Spain confirms its participation!
España estará presente en Italia
Madrid, 26 April 2021
The Spanish broadcaster RTVE arranged a press conference at Madrid's popular Teatro Real earlier today. After a good 6th place finish in the 35th edition, and thus a place in the automatic qualifier zone, Spanish fans across the country were ecstatic, as it had been nearly 8 editions since the country had placed this high. It was confirmed at the meeting that the country will participate in the upcoming edition in Italy! The team's feelings toward the overall results of previous editions, entry selection plans for the 36th edition, and opinions on the international acts featured in the newly revised national selection concept - españax - were all discussed in the head of delegation's speech.

"españax: selección para nvsc" • was the latest concept introduced by the delegation after a series of disappointing results with the system used before, Festival Ibérico. This selection, this time only featuring Spanish acts, strived to achieve better placements in the contest and introduce more diverse and unique acts from all around the country. It was actually a success! It received unwavering support from all over Europe when its first edition was launched for the 35th edition, which was held in Russia. Its premiere ratings hit an all-time high of 11.2 million viewers during the winner's ( Barrunto) performance, and that entry went on to win the competition and finish in the Top 6 at the final in Sankt Petersburg. So, the delegation once again confirmed that the selection format will be use to determine its act for the final in the 36th edition in Italy!
One major topic discussed in the delegation meeting was on the inclusion of "foreign acts" in the selection. Despite having a really passionate bunch of talented artists who want to take place in the selection, one spot is normally given to a foreign act that isn't necessarily Spanish but still wants to have a chance to represent the country in the North Vision Song Contest. For the past two editions, a foreign act has won a selection that Spain organizes. This resulted in having less artists who are interested in participating in españax, and a possible negative reaction to the nation always opting to send foreign acts was impossible to ignore. Therefore, an action has been taken. The delegation decided to add a new section to the selection's rulebook, and they assured that they will no longer accept foreign act submissions for the selection. This means that all participants must have some kind of relation to Spain - let it be via parents, place of residence, or being native. They hoped that submissions will increase and we'll get to see more interesting acts competing for the spots in the final. And luckily enough, the delegation received about 1.2k more submissions than last edition's españax!
The acts have in fact been chosen already, and the head of delegation, Alejandro Sánchez, revealed some exclusive information to the blog espanaparanvsc.es. The selection committee opted for a more diverse edition this time, so they went on to call for native talent from all ends of Spain. After a careful examination of all the submissions, the list has been narrowed to 20 native acts. For the second edition of the selection, artists from Galicia, Basque Country, Palma de Mallorca, Andalusia, Catalonia and many more will be featured. And, as twenty acts will be in the running, instead of one big final, two semi-finals of ten will be held and will be later on narrowed down to ten acts for the grand final.
