flagusof United States of Flowers vs. flagantalorgia AntalorgiaGroup D *** Monday 4 May 18.00 *** Friends Arena, flagrainbowislands Vikerkaar *** Referee: flagarabiyyah Sophie Hille flagusof Sel vs. flagantalorgia @slotermayer37 The United States of Flowers, winners of the Winter bronze medal and already on their way to qualification, versus Antalorgia, the botchers who lost each and every match they played and never scored… No surprise the latters were tense as heck while entering the field, and the States used quite a few backup players. But that combination turned out to be deadly, as in the fifth minute already, Antalorgia striker Arseny Zemtsov broke through on the left flank, lobbed the ball over the States’ defence to his companion Gregor Kalash-Nikov, who came to face goalkeeper Vincent Henderson, but quickly returned the ball to Zemtsov, who had run on and could easily kick the ball into the empty goal, marking the first ever goal in any World Cup by Antalorgia. The States were shaken awake, and initiated a counteroffensive. Although it took them a while to break through thanks to the enthusiastic Antalorgian defence, the score was levelled in the 26th minute through an inventive shot from a narrow angle by Dexter McKinney, and the States even took the lead in the 53rd through Ted Robertson’s long-distance shot which was headed into the Antalorgian gate by Sam Singleton. The Antalorgians didn’t want to let triumph slip through their fingers once more, and so they opened fire on the States’ players, with two yellow cards as a consequence. Yet in the 72nd minute, it wasn’t an Antalorgian, but a States’ player who turned the match around: Lavrenty Dyatlov was putting Oliver Jefferson under pressure, who passed the ball back to Henderson. Unfortunately, the pass had been given with a little too much force, whereby Henderson missed. Now the Antalorgians went all out, with victory within reach, and in the 77th minute, Zemtsov took a corner kick, Henderson tried to catch it but missed, and Kalash-Nikov made use of the great opportunity. The States tried a final offensive in order to arrange a tie in the nick of time through some risky actions, but goalkeeper Miroslav Krazimyov stood his ground.

flagerezinhalla Erezin Halla vs. flagluir Luir-LandodiosGroup D *** Monday 4 May 21.00 *** Sateenkari Stadium, flagrainbowislands Sateenkari *** Referee: flagsivania Benjamin Townsend flagerezinhalla Llemian vs. flagluir LuiriIn great contrast with the earlier match of the evening, Erezin Halla vs. Luir-Landodios wasn’t exactly sight for sore eyes, rather the opposite: both teams made a lazy impression, didn’t create any real chances, lost the ball every other five seconds… The only interesting event in the first half was propably Erezin midfielders Billy Harrigan and Owen Yew running into each other in an attempt to collect the ball, Luir striker Matthew Fantistiska picking it up instead, running towards Erezin goalkeeper Harry Bonntroop and passing the ball on to the approaching Taran Seroi, who couldn’t do anything but shoot it straight into the goal. The second half was fairly boring, too, but during the last twenty minutes there was a revival, with four fresh and enthusiastic substitutes (two on each side) initiating offensives and counteroffensives. Chances, however, only appeared in the last five minutes, such as the 88th, which saw Fantistiska shooting the ball at the crossbar, the left goalpost, the right goalpost and Bonntroop’s gloves respectively.

flagdasmia Dasmia vs. flagsouthkordom South KordomGroup A *** Tuesday 5 May 18.00 *** Arconbé Stadium, flagrainbowislands Arconbé *** Referee: flagmugsyria William Mulligan flagdasmia Blandine vs. flagsouthkordom MattWith Dasmia already being eliminated and South Kordom already through to the quarter-finals, their mutual match wasn’t exactly attractive to the great public - only about 6,000 spectators were counted. Dasmia came up with a fairly weak line-up, for they had nothing to lose or win anyway. South Kordom also let their strongest players have a little rest, but still had their best defenders on the field, as they had to tie or win in order to guarantee the first place in Group A. Nothing much happened during the first hour, with Dasmia striker and captain John Merriley being shown a yellow card in the 6th minute for showing the finger to the whistling Dasmian audience, and the occasional outbreak from either one of the sides ending up in failure. But in the 61st minute, the game started becoming more interesting as Dasmia defender Michael Ramko brought down Kordom midfielder Park Jae-Seng fiercely and received a yellow card for that. Both teams’ managers then started bringing in fresh and combative substitutes, which augmented the tension even more. The next yellow card came in the 73rd minute, once again for Dasmia, but now for midfielder Thomas Thorne, who tackled Kordom midfielder Filip Jésus, who got injured, ruthlessly, which calmed both sides down a bit. After the fourth Dasmian yellow card of the game, for midfielder Tucker Evans for an overreaction to Benedict Asbjörn pushing him out of possession, the Dasmians initiated a final offensive, which ultimately succeeded in the last second of the game, with striker Trevor Horton lobbing the ball perfectly over the head of goalkeeper Alexander Smith and into the Kordanese goal.

flagescogrecia Escogrecia vs. flagrainbowislands Rainbow IslandsGroup A *** Tuesday 5 May 21.00 *** Beach Stadium, flagrainbowislands Kanevedenn *** Referee: flagjaponicana Wang Vansen flagescogrecia Apostolis vs. flagrainbowislands JulianAn exciting climax of Group A: only the winner of the very last match, Escogrecia vs. the Rainbow Islands would gain the right to join South Kordom in the quarter-finals. Strong line-ups? Check. Determination on both sides? Check. Excitement? Quite a bit. The Rainbow Islands, assisted by their noisy audience, dominated the match all the way until the final whistle. It was a shame they often squandered their chances when entering the Escogrecian penalty area - all honour to the Escogrecian defence and goalkeeper! - because it could easily have been 0-7 at half-time. Instead, it was only 0-2, through Thomas Gray’s 30-metre shot and Vincent Thatcher’s long-distance cross-pass being headed into the goal by Gray. The Islands even extended their lead to 0-3 in the 58th minute, as Escogrecia defender Sean Macler accidentally shot the ball into the feet of Thomas Highberg, who easily by-passed goalkeeper Oonagh Markus and scored. Highberg scored another two times in the twenty minutes that followed, but unfortunately, both goals were rejected by the referee for offside. Escogrecia finally gave up, and accepted the Islands ‘stealing’ their ticket to the knock-out stage.
