BELGIUM CONFIRMS!

Belgium's participation in the thirty-fifth North Vision Song Contest has just been officially confirmed. RTBF & VRT launched their schedule for 2021 and with it, it has been confirmed that the North Vision Song Contest will once again be on the Belgian television screens. The country will once again use Belfestival to select their entry for the forthcoming edition set to be held in Russia. The national selection, however, will go back to the general format with only one, final round being held. 10 acts from across the country will compete for the golden ticket and a chance to represent their homeland in the grand final. Last edition, Maya's Moving Castle took Europe by storm with a mesmerising performance and eventually ended up in the fourth place. With that result, Belgium achieved something that may have sounded insane some months ago - their third consecutive top ten placement.

Belgium started to build on the momentum of the positive cooperation between the Flemish and Walloon broadcasters. The country stuck to their new national selection format, allowing talented singers from across the nation to fight for the right of representing Belgium in the biggest televised music competition. The Western European country turned their fates around from serial non-qualifications to achieving record-breaking finishes. The local broadcasters are seemingly perfectly happy with the current selection format now and both of them are eager to continue the cooperation in the following editions. After all, a succesfull national selection format can really change a nation's fortunes and transform a country from an also-ran to a powerhouse.

We have experienced a run of so many consecutive non-qualifications, What has been happening lately seems like an otherworldly experience. I am extremely proud to say that North Vision gained in importance here and became a really exclusive brand. How does a nation manage to bounce back from a poor run of results? It was all about making a change in the selection process and perhaps taking a bit more control in proceedings to steer the ship back onto the right tracks.

SWEDEN CONFIRMS PARTICIPATION! 10 January 2021. The Swedish Head of Delegation responsible for the North Vision Song Contest of SVT, Jan Björkman, has just confirmed that the nation will be present at the thirty-fifth edition of the contest. FANTASIFESTIVALEN WILL BE HELD! Fantasifestivalen 35 will be held in order to select the next Swedish entrant. Once again an amount of 32 songs will compete in the selection. The Head of Delegation, Jan Björkman, stated the following: "Even though we have not been achieving a top ten placement for the previous four editions, it is certainly inappropriate to not call the recent Swedish history in the contest a success. We feel delighted to keep up a tremendous qualification streak, especially with unpredictable and sonically daring entries, which the General Public are not used to hear from Sweden. To continue with the success, we will undoubtedly organise another edition of the traditional Swedish selection, Fantasifestivalen to select the successor of Pale Honey. A record amount of 3,028 submissions have been received and evaluated by a professional music jury in order to choose the thirty-two final entrants for the national competition. France will be present in the 35th edition!

France Télévisions has officially confirmed the French participation for the upcoming 35th edition, after a succesful debut edition for the new Head of Delegation. Head of Delegation Jean Richard looks back proudly of what they have achieved in Slovakia.

Destination Northvision will once again be the way France will select the French entry to represent the country in Russia. 10 French hopeful acts are awaiting their moment of fame on the stage. News surrounding the national selection can be found here.

France Télévisions and it's Head of Delegation commented on the 34th results:

"We are extremely proud of what Marie-Mai and France Télévisions team have achieved in Slovakia. Managing to escape both the pre-qualification round and semis is all what we wanted and the fact we got to be 15th out of 26 is just the cherry on top. We are excited for what awaits us in Russia, but all we know it that we are going to bring it once again."

Lebanon to participate!

Azure Ryder's tenth place in the grand final of the thirty-fourth North Vision Song Contest in Bratislava may have come as a surprise to many both in and outside of Lebanon, but LBC is keen to build on the positive reaction to her entry 'Stronger' and, as such, has confirmed the participation of  Lebanon in the upcoming thirty-fifth edition of the contest, which is due to be held in Russia.

« Azure Ryder's tenth place in Slovakia was an incredibly positive surprise, and we were delighted to see her song being so well received, especially by the international juries. Viewer engagement has begun to pick up again following a noticeable dip in the thirty-third edition and, consequently, we see no reason to not continue participating and to continue carving Lebanon's path in the contest. »

The launch of the revised selection format, mahrajan al’aghnia, in the previous edition helped to revitalise interest in the contest in Lebanon. Having held discussions with a number of the international sponsors who brought the selection to life in the thirty-fourth edition, LBC has confirmed that it will be renewed for a second edition and hence the thirtieth Lebanese entry for the contest will be selected nationally.


Submissions for the upcoming edition are already open, with artists invited to submit their potential songs to LBC and, like in the previous edition, six songs proceeding to the national final. As always, Northfans are busy speculating which artists may be seen, and a number of big names, including Mashrou' Leila and a number of former participants, have been circulating. However, the Head of Delegation stated that "new and undiscovered talent should not feel intimidated by rumours".

Lebanon’s NVSC journey made the best possible start as Nicole Saba won for the country on their debut in the fifth edition with 'Hafdal Ahlam', bringing the contest to Beirut for the sixth edition and starting a (to this day unmatched) three-edition qualification streak. The country’s results from then on were rather turbulent, including two four-edition streaks of non-qualifications, although Myriam Fares achieved Lebanon’s second best result with 'Nifsi Aoulhalak' in the fourteenth edition - second place.

A new delegation stepped in for the twenty-fourth edition, bringing Lebanon back to the final with Nelly Makdessy’s 'Kunt Atmanna' in Vienna, and achieving three top ten results for the country (with 'Call Me a Stranger', '22' and 'Dear Jealousy') before passing the baton on to the current delegation team for the thirty-fourth edition onwards, returning to the final - and to the top ten - with Azure Ryder's 'Stronger'.

FAROESE ENTRY HAS BEEN CHOSEN

ENTRY TO BE REVEALED 15 FEBRUARY

KVF has just announced in an online press conference that the Faroese entry for the North Vision Song Contest #35 has been officially chosen. 58 entries had been submitted to KVF over the time period of 3 weeks. Following an internal selection format with a jury consisting of Faroese music industry representatives, the song choices have been narrowed down to 4 songs. On 12 January, the broadcaster's committee had agreed on the official entry and submitted it to the North Broadcasting Union.

The Faroese entrant and song will be presented on 15 February 2021.
