S09E02: KEEPING UP WITH THE WAVE OF SUCCESS
Eva Máziková has won the first episode of Song Race and is ready to claim the crown again!
The song choice is... Ta Ne by Kristína!!!
The song is a popular hit among all Slovaks, but especially Easterners, as it is the most popular song that uses the Eastern Slovak dialect!
Being from Košice (the capital of Eastern Slovakia basically), this song was extremely well received by all of us, as we are very proud of Kristína and the fact she comes from the East too!
FOR CONTEXT: Slovakia has its largest internal distinction between the Western and Eastern side of it. The West is attempting to flourish, be fancy, modern and trendy, it is where you get 90% of all opportunities, especially the artistic ones. This, however, poorly reflects on the East, which is quite a forgotten hollow and without Košice, it would not hold up in any way culturally or economically as it is often stereotypically described as the land of "nothing", with "everyone being an alcoholic" and speaking in a strong Slovak dialect that some Westerners have a hard time understanding. For example, my mother's income would most likely be increased by at least 50% for the same amount of work if she lived in the West.
We do tend to make fun of being irrelevant to cope with it, but it's true we barely receive any proper representation in media. Kristína, however, is one of the very few people who have showcased the East in a positive light. Through the song Ta Ne, she made us feel seen and relevant without feeling ridiculed.
This is why it is a perfect song for this theme. Kristína is a hero of Eastern Slovakia, who we cherish and appreciate since the beginning of her career.

HOMETOWN HEROES
Send an artist from my Hometown
Bosque - Passiflora
Well, anyone who knows me already knows i'm from a small centralamerican country called Costa Rica flahcostarica . I was kinda torn of what direction go with this challenge, as we have a very small music industry. I decided to go with Passiflora for two reasons, it's a band from San José which it's really close to my small town and I have seen them live which it's a magical experience; the second reason, it is that I wanted to show a more folk side of our music, besides the latin rythms which it's the easy route. My country is known by it's nature and this song called Bosque (Forest), it's inspired by all that, my hometown it's full of nature and wildlife and this song and it's atmosphere, which I hope translates, i couldn't find the lyrics but the song basically talks about taking a loved one to this magic forest to have a connecting with nature and everything that surrounds, with this nostalgia of a past

TOYLET SWIFFER SEASON 9 • EPISODE 2 HOMETOWN HEROES Send a song from an artist who originates from (near) your hometown.
LILA OXI
For the second challenge, I heard you wanted Larissian cunt and this is exactly what you're gonna be served. I was born and raised in a city called Larissa, which is the capital and largest city of the Thessaly region in Greece. Population wise, it is the fifth-most populous city in the country with 148k people living in it. Naturally, finding singers from any city in Greece that isn't Athens or Thessaloniki can be quite difficult and Larissa is no exception, I frankly couldn't recall any at the top of my head when I saw the theme of the challenge. However, then it hit me that one of the most up-and-coming singers currently in Greece, Lila, is from Farsala which is a city located in the southern part of the Larissa regional unit. Lila has been doing excellent lately, as she has scored at least 4 hit songs in the timespan of 12 months, so it's always great to see artist from your (smaller) region thriving. The song I have chosen for this week is called "OXI" and it talks about female empowerment as it invites you to be your own bitch. It has trap influences which is Lila's current genre and also the most popular sound in Greece currently. It's a song she released before she blew up, however it still remains my favourite from her. |

TESS TPUSI Season 9, Episode 2: Hometown Heroes
For those of y'all who know me, I am a person who has called several places home. I was born in Akita, raised in suburban Detroit, go to uni in Lansing, and currently call Shiga Prefecture home, as I moved here a month ago today. Trying to find a single song that can capture this image was incredibly hard, but going through artists that I absolutely adore, I found out that one of them happens to call my current home, home.
Yuragi (揺らぎ, which means to waver or be shaken) is a post-rock band that calls Shiga home. The band was formed by vocalist Mirako in high school, and after a bunch of changes in lineups and hiatuses, resumed under their current name in 2015. The group has quickly become one of, if not the biggest band to be formed in Shiga.
Shiga has made me feel at home. Even though I'm only here on study abroad, I feel like this is a new home for me. And yet, something about being here on my own makes me feel a bit homesick for the other places I've called home. And on this track, this band from my new home captures these feelings in a way I can barely write.
"I Liked You Through the Veil" captures the moments where you can only look at various moments, no matter how much you want to dive headfirst into them. Living on my own on the other side of the planet from all of my friends and family makes me feel like I am a voyeur into their lives. Thinking about all of the moments I am missing out on by being so far away. Homesickness is something that I can't seem to escape. When you've called as many places home as I have, not a single one truly feels like it's home.
Yuragi - I Liked You Through the Veil
|
LyricsYou relied on me
Believed this world, believed the universe
I can't see your way
The world is cruel, and it just gets worse
I think I loved only your outside Like I adored a flower, and so the night
World is heavenly
Only the bright side is what I sail
I can trust only you
Because I liked you through the veil
Deep down inside my heart
You'll keep living through my feeling
Deep down inside my heart
You'll keep living partially
We can't change what we went through
But you will be my preserved bloom
Because I loved you through the veil
In the best place of my heart
You'll keep shining shining on
Because I loved you through the veil

