men take advantage so often of women without their consent. But we cannot discuss Miss Petras without discussing the elephant in the room, and that is that she is still working with an abuser. We must support women's rights, but we have to also discuss women's wrongs. Politics is riddled with hypocrisy, as is an album about female empowerment being produced by an abuser. My point in submitting this is not only to celebrate a yassy female empowerement, but to showcase that politics is more than what is presented on the surface, and that there is a lot of deceit and corruption behind the scenes that do not align with what is presented on the surface, and that it is important to look at things critically. I am not here to tell fairytales like a politician, I am here to keep it real.

la chica - 'la loba'the awakening of the witches is real. i was very excited for this theme because there really were a number of songs that i could have selected for this week. however, in our current political climate, there really wasn't any other collapse on my liked songs on spotify that i felt the need to share, as part of megan thee h&m retail manager's repertoire, for this elusive theme. la chica's art pop hymn 'loba' speaks on motherhood and in general taking ownership of her own body -- an issue that has only become more relevant thanks to the incredibly unjust overturning of roe v. wade, where the fossilized supreme court voted to overturn abortion rights. right off the bat, la chica shuts down the idea that anyone but her is in control of herself in the opening lyrics: "soy la que manda / soy la que sabe". in the song, la chica asserts herself as a 'wolf' ('loba'), a ravenous dominant alpha animal. as said song progresses, la chica reiterates that she is an angry woman [ed's note: did u see what i did there deban?] -- and calls for the listener to release their rage. "siglos y siglos y siglos / suena la voz del silencio / ya no más" are a very telling collection of lyrics. centuries upon centuries of women being mistreated, la chica is done being silent. and so should we! in our current global political climate, maternity is an issue that has been gravely relevant in the past couple of months thanks to the unjust ruling of roe v wade, thus i think its' powerful message (and beats! the song does slap and that is something we cannot overlook) about fighting patriarchal norms and for women's rights is one i think would resonate with a lot of people right now. i know it certainly does to me! once again, here are the FULL lyrics of the song under this spoiler tag nnyassss !!!
