What an afternoon I was watching. I watched the
US broadcast on Logo TV, and the commentators were so much better than last year, and we actually managed to see every single second of it, interval acts included. I hope we get the same commentators next year.
Now, on with my thoughts, from the last place to the winner.
I thought it was nice, but it was clearly the weakest. I think a younger demographic saved this from getting nul points. Last place deserved.
This should've been last place, but congrats on not coming last for a third year in a row. Now get your sh*t together!
The best rock song because it's the only rock song. Ukraine was certainly not looking for a win again. I'm sad it's in the bottom three though.
He kicked off the show pretty well, but then he got forgotten. Should've placed higher.
Same as Israel, but I think the Polish diaspora helped it get more points.
It was still cool, but I'm indifferent with their result. I'm glad they got booed for giving 24 points to Greece though.
Having to perform between Italy and Portugal basically meant this was expendable, especially since it barely qualified. I didn't care for this.
She definitely improved her vocals for the final, but not enough for a good result. Glad they got booed for giving 24 to Cyprus. Meh.
UNDERRATED! WTF? She was fierce and powerful. Her vocals were amazing. The staging was brilliant. Whatever.
That kiss!
I'm glad that they get to perform in the final in their native language. Many blessings for their future.
Okay, that
from the televote was painful. Totally undeserved. Bless the juries sometimes.
UNDERRATED! Well, it's their best result since 2011, so it's progress. At least they didn't place in the bottom. Still the best staging this year.
I expected this to place in the middle, so 14th is totally fine by me.
I can't believe this placed 13th. The ex-Yugoslav voting block definitely helped. I don't mind them finishing in the middle. It was a memorable.
Coming 10th in the televote was a surprise, but I'm glad France is starting to step it up. I hope to see more amazing French songs in the future.
They put their hearts and souls in that performance. I'm glad they placed 11th for the second year in the row.
YES! I'm so glad this placed in the top 10. It's contemporary, catchy, and radio-friendly. The juries were right on this one. This will be playing on my playlist a lot for the rest of the year.
So... even if they got 2 points (I laughed) from the televote, they still placed in 9th. No. Just no. Clearly, the European public is getting tired of Australia, and so am I. I hope they get the Asian version up and going so that Australia can participate there and leave ESC.
The emotion, the story, and the beauty of this song is unparalleled. Clearly, the televote responded as they saved it from flopping. I'm glad the public felt the song and understood its message. Congrats on 8th place!
I knew it would do well based on odds, but seventh place is MUCH higher than I expected. I think the televote was very responsive to the interesting combination of rap, yodel, and pop. Romania has found their niche in sending over the top acts.
Ouch! As much as the audience loved it, I'm going to blame it partly the running order for their 6th place finish. I think the main reason they also lost is because people hyped this up too early, so by the time the Grand Final came, people got tired of it. It's the only reason I can come up with for Italy not doing as well as expected. I'm glad that Italy is continuing their consistency in the top 10 though. Better luck next year!
Can I say overrated? This is Sweden's sixth time in the top 5 this decade, and this year, I don't think it's deserved. Just one spot lower, and I would have been happy. They also robbed Italy of a top 5 place. I can't go on about Sweden anymore.
My faith was restored watching her performance. Her confidence on stage peaked at the right time. The audience was loving it, and I grew to love the staging. Her song is also making a lot of money. It's gone back up to one of my favorites post-show. Very please that they're in the top 10 for the third consecutive year.
The surprise of the night. I knew the televote would love this, but I wasn't sure how the juries would respond, and they responded pretty well to my surprise. The performance was all sorts of fun, especially with Epic Sax Guy in it. The wedding concept was brilliant, the clothing transformations by the backing singers were flawless, and the choreography was simple and effective. The song was also a polished club beat. Everything was in their favor. Congratulations to Moldova on their best result yet.
Amazing and passionate voice with minimal staging. When Bulgaria sends final-worthy entries, they send AMAZING final-worthy entries. I'm sure if Bulgaria keeps this up, they'll continue to place in the top 5 like Sweden, but in a more deserving way.
And now, we've come to our winner.
I'M SO HAPPY FOR THEM!!! After flopping for over 50 years, they finally win! Of all the songs to win with, it was one that was simple, heartfelt, passionate, and genuinely all about the song. They didn't need to worry about rehearsals since the staging was so simple. It had "nostalgia" written all over it, a huge contrast against the modernity of the other entries. I had never thought Portugal could ever win Eurovision because it sits in the far western reaches of Europe, but if Portugal can win, any country can. It just takes a lot of time, patience, and the right song in the right time. Finally, Portugal wins, and we're going west next year! See you all in Portugal in 2018!
Thoughts about the show:
- The hosts were awkward in the best ways possible.
- The interval acts were briliant. Ruslana
ONUKA
Jamala
Verka
Even Mans
- You know an event is popular if someone tries to do a stage invasion. It was great that Jamala stayed calm during her performance.
- The new way to present the results is really brilliant. It kept everyone on their feet until the last minute, unlike in 2012 when we knew Euphoria won halfway through the results. Definitely the most effective voting system especially for a massive audience.
Other thoughts.
- All the non-English songs this year qualified to the final. Talk about celebrating diversity.
- Eurovision is becoming more competitive each year. A lot of countries are sending innovative and standout songs. Of course, some will not be everyone's taste, but that's the beauty of Eurovision. All kinds of music gets exposed, so I hope next year will be just as exciting.