MIZ BULGE AREA SEASON 9 • EPISODE 2 Hometown Heroes
Pasha Hristova 'Edna balgarska roza' 'One Bulgarian rose'
There are some videos of the song on YouTube but they are of bad quality, as the song is quite old. I would recommend you to listen to it on Spotify.
So... I am from Sofia. You may think that finding a good song from Sofia (or anywhere else in Bulgaria) would be easy but NO. Which is why for this week I am willing to take what I perceive as a minor risk in sending something slightly out of the box.
Pasha Hristova, born in 1946, in the outskirts of Sofia, namely the beautiful neighbourhood of Knyazhevo, is a renowned Bulgarian singer famous for her powerful voice and touching lyrics. One of her most iconic songs is "Edna balgarska roza" ("One Bulgarian Rose"), which has become a symbol of Bulgarian national pride. The song was first performed by Hristova in 1970 and quickly became a beloved anthem in Bulgaria. Its lyrics celebrate the beauty and simplicity of the Bulgarian rose, metaphorically representing the essence of Bulgaria and the spirit its people. The lyrics express a warm and heartfelt welcome to a foreign visitor, showcasing the spirit of Bulgarian hospitality and pride.
And as somebody who has been living abroad for four years now, this song is especially heart-warming. Knowing that our country is riddled with problems and the fact that I will probably not return back home, hearing this song further amplifies the feeling of homesickness.
Fun fact: Bulgaria is the world's largest producer of rose oil, which is widely used in the cosmetic industry.
| Good evening, my young friend Good evening, buddy You're wellcome in our town You're wellcome in Bulgaria Take, in this good day, A Bulgarian rose from me Let it tell you with it's fragrant voice About the Balkan, about all of us
And when, my young friend And when, buddy You leave our town You leave Bulgaria Take, in that good day, A Bulgarian rose from me Let it remind you with it's fragrant voice About the Balkan, about sea the and about all of us
And don't forget - even for a day, This Bulgarian rose... and me Let it rememind you - with it's fragrant voice, About the Balkan, about the sea and about all of us About all of us, all of us...

Season 9 - Episode 2 Tứ Phủ (Four Palaces) by Hoàng Thùy Linh
I'm from Hanoi, which is the cultural capital of Vietnam. For this challenge, I've decided to present a Hanoi-based artist, Hoang Thuy Linh. Hoang Thuy Linh is one of the rare artists who thoroughly incorporates unique forms of folk belief into her music.
My choices from one of her songs is "Tứ Phủ" (Four Palaces), released in 2019. The song is a unique blend of traditional Vietnamese folk elements and modern electronic beats, creating a captivating and energetic sound.
The reason why Tứ Phủ was chosen because first, the song has strong element of the worshipping of mother goddesses (Đạo Mẫu), which is one of the most important key aspects in Hanoian folk belief. Our folk beliefs have a long history, formed and developed on the foundation of goddess worship. Over time, the belief in worshiping the Mother Goddess in Vietnam and Hanoi has developed into the belief in worshiping the Four Palaces - which is the title of the songs. "Four Palaces" is the concept and perception of the ancient Vietnamese people about the universe and the world. "Four Palaces" includes Thien Phu, Dia Phu, Thoai Phu and Nhac Phu respectively corresponding to 4 regions: Heaven, Earth, Water and Forest. The practice of the Vietnamese belief in worshiping the Mother Goddess has been recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage in 2016.
Hoang Thuy Linh draws inspiration from the religion. In the music video, Hoang Thuy Linh's character design is inspired by Cô Bơ, a deity in the Four Palaces to protect children and offer blessings. According to legend, she was a beautiful, modest, and talented girl who helped the Le Dynasty king during the resistance war against foreign invaders. When saying goodbye, the king promised to return the favor and made her his concubine. Because of this promise, until she passed away and returned to heaven, she remained loyal and faithful. The song explores themes of of spiritual journey, resilience, and female empowerment, while staying true to the traditional music and dance styles associated with the "Tứ Phủ" tradition.
The song is a piece that represent a part of our cultural tapestry and I felt very proud of my city's culture with this song.

