Second damper in a row for Engeos
After the stunning 9-0 loss against Neptune in the semi-final, the Engeosians also didn’t manage to beat their opponent in the 3rd place play-off, the United States of Flowers: 2-0.
The first half was straightforward boring, or at least the regular playtime: the only event actually worth one’s while happened in the first minute of overtime as a haphazard shot by UsoF striker Jeffrey Gomez hit the goalpost and rebounded into the field, only to be kicked back - between the goalposts, this time - by Gomez’ teammate Joey Figueroa.
The second half also took some time to start up, as the first excitement appeared in the 56th minute: a direct free kick by Engeos defender Mateusz Trybski missed the USoF gate by just an inch, which was followed by a counterattack by the United States, with Dexter McKinney’s attempt at goal ending up on the fists of Norbert Parto, the Engeosian goalkeeper.
In the 70th minute, the Engeosian coach Lech Anioła realized they were running out of time, and substituted three of his players all at once: Krystian Kilian was replaced by Joseph Vana, Gabriel Mitra took up Stanislovas Monetų’s position, and Tomasz Hałka had to move over in favour of Stefan Čysty. The changes didn’t have the desired effect, though. Quite the opposite: in the 76th minute, Gomez scored out of a solo action, putting the United States further in control.
This was the point of no return for the Engeosians: they set everything at the stake to make one goal at least, maybe even two or three, during the last quarter of an hour of the game. The United States were forced to bend, but managed not to break: their defence was just strong enough to drive off the Engeosian attacks. They were really close, though, in the 88th minute, when USoF midfielder Bryant Hart ran into McKinney, who wasn’t in possession at that moment, inside the USoF penalty area. By accident, Hart alleged, but referee Ruben Slim decided to give him a yellow card and the Engeosians a penalty kick. Unfortunately, Aleks Komandiri, who was about to take the kick, was distracted by USoF supporters igniting firework in the tribune in front of him, and he shot several feet too high. The United States go home with a bronze medal, while the Engeosians leave Antalorgia deceived.
