North Vision Song Contest
Minor changes in songs approval

Stockholm, Sweden • 23rd August 2018

Following complaints by several Heads of Delegations, the NBU called an urgent meeting. The meeting resulted into further (minor) rule changes that will be applied into the competition for the 26th edition.

Borrowing countries gain "independence"

Due to the more strict deadlines set by the NBU, the micro-states were put in a difficult position when it comes to approving their entries.
Therefore, the council has decided that the micro-states will no longer need approvals from the countries they are borrowing from. The affected countries are the following:

Andorra borrowing from Spain
Faroe Islands borrowing from Denmark
Liechtenstein borrowing from Austria or Switzerland
Luxembourg borrowing from Belgium
Monaco borrowing from France
San Marino borrowing from Italy

This means that the "first come, first serve" rule will be applied for the involved countries. Nevertheless, the council will be strict on approvals for the micro-states regarding the originality of their songs.

The new rule is already in effect for the approvals of the 26th edition.

North Vision Song Contest
Changes regarding the Pre-Qualification Round

Geneva, Switzerland • 3rd September 2018

It has been noticed that in the previous Pre-Qualification Rounds (PQRs), the votes of the participating countries have been really different compared to the votes of the Rest of the World (RotW). As a result, rule changes regarding the PQR will be introduced in the 26th edition.

Change of the voting system

Taking inspiration from the highly successful Fantasifestivalen,
the total value of votes will be 2 x 58 x number of PQR participants, which means that the PQR participants and the RotW voters will have an equal 50/50 weighing in the final result. The points given will remain the same (1 to 7, 8, 10 and 12 points).
The points of the RotW voters will be given to each country based on its percentage of total vote.
If we use the #26 PQR as an example, the total value of votes will be 2 x 522 (58 x 9). 
If a country gets 10% of the total RotW votes, it will be equivalent to 10% of 522 points, which is equal to 52 points.

As a result of the new system being more complicated, the PQR host will now have to co-operate with the NBU in order to ensure that everything is done correctly and that the final results will be valid.

Announcements regarding the 27th edition

Vienna, Austria • 8th September 2018

As the grand final of the twenty-sixth edition currently
wraps up in its voting procedure, the North Broadcasting
Union has thrilling news to uncover for the upcoming
edition already, setting the change for 2019.

The Moldovan question

Voluntarily, the designated player for Moldova (✨💃) has decided
to leave the contest before his first edition with the country. As the
country was won through a fair draw, both the rejected waiting list
player and the active player that voluntarily participated in the
draw were asked to deal with the circumstances internally.

We are happy to announce that ~Rethnas~ will take on
the role as the HoD of Moldova from the twenty-seventh edition onwards
with his former Co-HoD (inactive) now formally as the acting Head of
Delegation for Lithuania.

We ask YOU to shape the future!

For more than five years, our contest has stood against all odds to
entertain, excite and aspire everyone. To ensure our future, we now
ask you, loyal players and fans, to take part in a non-binding form
to evaluate our work for the past year, noticeably including the past
three editions hosted in Vienna, Casablanca and Rotterdam.

North Vision Song Contest
Changes regarding the semi-finals and the tie-breaker rules

Podgorica, Montenegro • 1st December 2018

With the 26th edition successfully coming to an end, the NBU held a meeting in Podgorica, Montenegro, where the following rule changes were decided.

Changes on the semi-finals' sequence

From #27 on, both semi-finals will be held in the same week. While no problems were recorded with the previous system, reasons such as time efficiency and the success of the new system in other contests in the forums, predominantly in the Fantasia Contest, have urged the council to this decision.
As a result, all twenty qualifiers will be announced in random order in one results video.


Changes on the tie-breaker rules

After popular demand, it has also been decided that from #27 on, ties will not be broken based on which country got the most points from the televoting, but based on which country got points from the biggest amount of countries, regardless whether it was jury points or televoting points. This change was decided as we consider it fairer and as it doesn't make jury points less relevant than the televoting points in any way.

Announcing changes in our system

Graz, Austria • 17th January 2019

With the semi-finals being presented in less than two weeks, the North Broadcasting Union has started implementing new rules that count for the majority of the new year and have been enacted for the 28th edition and following.

TUNISIA WILL RETURN!

The council is glad to announce that Tunisia will be allowed to return with the twenty-eighth edition after the public have expressed their wish for the country to participate again in the contest.