TRANSLATION
I trembled holding the broken gem, breaking my heart Who embroidered this wild wild hill? Withered peach blossom as many lives as I have been exiled Life is bumpy like an unstable boat of love Bury myself into the sacred place Amitabha...
My life was tormented when he betrayed my love Even heaven might not understand
Ah a a a a a My tears immersed in the Ninth Heaven Ah a a a a a Longed for you in the middle of life for thousands of years Here in the wilderness, I wait for an eternity I blame my graceless destiny
Cloud and water will not drift back to their roots Like you didn't come to my lonely life And I had known the taste of sadness The day I picked up from the old love story Long soliloquies all alone at night Amitabha...
You are passionately building great dreams way far from me Rush away and let me live in oblivion
Ah a a a a a My tears immersed in the Ninth Heaven Ah a a a a a Longed for you in the middle of life for thousands of years Here in the wilderness, I wait for an eternity
I'm from the majestic mountains, you're from the plain All day alone, long night of silence You come into the deep forest and leave me behind Sadness called my name but you're not here yet My hair is flying high in the air The water doesn't return to the source The water leaves the clouds drifting You're not coming back to me You're leaving in a hurry
Let my tears immersed in the Ninth Heaven Bowing my head to my own swaying story I blame nothing but our without-graces destiny

MEL A TONIN S9 E2: Hometown Heroes Song: Nothing Lasts Forever Artist: DYLAN
For this first episode, I have chosen "Nothing Lasts Forever" by DYLAN. For a county with ~760K people, the arts scene is lacking in Suffolk, with no real major arts hub or even city at all within the county. With Ed Sheeran being the most known artist from Suffolk (which is an auto ELIM) I have delved more into our scene and realised that the upcoming DYLAN, is from Bures, a village on the Suffolk-Essex Border. I used to travel through Bures to visit family, so I know the area.
The reason I have chosen "Nothing Lasts Forever" is that whilst it does delve mainly into relationships on a love basis I interpret in a different way. Whilst Suffolk has been my home for the past 20 years (discounting uni) and I identify myself as being from the county, I know that it is not my forever place. There is no real future for me here and I know if I want to continue to be challenged in life, I have to move away before I get stuck here. So whilst Suffolk is an amazing place to grow up in, I cannot wait to leave so my time here is running out.
Plus, with housing demands in the area new homes and infrastructure are being built, the places I know are being developed further. Whilst this is obviously a good thing, I know that the Suffolk I knew growing up is changing, again hitting the idea that "nothing lasts forever".
It feels rare to see someone from Suffolk being successful, it being an overlooked area of England compared to the much larger cities and regions of the UK. We have a reputation of being Farmers who just don't leave the county (which I mean, the shoe does fit) so seeing DYLAN succeeding is nice to see and gives hope for myself. This is just a good girlbop that is very much the sound of the new generation of Solo Female English Singer/Songwriters so I found it fitting for this theme.
Lyrics: [Verse 1]
You say that you care about me
Calm down, it's been under two weeks
Stop tryna fix whatever you think you see
When you see nothing at all
You fell off your chair when I said
That I wanted to kiss all your friends
But life’s short, and ultimately everything ends
So I don't care anymore
[Pre-Chorus]
You think that we're falling into love
But I’m not (I'm not), so get up (Get up)
[Chorus]
Don't be so dramatic
Come on, get it together
When you gonna figure out
That nothing ever lasts forever, forever, forever
Hopelessly romantic
But you're not very clevеr
When you gonna figure out
That nothing evеr lasts forever, forever, forever
[Verse 2]
Blind drunk and back to your place
Sober up from the look on your face
As you try and work out my emotional state
When there is nothing at all

