FRANCE - OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT Something extremely serious is happening in this contest, serious enough to justify this announcement. As you remember, on 25th of May, it was announced that France would be represented by Mireille Mathieu with Bravo, tu as gagnรฉ, her cover from The winner takes it all. Some of you know that this song was planned a long time ago, and could already have been selected by France several editions ago (we won't enter into the details, that is not the subject). Between the 25th of May and the 30th at 10pm, when the submissions were closed, there was no reaction about the French choice. But at 11:19 pm the French delegation received a message from the organisation of the contest, asking to change the entry, because Croatia used a cover of The winner takes it all in Themed WWW Song Contest.
The answer of France was that:
1) The rules as they appeared during the confirmation period were these:
As you can see, Themed WWW Song Contest didn't appear anywhere. You can also see that it is exactly the same now for the main contest:
The only official rule that existed was that an entry of WWWSC or Retro WWWSC wasn't allowed for Themed WWWSC.
2) The confirmation was already closed. That is a common rule in many contests on this forum: if an infringment of a rule is discovered after the deadline, the song is not disqualified and considered as legit. And we were in a case where there was no infringement of any rule.
3) Changing the French entry after the deadline would be a huge disavantadge in the votes since other delegations would have much less time to discover the new entry. And after the huge disadvantage of the rules of the 70th edition, that was clearly not acceptable.
4) The choice of the French entry was not made on purpose, for a simple reason: the French delegation of Retro WWWSC had absolutely no clue of the Croatian entry of Themed WWWSC (and by the way, how could we have seen it, as the Croatian entries are never posted in the threads?). Again, this entry was on the French list a long time ago, and was finally picked before the 70th edition in case of the theme of the edition would have been "covers" - more exactly, this was the second choice of France, but we will explain why in a few editions.
It seems that this answer wasn't understood because we just received a second message, with an ultimatum: or the French entry is changed, or France would be excluded from this edition. Additionally, we saw that the rules have just been changed - AFTER the end of the confirmation period. So the intention of the organisation of the contest is quite clear: everything is made in the purpose of disqualifying the French entry.
We never saw in any contest a modification of a rule after the end of the confirmation period with the clear intention of disqualifying an entry. So the answer of the French delegation is absolutely clear: NO, WE WON'T CHANGE OUR ENTRY. For all the reasons already explained, and because that method is deeply unfair.
Now we have several options:
1) France is allowed to compete and every delegation would vote have to find its own answer to the question: is the French entry legit? If they think that the answer is "no", they will simply give to France.
2) A reasonable compensation is offered to the French delegation and France would withdraw from this edition. That would be a pity because we think that a lot of delegations were happy to see this entry in competition.
3) France is disqualified from the contest. That would be a pity for the whole contest, because we never saw such a decision taken in any other contest.