Tunisia debuted in the eight edition alongside Algeria, this being their first and so far only edition to qualify to the grand final. Ever since until the sixteenth edition, they failed to do so, hence withdrawing due to lack of interest both internationally as well as from the Tunisian public and broadcaster. However, since the Tunisian band Myrath placed sixth in the twenty-third edition and gave Morocco its second pre-qualification, interest sparked again.

In return, Liechtenstein will not be in the North Vision Song Contest until further notice, marking the twenty-sixth edition its last participation. The country has seen its fair deal of controversies recently, seen as a "bypass" country by many and relying on its neighbours to send entries. In contrast to other countries, it is unable to sustain itself equally and hinders more diverse nations to participate in the contest. The same can be said for most micro-nations, which may be exchanged as well upon future changes in delegations.

More countries may be allowed to return and debut if the council sees the need to replace a country that can not sustain itself musically.

APPROVAL SYSTEM

Due to increased bureaucracy and subsequently disappointing the playerbase, the NBU has decided to put a limit on the approval messages sent to the council. Whereas previously you were given no direct instructions on how approvals work out, we will have an intensified look at them now.

You are allowed to send a maximum of two messages for each edition that demand our approvals. Just like in the Fantasia Contest, we won't respond for any further messages unless there has been an unforeseen change of events. If you are uncertain of the songs you want to send for approval, don't send us whole packages of "maybe's" or even multiple messages in delayed response for your selections.

We acknowledge that your national selections are paced similarly, but it just creates an odd lot of work for us - this has slowed down our responses over the years, and it must be put to an halt once and for all.

Also, we hope you take this time to have a deeper look whether your entries are eligible: covers and similar, everything that makes an entry ineligible.

This segment has no specific title, but is important regardless, albeit just a footnote. We want to thank everyone who contributes to this contest and consults the council with ideas that we are grateful for, as well as constructive critique. But due to the recent changes in the forums and the shift of attitudes in the past months, we must state that it is the council's role to host the contest, not yours. We exchange a lot of our free time to give you an unbelievable experience (and so we aspire), just to be faced with ridiculous shenanigans at some ends. Vile words and harassments on council members won't be tolerated and may result in sanctions, both in the contest and the forums.

Inactive council members mustn't be taken account and ridiculed. If you have a matter that requires their say, it is a matter that can wait a bit longer.

Changes in the NBU council

Odessa, Ukraine • 3 February 2019

Despite the competition being halfway through its 27th edition, currently taking place in Odessa, Ukraine, the NBU held a press conference right after the semi-final results in order to announce the changes made within the council.

WHAT CHANGES IN THE COUNCIL?

Since its formal introduction all the way back in the 4th edition of the contest, the council has seen multiple members joining it, either as permanent or temporary members. During the past year, the majority of its original core members sadly left their positions. This continues with the departure of another one of its original members: Daniel has recently announced his wish to depart from, among other forum duties, the NBU council in order to concentrate more on his own competition. With this opportunity, the council would like to thank Daniel for all the hard work he's put into the competition during all the years of his contribution, making the contest even more remarkable and astonishing.

However, the void left by Daniel's departure won't be left unfilled. The council is glad to announce that Alper will be joining the council as a permanent member starting from this edition. The council agreed on the inclusion of Alper given the interest he has shown into helping the competition grow even more.

Apart from this announcement, the council would like to take this opportunity to thank every single member who contributes and helps with the competition, no matter the significance of the contribution. In the meantime, we're willing to expand further to the broad masses in due time, stay intertwined for more additions in form of applications in the current year.

Announcements regarding the anniversary edition

With the 29th edition being over, the preparations for the 30th edition which will be held in Sweden are already underway. After a meeting that finished just now, the NBU is ready to reveal two new informations regarding the 30th anniversary edition.

THE ASSOCIATES FINAL IS BACK!

Yes, you've heard it right!
The NBU has just announced that for the 30th anniversary edition of the North Vision Song Contest, the associate broadcasters and their respective countries will be invited to take part in the biggest online song contest.

The NBU stated that a new broadcaster will be invited to take part in the contest due to multiple reasons such as promoting cultural diversity, and for celebrating the 30th edition of the contest.
The system will just work like the 20th edition. 

The NBU will allow one Associate Member participate in the contest,
via a so-called "Associate Final" held among all of the foreign broadcasters who wish to take part in the competition.

Voting will be made in the generic style, with 1-8, 10 and 12 points being given out to the competing countries. Regular NVSC participants are allowed to vote, but all their ranks will make up the "European Jury", as one additional vote.