Phaedra Phoenix Season 9: Episode 2 - Hometown Heroes
I live somewhere in between Southampton and the New Forest (both in Hampshire), one of the country's most recent national parks, gaining its status in 2005. Growing up and currently living in this area, I found there was a variety of locations within an easy reach, such as the forest, beach (due to living near the south coast) and the city and I feel lucky having easy access all of these locations. I feel so lucky being so connected to all kinds of nature and wildlife within this area, there is an incredible range of biodiversity in the area. Growing up and occasionally now, I go on plenty of walks around the New Forest and nearby beaches and I find it very invigorating.
For this theme, I have decided to choose the Lymington-born singer, Birdy, with her energetic synthpop and pop rock song, "Paradise Calling". Having visited the town several times, Lymington is a beautiful coastal town located in the south of the New Forest, especially during the summer. It is most known for its sailing, high street, port and its cobbled streets. It also has a direct ferry link to Yarmouth in the Isle of Wight. I find this song really fits the theme of 'Hometown Heroes', as she is definitely one of my musical hometown heroes, due to her being one of the biggest musicians to come from the New Forest within recent years. Additionally I am immensely proud of Birdy's success as an artist, especially as I know people who went to school with her. Secondly, as I mentioned in the first paragraph, the area has so many locations within an easy reach and consequently making the New Forest the 'Paradise Calling' for some people. When I moved to this area, my parents thought the area was their 'Paradise Calling', due to both growing up in the city (Southampton) and was impressed by the scenic landscapes. I understand the artist choice may be fairly unoriginal but I feel like she mostly encapsulates this theme out of all of my contending hometown heroes. Despite appreciating the locality of wide range of locations in the area, I have lived in the New Forest for like 20 something years now and currently looking for my 'Paradise Calling' to move out of the region and seek new opportunities while still living fairly close by so I can still visit friends and family etc.
Lyrics:
Riding high When I was your star Mmm Lightning strike Right at the heart Mmm Chorus Paradise calling All I ever wanted is Something to believe in Something to believe in Both eyes wide open So high still falling If you could only feel it If you could only feel Our love
Light us up Open the door We could find the way out the dark This could be the spark You don’t know the ways of the heart This could be the start
Paradise calling All I ever wanted is Something to believe in Something to believe in Both eyes wide open So high still falling If you could only feel it If you could only feel Our love Middle We could find the way out the dark The dark You don’t know the ways of the heart The heart We could find the way out the dark The dark You don’t know the ways of the heart This could be the start
Paradise calling All I ever wanted is Something to believe in Something to believe in Both eyes wide open So high still falling If you could only feel it If you could only feel Our love Our love Our love Our love

LADY WESTMINSTER - EPISODE 2
Bahar ZAMAN
As you may know, I have the "privilege" to claim both Germany and Switzerland as my home countries. In Switzerland my home town would be a small village somewhere near Basel whose best music act is the local orchestra. Therefore I have decided to go with the city that is my current residence and which has been my primary home town for most of my life: Freiburg im Breisgau.
Freiburg is famous for three things: having the image of a "green city", having good public transport, and having a university that has served as a place of activity to some of the worst people Germany was able to come up with throughout its history. Music, however, is not really something Freiburg is known for. Or at least that was the case until the 2000s when two one-hit wonders firmly put their stamp on the city and put its musical scene on the map. For this challenge I have therefore decided to select one of these two one-hit wonders, Bahar Kizil. The Germans among us might recognize that name quite quickly but for the rest of the people, Bahar is probably more known by the girl group of which she was a part during most of the 2000s: Monrose. A name familiar to most all Germans under the age of 30 who had the pleasure to listen to the absolute serve and banger that was and still is "Hot Summer". After Monrose split in 2011, Bahar moved back to her hometown Freiburg and has continued to make music ever since. The song I have selected is her 2021 single "ZAMAN". Sung in both English and Turkish, ZAMAN represents Bahar's German and Turkish identities coming together to form one song. The song and its music video also represent the city of Freiburg very well. Freiburg has been the home of a large Turkish diaspora that has shaped and continues to shape the city to this day. Freiburg has also curated the image of a "liberal island", with the city and the people of the city being very engaged with LGBTQ+ and minority rights. - Lyrics - can be found on Spotify Premium, a service for which my government could not locate sufficient funds after having girlbossed too close to the sun with our economic policies and subsequently crashing the economy.
