My heart goes out to all our Ukrainian forumers and in general, Ukrainian people too. I hope you stay safe and strong in these hard times. If there is anything we can do, please let us know, we would be more than happy to listen to you and do whatever necessary in our capacities.
In general, the recent years have seen increasing fragility in the (geo)political situation in the post-Soviet region: various anti-authoritarian protests (particularly, in Belarus and Kazakhstan), Nagorno-Karabakh war, border disputes in Central Asia, the invasion of Ukraine, among many others. These experiences have been particularly intense and mentally draining for all of us, often to the extent we have unconsciously normalized violence, insecurity and fear as a daily part of our lives. Indeed, watching Putin's "de-nazification" speech with the announcement of "special military operation" in Ukraine this morning instantly reminded me of the horrible days of 2020 when I could not sleep and eat properly, and panic constantly over our future. In the case of ongoing invasion, the situation is even much more different and difficult: Ukraine has to confront a regional expansionist power with a maniacal president as its head. Though there are reports of sporadic anti-war protests in Russia (further protests are planned too), they remain peripheral in comparison with an authoritarian government with significantly more resources. I can not imagine what ordinary people in Ukraine, who are directly affected by this violence, are exposed to in this context.
I therefore send my warmth and prayers, but also solidarity for the people of Ukraine. We not only have a shared colonial past, but also influenced by it, today's struggles, which are interconnected. I hope together we will be able to overcome these dark days with the brighter ones, and see Ukrainian people living happily and prospering despite everything. |

Putin's mind lives in a dystopian world where USSR still exists and his plan is to reproduce in Ukraine more or less what happened in Hungary in 1956 and in Czechoslovakia in 1968. But apparently he forgot that a similar attempt in Afghanistan in 1979 resulted in a long and costful war that eventually led to a complete failure.

At present, they need our material support more than ever. I have just received an email from the UNHCR which includes a link to donation page to provide urgently needed relief to ordinary people forced to flee their homes.
