Tunisia confirms!
Today, Tunisian broadcaster Télévision Tunisienne officially confirmed Tunisia's participation in the upcoming 42nd edition of the Northvision Song Contest, which is set to be hosted in Portugal. This announcement comes in the wake of Tunisia's non-qualification in the first semi-final of the latest edition, where the song "Third Lung," performed by the Tunisian brother-sister musical duo Noor and Selim Arjoun, secured 18th place with 71 points. This outcome marks the country's first non-qualification since the 38th edition and its lowest result since the 32nd edition when it also claimed 18th place in its semi-final. Moreover, due to the country's bottom-five finish in its semi-final last edition, Tunisia is obligated to participate in the pre-qualification round for the upcoming edition. Despite this, the broadcaster has affirmed its intent to participate in the next Northvision edition.
However, due to the country's mandatory participation in the pre-qualification round, Télévision Tunisienne has anticipated relatively lower viewership figures compared to recent editions. Consequently, the broadcaster's Board of Supervisors has allocated a reduced budget for the country's participation—significantly less than in previous editions. This budget reduction has prompted changes in the country's method of selection.
It has been announced that the Maghrebi Music Fest, which served as the joint national selection for participating North African countries in the past two editions, will not continue as the selection method for Tunisia this edition. Due to the budget constraints, Tunisia is unable to contribute its share to fund the festival financially. Therefore, it has been mutually agreed upon by the broadcasters of Morocco, Egypt, and Tunisia that the festival will be temporarily paused. However, Télévision Tunisienne has emphasized that this is a temporary measure, expressing optimism that the festival will resume next edition if it can secure the appropriate funding.
For the upcoming edition, Tunisia will employ an internal selection process, marking the first time since the 37th edition. Early reports suggest that a talent from the Tunisian diaspora is likely to be chosen, though nothing has been confirmed. More information is expected to be released shortly.