All the associate members who wish to do so must submit their entry to the NBU Council and wait for approval just like any other participating country. The deadline will be announced soon, but you can already start submitting your songs!

One side note, you are only allowed to claim associate countries between 00:00CET Monday 14th October and 23:59CET Saturday 19th October. The taglist has been cleared of inactive associate broadcasters so any country that is not on the taglist is free to take, and you can do so by PMing alexeh. Countries will be given out on a first come first served basis so get going quickly!

LOOKING FOR NEW COUNCIL MEMBERS!

The NBU has revealed that they're looking for not 1, but 2 new council members! 

We're looking for someone who:

• is able to use most of the required programs (PowerPoint, Sony Vegas, Camtasia,Photoshop, Gimp etc.)
• is able to make recaps and/or results
• is able to play a supporting role in anything else

North Vision Song Contest
New council members announced!

Tunis, Tunisia • 1st November 2019

As a spokesperson for the NBU, I am delighted to finally announce the two new council members ahead of the pearl edition of the North Vision Song Contest, set to be held in Sweden. 

We received a surprisingly high number strong and convincing applications and for that reason it was difficult to reach a decision, but one has now been made. Ultimately we chose two people who we believe can make their own unique and impactful contributions to the contest.

A huge thank you to everyone who applied, as previously mentioned there was a high number of competitive applications so do not be discouraged if you didn't make it this time as we will definitely run applications again should we ever need help again.

North Vision Song Contest
Announcing changes to the contest

Copenhagen, Denmark • 21st January 2020

Ahead of the first contest of the new decade - both in real time and in North Vision - the NBU held a press conference in Copenhagen to make several important announcements regarding changes set to take place in the contest.

GOOD MORNING AUSTRALIA!

The council is delighted to announce that Australia will be allowed to continue its participation for the thirty-first edition, following their debut after winning the associates' final last edition. The public as well as broadcaster SBS expressed keen interest in the country's permanent participation in the contest, and we are extremely excited to see what they have to offer.

In return, Egypt will not be in the North Vision Song Contest until further notice, making the 30th edition its last participation. This comes following discussions with both the NBU council and the current Egyptian head of delegation, Callum , who will instead take over the vacant position as Tunisian head of delegation.

As a result, ahead of the 31st edition, two draws will be taking place - the draw for Belgium, which the first place in the waiting list (Wysteria ) will be able to apply for, as well as all other eligible current participants, and the draw for Australia, which the second place in the waiting list (Shaun ) and the current Australian HoD (Alper ) will be able to apply for, as well as all other eligible current participants. In the event that a current participant wins the Australian draw, their country will first be offered to Shaun .

More countries may be allowed to return and debut if the council sees the need to replace a country that can not sustain itself musically.

THE UPCOMING EDITION

As a shorter update, we want to inform you that preparations for the thirty-first edition in Norway are well underway, and updates and information can be expected in the near future.

North Vision Song Contest
Council meet-up in Athens

Athens, Greece • 17th February 2020

An important meeting was held today at one of the NBU Basements in Greece to discuss several matters, including matters related to the upcoming 31st edition.

NEW RULEBOOK PUBLISHED

A new rulebook has just been published by the NBU Council. The Council decided that it was time for this vital change of the old rulebook that was published several editions ago. The new rulebook was written by all the members of the Council and was under review the past weeks. It includes the majority of the rules that were part of the old rulebook with – small or big – changes to it, as well as several new rules.

Among other changes, a major change within the rules is the warning system (as used similarly in Fantasia Contest). The old strike system has been converted to warnings. The people who had already been removed from the competition after their 3rd strike did not have their punishments changed.

You can find the new rulebook here.

The new rulebook includes a changelog that will enlist the changes made to the rulebook since it was published. In case you need clarification over any of the sections or rules of the rulebook, you may contact one of the council members.

GOODNIGHT AUSTRIA

On another note, the NBU Council is sad to announce the departure of yet another of its core members. Sinny will sadly be leaving the council ahead of the 31st edition of the contest, after they cited several reasons for their decision to leave, including their desire to shift their focus elsewhere. Nevertheless, we would like to thank Sinny for their valuable contributions to the contest since the 24th edition. We are eternally grateful, and we wish you the best. However, Sinny will still take part in the competition with their current country, Austria.

For the time being, it has not been revealed whether the spot left from the departure of Sinny will be filled with someone else, but the NBU Council is open to it. Stay tuned for more updates!
